S&B “cliches/classics/staples” that work and don’t for for you…

For me:

Don’t work: oversize white shirt, bold lip, giant sunglasses.

Do work: trench (black) and wrap coat, good watch.

I’ve never seen the love for Sezanne, Me + Em, Toast or a few of the other labels mentioned here. Maybe I’m just being an ostrich.

Boob or bust is awful, people wear bras that hurt them due to it. It’s utterly bizzare. I saw a post from someone who actually wrote if it doesn’t give you a big red welt where the band is, it doesn’t fit. How did anyone get to adult woman and think that.

Can only conclude that’s masochism! I bought a strapless bra in JL after being properly measured - it took about 3 days for the red welt to go down after wearing it for a party. In the bin…..

DownTurpinRoad · 15/03/2026 12:37

Another one who has never found a white shirt or a trench coat that look good on me.

‘Elegant gold jewellery’ e.g. small gold hoops, elegant gold bracelet/watch etc - I feel like my mother/grandmother

MargotLovesTom · 15/03/2026 12:49

Don't throw away new bras which are too tight in the band - just buy some bra extenders!

I can't get away with tailored trousers. I have no waist, and to get them big enough to fasten at the waist means the rest is too baggy and look like clown pants.

I do think a lot of women wear the wrong size, and boob or bust made it worse, I see lots of comments about women being uncomfortable in bras and wanting to take them off as soon as they get home, bras should fit comfortably, you should be able to get two fingers under the band, they shouldn’t dig in or leave welts. And you get bras that give more comfort ie soft cups etc, but less shape.

Papyrophile · 15/03/2026 13:01

I'm glad someone else shares my loathing of puffed sleeves and agrees that Me&Em do them much too often.

Leather, I just look like the kind of cut price dominatrix who’d hang out in a seedy bit of soho dragging on a fag round the back of the shop till some unfortunate came I’d beat them in a desultory manner with the trains of the fag trembling on my lips with one eye on an old episode of columbo playing in the corner.

also crisp white shirts, transforms me less into gwyneth Paltrow and more building society counter assistant circa 1980…

You need to write you are hilarious!

I also saw the title and leapt in to talk about crisp white shirts! Also shirts in that ubiquitous shade of light blue.

I can get most other classics to work for me.

A Mumsnet classic I wouldn't be seen dead in is a jumpsuit. Partly because I'm too long, and partly because they make everyone's bums look flat and wide.

I have a lucy&yak one ,jumpsuit

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 15/03/2026 11:35

I look like im off for a mid level public service job. Even with jeans and a "it was crisp five minutes ago" white shirt. My mate lives in them and looks great. I look like Doreen from Auditing. (Sorry auditors)

😁 on the rare occasions when I put on a blazer, I'm instantly transported back to being 16 and trying to buy booze underage .... complete with nylon blouse, nude-ish satin lipstick and shiny mid heel pumps ...

cubistqueen · 15/03/2026 14:10

PuppyMonkey · 15/03/2026 08:55

I think they make everyone look pretty silly but the “French tuck” makes me look particularly ridiculous. Grin

It actually makes me look thinner 😂. I have big boobs so untucked I look like a box and tucked in is far too much fabric around my fat stomach and arse, so half in amd half out or a bit tucked in the front covers u the arse and doesn’t show off the stomach so much.

AccordingToWhom · 15/03/2026 14:12

Barrel legged jeans and those weird sack-like garments sold by Toast and Cos - even the models look dreadful in them.

BlanklyMyDear · 15/03/2026 14:39

Waisted dresses. Typically from Nobody’s Child. I didn’t know the term ‘fit and flare’ until I came to MN (nearly two decades ago). It’s the opposite of the way I dress and I feel an almost visceral dislike (cannot articulate why) for all that niceness.

Kingsleadhat · 15/03/2026 14:40

Tonissister · 15/03/2026 10:13

Cos. Horrible boxy cut stuff fabrics that have nothing in sympathy with the natural female form.

