Those who don't wear dresses or shorts in summer

Are we just bound to linen trousers. Is there anything I'm missing. I always dress in jeans and hoodies and joggers so I always feel bit trendy but in summer I get stuck and feel like a frump in my sandals and linen trousers but there is literally nothing else, rightt?

Why don't you wear dresses or shorts? There are so many varieties that it's a bit odd to write off whole categories of clothes.

I didn't used to as I am overweight but now wear shorts and maxi dresses, I'm much more comfortable in summer.

What’s the reason for wanting your legs covered?

(I’m rather keen on getting as much Vit D as possible over summer, so try to keep my legs exposed as far as possible in dresses and skirts.)

mynameiscalypso · 07/03/2026 14:17

I very rarely wear dresses/skirts/shorts, particularly in the UK. I do wear linen trousers but I wear lots of other types of trousers too - light jeans, khakis, barrel leg trousers etc. Unless it’s 30c+, I’m always comfortable in trousers.

I don't even own a summer dress! Long skirts don't suit ad I'd get sweaty thighs and I don't own shorts any shorter than my knees.

I live in linen, loose trousers. I also have culottes and some 3/4, cotton, capri type trousers.

JennyChawleigh · 07/03/2026 14:24

I have linen and viscose trousers, which don't crease as much as linen, also some ( from a charity shop) which have some silk content as well. I also have a pair of Rohan trousers which are some sort of synthetic fabric and amazingly cool.

SeekingThoughts · 07/03/2026 14:28

Wide leg trousers?/ cullottes look great with all
kinds of tops.
you can still wear joggers, just more lightweight like cotton jersey or Tencel.

BratPitt · 07/03/2026 14:41

I'm the same OP, linen trousers almost every day in the summer. Occasionally a maxi skirt if I can find one that doesn't make my stomach look huge. Boden used to do some good maxi skirts.

For a previous poster, I can't wear dresses or shorts as I have huge knees and calves, they look hideous.

muddyford · 07/03/2026 14:43

I wear cropped trousers. Not shorts nor anything shorter than midi length as my knees are not aging well.

Sannabay · 07/03/2026 14:45

Dislike the name but Harem Trousers perhaps?
Saw some in Next today.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 07/03/2026 14:51

I bought two pairs of lightweight wide leg cropped jeans from Zara last summer and lived in them.

FlatErica · 07/03/2026 14:57

I guess we are, OP. My legs are hairy, sturdy and white. I can’t be arsed with shaving, waxing, fake tan, real tan or any of the rest of it. I also can’t be arsed with peoples judgement- and people do judge. I just wear maxi skirts and linen trousers.

7238SM · 07/03/2026 15:00

I meant to add, one tip if you do get capri or any other tighter trouser/shorts, is have it end at the thinnest part of your leg. So ankle or just below the knee. If they finish mid calf- it can make your leg appear fatter. Well this is certainly true in my case anyway!

WhereIsMyLight · 07/03/2026 15:01

I don’t like linen trousers so just kind of battle it out in jeans. I’m going to try some harem trousers this year but I’ve never tried them before and they may look ridiculous.

I wear them all the time.

HeddaGarbled · 07/03/2026 15:15

I like those print summer trousers with elasticated waists and ankles that FatFace have every year.

damelza · 07/03/2026 15:22

Here's another No Dress woman, well only very occasionally. In Summer or on hols (not in high Summer either) I live in loose cotton just above the ankle trousers. They are the best thing ever for me and I'm rarely out of them! I have all colours but usually khaki, navy, cream and light green. Mix and match with loose tops and good to go!

Everyone is different, that's why shorts look great on some people but I look awful in them and I'm not fat and don't have big legs but just something isn't right with them on me. ON ME I said!

Also, there is the chub rub factor to consider with dresses FOR ME. Once had it and never will chance it again. Loose cotton trousers protect those inner legs from that!

Just wear what is right for you. No one else will care, too busy looking at themselves!

Electricsausages · 07/03/2026 15:34

I don’t even own a dress or skirt never mind wear one

RedRiverShore6 · 07/03/2026 15:38

Cotton trousers like M&S chinos, I have had a couple of basal cell carcinomas on my legs so like to cover them up.

I wear these all the time in summer, they are surprisingly flattering.

For those who asked, I hate my legs, think knobbly knees and thin while the rest of me is quite chunky lol.. I have to balance my frame in baggy bottoms..

Got some great ideas I'm going to check out, thanks all xx

That wouldn’t stop you wearing maxi skirts, though.

likelysuspect · 07/03/2026 16:35

I dont think Ive ever worn a dress and I dont wear shorts, or own any. I tend to wear similar things summer and winter, just slightly differen weight of fabric

So summer is linen shirts, jeans or loose flowy trousers and a similar top.

Bruisername · 07/03/2026 16:37

I wear exactly the same in winter as summer 🤣

jeans for casual and black trousers for work

for holiday I have some craghopper trousers which I will wear here if really hot and I have some midi dresses but again, only worn on holiday really

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 07/03/2026 16:54

Maxi skirt?
