Dated? Or still acceptable to wear?!

Why does MM allow words to be crossed through?
They are still there for the poster to read.

Meghan Markle? Mickey Mouse? Maison Margiela? MaxMara?

It's strikethrough. It's useful for things that you don't quite want to delete.

Floisme · 10/04/2026 13:48

I like a lot of florals. I think there's something quintessentially British about them. I don't see them as something we need to apologise to Italy for. I just didn't like the floral dresses that were in fashion / on trend (because I can't be arsed unpicking the difference right now) 5 or 6 years ago.

DespairMode · 10/04/2026 11:01

What's the difference between the British women in the "uniform" of flowery dresses and trainers, and the Italian women in a uniform of beautiful cotton dresses and simple leather sandals?

One is chic the other is frumpsville unless you’re under 25.

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/04/2026 13:59

Do I need to go buy some shifts? No. Shift dresses are not an easy style to look good in. They tend to suit the 'boyish' figure only.

There's nothing wrong with some floral dresses.

StylishAndBeautiful · 09/04/2026 20:58

Style what you like to make it look current.

I don't care if it's 'current'. Why should I?

Oh crap, I am going to Italy and have a few flowery dresses. They are really nice though 😁

Do I need to go buy some shifts?

Actually perhaps I should just go shopping there. One of my stop offs is Lucca.

That said, I was in Rome last year and in a shop. I heard the assistants go up to quite a few tourists and speak to them in English as the universal language. Then 2 came up to me and spoke to me in Italian, so perhaps I will be OK.

Edited

There are some beautiful shops in Lucca! I could have bought loads more if my bags weren't already jam packed!

I was in Rome last winter too & also bought some really nice things including a bag i adore.

I love a little bit of shopping when i'm away especially for things that are harder to find at home

I am sure you will look fabulous & hope you have a wonderful Italian holiday (with shopping!)

Kate Middleton or if you prefer, the Princess of Wales for one. I'd need a ladder to get into some of her stilettoes! Is that dated or decreed by Royal protocol? I hate heels of any sort. To me they are a symbol of female oppression and a prop for drag artists😊Never see men wearing them (unless they are dressing up as women of course).

I give you the one and only Prince, sex on legs (in high heels!)

I sense you haven't actually explained why?

Nenya · 10/04/2026 07:26

I'm seeing quite a few folk in our offices (London, Edinburgh, Manchester) wearing heels again - often what I think of as quite retro styles, with a blocky or kitten heel rather than a 4 inch stiletto, and/or the high vamp that doesn't show much toe cleavage. So I suspect the trend cycle is moving again.

I had to go to a dressy event recently and I’ve not had the occasion to wear heels for a long time, I felt fabulous! I’m tall anyway so I towered over a lot of the men, made me feels very statuesque! It made such a change from always wearing trainers though they can’t be beaten for comfort I’m frankly bored to the back teeth of them.

I love heels and miss them too 🥲

I don't like heels and I've managed to happily avoid wearing them (along with trainers) for most of my life. But I did find it odd how sanctimonious some people became about them after they'd fallen out of fashion. I've noticed too that, while the word 'dated' never fails to raise hackles, it appears to be perfectly acceptable to use it about heels.

Anyway yes, I'm sure they'll come back into fashion although I still won't be wearing them myself. (Except for platforms which are fabulous.)

Madarch · 10/04/2026 14:46

Anyone who looks at you and actually thinks "ew, those clothes look dated" isn't worth listening to. Wear whatever makes you feel good!

Fashion is just another capitalist strategy to make you chuck out perfectly good clothes to buy different clothes only to chuck them out again the following year.

They won't tell you.
Having said that I have some blunt friends and relatives who will tell me, and they are worth listening to.

worldshottestmom · 10/04/2026 15:22

I love a dress and white trainers 😍 who cares what other people think tbh, if you like it and you think you look good then others most likely will as well (from my experience)

@Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink I would probably wear the dress and denim jacket because I wore them before it was fashionable.

The 'french tuck' to me looks like 'I'm trying to hide a thick waistline'.

I do this and it’s true I am.

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/04/2026 16:02

I'm convinced that there's a whole lot of MNers wandering around in floral midi Patra dresses and Hotter sandals from the back of You magazine topped with a nice little cropped denim jacket from M&S circa 2016, with a beige crossbody Radley bag to match the sandals. Smile

DespairMode · 10/04/2026 17:09

Did writing all that make you feel good about yourself?

It looks to me like 'I went to the loo in a hurry.'

ChocolateCinderToffee · 10/04/2026 17:13

I find it funny that people talk about 'dated' and 'frumpy' when a couple of years back 'buffet' dresses were the height of fashion, particularly in swirly brown flowery print. Reminded me of the worst of the 70s (which I remember well) and I can't think of anything more dowdy than a brown floral dress with Laura Ashley tiers.

RampantIvy · 10/04/2026 17:31

Isn't this style and beauty, not fashion and beauty?

Oh, and I don't wear Damart, or Hotter or beige.

Surely style encompasses fashion, they are not mutually exclusive.

StylishAndBeautiful · 10/04/2026 17:40

I don't think there is anything wrong with Hotter, Radley or Damart BTW, they're fine just probably not the first brands someone might think of when considering updating their wardrobe.

Some of my 'stone' or 'natural' garments might be beige.