Ballet pumps are just soggy, plantar-fasciitis-inducing, cankle amplifiers. Evil.

Im so glad you've said that about Cos. I really, really don't get it. Everything looks like rectangles stitched together

Oh my god yes to this. Why was boob or bust such an evangelical thing? It’s downright painful and unnecessary. Tried it as had a friend who was adamant it was better. My god. No. Went straight back on the Sainsbury’s lace bralets haha.

Nicecatneighbour · 15/03/2026 09:53

Oh me too. I'm curvy but short waisted with big boobs. Anything boxy, I look like an actual box. 📦

I do suit a blazer, though. As long as it's tailored.

Edited

Yes, a blazer is good for me too, particularly long-line.

Clogblog · 15/03/2026 16:36

I love a blazer and have loads that I wear all the time.

I can't stand beige/taupe/camel/brown colours and they look awful on me. I actually generally think they don't look great.

I also really don't get & other stories and me and Em. Most things there just look really weird to me .

For example - why would anyone pay £250 to look like they have draped themselves in old net curtain? https://www.meandem.com/silk-dotted-poppy-print-blouse-with-cami-tie-light-cream-multi

Not sure about that. I think it can make some pear shaped people look more hourglass. Not me because I already have broad shoulders and I think they make me look like a man, but they can help some women.

Yes that’s true, I have wide shoulders too

NeartoNewquay · 15/03/2026 18:19

I rarely wear anything suggested on S&B and can't imagine wearing a blazer and have a pathological hatred for crisp shirts - or any shirts actually. My theory is that in the UK we are hugely traumatised by our school uniforms aka blazer and shirt combo - something which our continental cousins, including the oh so perfect French, cannot begin to understand 😀

Gettingbysomehow · 15/03/2026 18:38

Linen....why? It looks like a creased old rag after 5 seconds. Look everyone I slept in my clothes.
Usually worn by women in their 50s and 60s (Im 64) usually with a stupid floppy hat.
Hideous in every way.

StillSpartacus · 15/03/2026 18:46

I’m very glad to find I’m not alone in my dislike of camel, which makes me look dowdy rather than designer. And yes to binning stupid puff sleeves, fussy necklines and let’s look 7 months pregnant empire line dresses.

But mostly the mystery of me and em. It’s Sosander but with weirder shapes and a 0 on the end of the pricetag.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 15/03/2026 19:16

My best friend once bought me a lovely bag in mustard and I had to be totally honest and say did she have the receipt so I could exchange it. Luckily she did have. I apparently suit and have brown clothes but actually prefer black.

You’ve nailed it re Me and Em.

mdinbc · 15/03/2026 19:20

I think the majority have agreed white button up shirts and ballerina flats are hard to pull off!

I just bought a denim button-up, which is always on the list for a classic wardrobe, and honestly I think it makes me look a bit butch. Definitely needs lipstick and earrings...

henlake7 · 15/03/2026 19:20

Tooty78 · 15/03/2026 09:35

Trench coats, can't get past the Inspector Clouseau/ Gadget vibe with them.

Agreed.
I also can't do a crisp white shirt, just washes me out although I will do a white graphic tee.
And red lipstick. It makes me feel like I'm in drag!
Anything showing my ankles or calves. I have hideous varicose veins and ankles made of play dough so ballet flats or shorts in summer are not it.

Although this thread makes me realise I probably have some epic self denial going. I bought a camel/tan blazer and barrel trousers today and I'm convinced I totally rock them!😂

Ipollita · 15/03/2026 19:45

I have to confess I don’t like the majority of the suggestions trotted out on S&B but particularly the very large, shapeless dresses that seem to be incredibly popular on Mumsnet. Sort of Homer Simpson wearing a moo moo vibe.

I’m another one who can’t do camel, particularly camel coats. I feel like I’m a pinky ring and a gun away from being possessed by the ghost of John Gotti.

I do love big sunnies and dainty gold jewellery.
