Do you think this would work for an April wedding?
Most of my dresses are either work type, winter (lots of grey and black) or very summery and would need me to buy some kind of jacket
I don’t normally wear jackets - I’m a coat and cardigan person
I’m 61 5’4” size 16

A wrap dress is always difficult to put a jacket over. The wrap is in the wrong place - the split. It’s much easier to put a jacket over a standard dress and a kimono jacket is brilliant over a straight dress or palazzo pants. It’s stylish. Lots of jackets are cinched at the waist this year and that can look really good,

OhDear111 · 16/03/2026 18:48

These jackets are from The Royal Opera House and Toast and the coat is Plumo. It’s over sized and would be better cinched in. However all work with a plain dress and good accessories make them suitable for a wedding.

Jesus - when did S&B get so bitchy.
God forbid anyone come here for supportive, helpful advice.

PabloEscoBear · 16/03/2026 20:43

@JaceLancs I’m short so I sympathise
I’ve actually found some great finds on Vinted for weddings because I don’t want to spend lots on outfits I probably won’t wear again. Including short jacket type things (not cropped) that sit well on me given my height.

M&S petite range might be worth a look. I’ve ordered trousers from there that are a good fit.

JaceLancs · 16/03/2026 20:52

M and S jacket thing - sadly out of stock in my size but could go with the cream floral dress

I know, this thread is just awful. Poor OP

PabloEscoBear · 16/03/2026 21:23

@JaceLancs A kimono jacket will not look weird
I’ve had a few of those in the past too! Similar to the brown one @OhDear111 posted

again - you could probably find some on Vinted

@PabloEscoBear The one with the taupe slip dress is a wool mix kimono jacket from the Royal Opera House. It can easily be enhanced for a wedding. It’s not too expensive either. Japan is a source of wonderful clothes.

OneNewEagle · 16/03/2026 21:42

Hi OP do you know what if the wedding was a bit more alternative I’d wear the first one, not sure about length but that with coloured tights and a pair of boots.

As everyone else has said a resounding no without even asking what sort of wedding you are attending or the dress code though ignore me. I think out of your other outfits the grey one may be best. As it’s going to be April I would wear a coat over it rather than a jacket, wedding style jackets or boleros are so hard to match with dresses.

I used to have a long patterned floral coat, grey and black, with fancy buttons. Not a practical coat at all but would be perfect for this sort of thing and would keep me warm.

I would take a photo to show you what I mean but sadly when I moved house a few years ago it was one of the items that got ruined. I’ve got a feeling I have seen one very similar to it in a Roman store years ago so it’s possible there’s something like it on vinted. I used to have that one and a long black one with just a tie at the front and fake fur , I used to always call them my opera coats incase I was ever to go somewhere fancy.

enjoy the wedding.

Here is the first dress on a 5'4" size 16. It looks much better on a person than on the hanger. I prefer it over the others. I think it would be fine, depending on what the material is.

OhDear111 · 16/03/2026 23:19

It’s still awful for a wedding.

AnSpideog · 16/03/2026 23:45

No. It’s a definite no. I suspect the colour is good on the OP. It is just not a fashionable dress.

JaceLancs · 17/03/2026 00:20

@PhaedraWas that’s very clever!
My legs are much skinnier than that though and the dress does not look as A line on me
I think I’m going to end up wearing the cream floral phase eight dress in the end just trying to find a suitable cream jacket now - considering this one on eBay

I prefer the original dress. I'm changing my mind about its suitability for a wedding. I don't like traditional Phase Eight / Hobbs occasion dresses and that dress would catch my eye, in a good way, better than them.

JaceLancs · 17/03/2026 00:53

Thank you @PhaedraWas - the last time I wore it was with opaques in a browny maroon colour with brown boots and got loads of compliments - I would not have considered it for a wedding if others hadn’t suggested it
Not sure it makes any difference but I’m a plus one not main guest!
The last wedding I went to I was MOB and went for a very different more traditional look

I would wear browny maroony pointy toed ankle boots, preferably suede, failing that black pointy toe kitten heeled ankle boots, leather, suede or patentvand sheer black or barely black tights or dark tights.

minnowonthesay · 17/03/2026 07:36

I really like the dress and think if you picked out the pale blue too for either earrings, bracelet or a giant wrap it would look great, especially with tights and kitten heeled ankle boots, very arty and individual. I love that we’re all different, be a boring old world if we all went to weddings in a uniform, well we’d be like men in their navy suits 😂

That's lovely op x

OhDear111 · 17/03/2026 09:26

@JaceLancs Try snd pick out a colour in the floral design for the jacket. Cream is too light in my view. Did you post a pic of the dress?

JaceLancs · 17/03/2026 10:52

@OhDear111 blush pink would work better but not found anything suitable yet
Dress pic - looks better on than on the hanger

Those Phase Eight dresses look great on, they really do. I agree, I think I’d go with blush pink jacket, take a close up shot so we can see all the colours. I still love the painting dress though, far more individual.

nonmerci99 · 17/03/2026 12:38

agree with the latter comments — the original dress could look very chic if you accessorise with brown, as you say. I’d go for it and ignore the rude comments :) What about some chunky gold jewellery to go with?

nopalite · 17/03/2026 13:31

@JaceLancsmy favourite out of your options is the cerise one and I agree with the PP that this would be the easiest to alter.

I know you don’t want to spend a lot when you’re still losing but I suspect the alterations will cost as much if not more than a dress off Vinted or similar. I guess it depends how attached you are to the dresses. You could sell them all on Vinted and get an outfit so you don’t feel like you’re shelling out too much.

The final dress I think would be really challenging to take in.
