Do you think this would work for an April wedding?
Most of my dresses are either work type, winter (lots of grey and black) or very summery and would need me to buy some kind of jacket
I don’t normally wear jackets - I’m a coat and cardigan person
I’m 61 5’4” size 16

Thanks @EleanorMc67 - I will wait till it arrives and have a look at jackets - I quite like the H and M one

I think something fairly plain and understated is nice. Not the classic Phase 8 vibe. A colour you know suits you and a good cut.Something comfortable and stylish on your feet.

It might sound horribly fuddy duddy but I bought a decent dress with a pattern ( blue) and had a rose gold wrap. The wrap was handy if I felt chilly.

Somehow it all worked well.

It looks too short and casual for a wedding. Something fitted and knee length or longer would be more appropriate with a smart cardi or jacket if its cold. This is what my Mum wore to my April wedding.

It's really nice, isn't it? I wear my kimono-style jackets with jeans or long dresses, but I think it could work over a knee-length dress?

One thing is, don't assume you'll need a large. It says regular fit, & there are no reviews yet, but kimono cuts are often oversized. I have a medium from a similar thing from H&M - & I'm definitely not a medium these days!

Edited

The OP isn't keen on the cut of standard coats & jackets as the seam at the shoulder makes her look boxy, she thinks. So I was trying to find alternatives. It's hard to find dropped shoulder seams!!!

Do you think the whole coat/ jacket thing is a bit dated maybe? It depends of the wedding, how formal , what part OP has in it, venue and so on. I think most people are going for a sort of smart, casual vibe. Maybe?

Personally, it's not my look. But if you read the thread, my own understanding is:

  • The OP likes shift/sheath dresses for her shape, & it's her preference to wear one.
  • She is happy with her own style & doesn't want to wear something just because it's current/fashionable.
  • She likes colour & pattern & florals.
  • She has been on a huge weight-loss journey, & intends to continue.
  • She doesn't want to spend much money on an outfit when she intends to keep going from her current size 16 to size 10/12.
  • She would therefore prefer to buy stuff on eBay/Vinted.
  • She prefers dropped shoulders on jackets/coats as she feels less blocky in them.

I've been trying to suggest things that fit the bill for the OP, not what is my own personal taste.

You've been incredibly helpful @EleanorMc67 and managed to consider what the OP actually wants, rather than try to shoehorn her into something which isn't her and ultimately, she wouldn't feel comfortable in.

bafta16 · 19/03/2026 15:38

@EleanorMc67 You have invested a lot of time into this. I was just saying, at a similar age, what worked for me.

Anyhow, Good Luck OP.

Could you hire a dress?
