S&B “cliches/classics/staples” that work and don’t for for you…

For me:

Don’t work: oversize white shirt, bold lip, giant sunglasses.

Do work: trench (black) and wrap coat, good watch.

OP posts:

The ubiquitous recommendation for a day out in that London: Floral midi, denim jacket and trainers. Yukkety-yuk (mostly to the floral midi.)

LysistrataSusanCarter · 15/03/2026 08:43

I’m not sure camel looks great on many people, to be honest. I can’t understand why it’s recommended as a classic suit-all shade on here. It looks great on my Nigerian friend though.

BlueRidgeMountain · 15/03/2026 08:44

High waisted anything. I’m short and still have a c-section shelf. High waists don’t pull it all in and smooth it out (like the S&B experts claim.) I just look like a potato cut in half in the middle. Actually, I look like I don’t have a body either, due to being short. Just boobs and a head on legs.
I’ve seen style advisors suggest empire line to hide the stomach/shelf, but that makes me look like a lampshade.
weirdly I do suit a crisp white shirt….. if only I could manage not not stain it!

Lips.
Plural.

Why, why, why has this become the way to describe lipstick use?

Not just you of course OP.

I think they make everyone look pretty silly but the “French tuck” makes me look particularly ridiculous. Grin

PandaKitty · 15/03/2026 09:14

Anything with shoulder pads

I cannot wear camel. I look like a camel if I do. Also beige, taupe, caramel, greige or tasteful neutrals from the brown family.

I'm the same I look washed out and hideous

Rabbithill · 15/03/2026 09:20

Anything oversized - or anything that ends on hip level, as I am short and wide-hipped. Jumpsuits make me look like a fat toddler thanks to my short legs and round tummy.

Gardenquestion22 · 15/03/2026 09:21

Camel looks good on rich women who lunch with a slight tan from a Caribbean winter break and posh expensive dyed hair.

trosers that show ankle, I look like I’ve outgrown my trousers and my mum isn’t going to replace them till the new term.

GameOfJones · 15/03/2026 09:23

Things that don't work for me: white anything.....shirt, t shirt, white jeans are all a hard no.

Camel trenchcoat.

Wool. It is always so bloody itchy!

Does work for me: big sunglasses, chunky footwear, blazers, wide leg trousers, french tuck

Tiddlywinkly · 15/03/2026 09:26

Blazers, white shirts (washes me out) and beige trenches (but navy looks great on me).

Ballet pumps are the most uncomfortable shoes known to me man.

Ballet pumps are awful, it’s inviting plantar fasciitis into your life….

Wildgoat · 15/03/2026 09:30

I suit camel, it’s a really good colour on me, I’m pale skinned brunette, it always looks expensive too if dressed right,

I also can’t do white shirts, white anything close to my face, it doesn’t work with my skin tone, I don’t like cropped trousers and I don’t like trench coats either, I seldom have seen anyone look good in one.

I also don’t wear cullottes as dislike them, and no to skinny jeans but I don’t consider them classic, just outdated,

I also can’t do red lipstick and agree with the pp who said stop calling it lip singular, it sounds pretentious , like you’re trying to prefend you’re the beauty editor of vogue 😂 just say lipstick or lips.

dudsville · 15/03/2026 09:33

For me it's the recommendation for Lanx, Blundstone, Grensons, Solovair, etc. They're routinely named on S&B as the better choice instead of DMs, for so many valid reasons, quality craftsmanship, made in Britain, etc., but Virginia DMs are so much more affordable and comfortable straight out of the box!

Gettingbysomehow · 15/03/2026 09:34

Red lipstick looks absolutely absurd on me.
Shirts a big no no as are jumpsuits.
Big baggy clothes and trousers do nothing for me.
Skinny jeans look horrible on me as Im pear shaped even though Im only size 10.
I suit fitted dresses as I have a small waist and modest bust 34 D.
Blazers look really good too but I only wear casual ones in denim or likewise that I can wear over jeans and I dont like oversized anything they just swamp me.
Straight leg or bootcut trousers are better on me.
I can only wear wide leg trousers with a fitted slimline top.

Tooty78 · 15/03/2026 09:35

Trench coats, can't get past the Inspector Clouseau/ Gadget vibe with them.

MayaPinion · 15/03/2026 09:40

Skinny jeans - especially skinny jeans with high heels. I look like a short arse flamingo.

Yeah that’s what I see too.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/03/2026 09:50

Any of the “classic, capsule wardrobe” type things here - white shirt (I don’t own a single shirt or blouse), blazer, trench, pencil skirt. I really like the idea of a trench coat but live in Scotland and walk everywhere, and imagine it’s the kind of garment I would have one day a year of the weather to wear.

I’m a die-hard red lipstick person though.

Anything boxy

Oh me too. I'm curvy but short waisted with big boobs. Anything boxy, I look like an actual box. 📦

I do suit a blazer, though. As long as it's tailored.

I have a navy trench coat with a detachable hood which I was thrilled to find, only to be told by my dd's 10 year old friend I looked like a reporter from a Batman film.

TheOGCCL · 15/03/2026 10:00

Yes neither crisp nor white works for me. A shirt that is crisp would need to be a perfect fit and I’m not finding that on the UK high street. Shirts seem to pull all ways on me, I can really only wear them open in summer.

Also

M&S jeans. So popular but just cannot get on with them, mainly as they all seem really high rise even when labelled otherwise.

DMs or any kind of clompy boot. I don’t want anything heavy on my feet.

The Whistles blazer, maybe a classic but too neat and twee for my liking. I do have an oversized blazer from old Topshop that I wear as an outer jacket in spring.

😆 TBF they probably meant it as a compliment

SomethingFun · 15/03/2026 10:10

I haven’t worn a crisp white shirt since high school 😁 None of the capsule wardrobe stuff appeals to me at all, it suits neat women who like ironing and I’m curvy and a bit scruffy. I like bright colours, soft fabrics and dresses. I have quite large lips and small eyes so I’ve never done the ‘statement lip’ with no eye makeup as I think I’d look like a ghost wearing a comedy gob.

NotAWurstToIt · 15/03/2026 10:13

I love red lipstick, but also struggle with a crisp white shirt, because on me it doesn’t look crisp and I’m too messy for it to stay white for long!
Pastels for me - I look washed out and I just don’t like them. Also anything with linen in looks like a scrunched up tea towel in minutes if I wear it. I also don’t do ironing, so it would get worn once then never again!
