Those who don't wear dresses or shorts in summer

Are we just bound to linen trousers. Is there anything I'm missing. I always dress in jeans and hoodies and joggers so I always feel bit trendy but in summer I get stuck and feel like a frump in my sandals and linen trousers but there is literally nothing else, rightt?

I wear dresses, skirts, jeans, leggings, knee length shorts, summer trousers. No need to just be linen pants? Xx

For the whole week where it's too hot for jeans, I wear the kind of baggy knee-length cargo shorts that people wear for hiking.

That's the same week that I stop using my electric blanket for.

Only two days last year I didn't use my heated blanket, it's too cold in England for summer clothes in my opinion. I do have a few pairs of sea salt jumbo cord culottes tho

Shinyandnew1 · 08/03/2026 18:35

I never wear shorts, I think look truly awful on me!

I wear denim skirts throughout the summer.

CarolinaInTheMorning · 08/03/2026 18:36

I live in the Southern US, where as you can imagine, it is very hot in the summer. For casual wear, for me it is usually cotton cropped trousers in light colors and a short sleeved t-shirt.

Spaghettion · 08/03/2026 18:53

Some ideas for your op, I brought myself some like these recently, all Tkmaxx and H&M, I really love the crochet ones and the cream barrel pair.

M&S have some lovely linen trousers in at the moment

damelza · 08/03/2026 18:58

Has anyone ever found a cotton/viscose blend in light Summer trousers? I don't wear linen as it is just too crumply. Something light but not needing any ironing and quick to dry. Straight leg not flappy sails in the wind type! Plain or patterned I don't care.

I can try find them myself, but others might just have found something like this already. Lazy me sorry!

The holy grail though I suppose!

Moonlightfrog · 08/03/2026 19:15

I don’t wear dresses either, I have tried but they are just not practical and I don’t like them. I do wear shorts but my legs are getting ugly now I have hit a certain age, my shorts have got longer. Last year I bought some jorts and I quite like them. I think I will buy some linen trousers this year and maybe a playsuit. I am struggling with what to wear this year as my shape has changed.

PeonyPatch · 08/03/2026 19:17

Silk trousers.

Next have loads of pure cotton summer trousers in at the moment. I was in store today and tried these ones on, but they had various colours and patterns.

Id love to wear a summer dress but I look like Hattie Jacques in everything I try.

I lived and worked in the Middle East for years, and always wore normal weight jeans, which work well because they wick sweat and help to keep you cool. In the very hottest weather now, I wear lightweight jeans like these: https://welligogs.com/products/icon-wheat-high-waisted-jeans?option1=UK%208. It’s so rarely that hot, though - I wear skinny jeans pretty well all year round, and change tops depending on the weather. In summer, I go for vests or T shirts, in winter several layers.

Icon Wheat High Waisted Jeans

Our Fuchsia high-waist women's jeans will be a constant go to. This is a classic basic that can be paired with almost any outfit. The high waisted style elongates the legs while the stretch cotton provides freedom of movement.

I guess we are, OP. My legs are hairy, sturdy and white. I can’t be arsed with shaving, waxing, fake tan, real tan or any of the rest of it. I also can’t be arsed with peoples judgement- and people do judge. I just wear maxi skirts and linen trousers.

Edited

I'm curious about the "people do judge" point. Are you sure about it?

In my experience the vaste majority absolutely doesn't care. I remember three cases over the last six years when I had a feeling that someone might have noticed my legs, but I can't be sure I didn't imagine that.

Of course, it might be region and bubble dependent, but I am comfortable with my hairy legs both at home and at holidays.

I don’t like linen trousers so just kind of battle it out in jeans. I’m going to try some harem trousers this year but I’ve never tried them before and they may look ridiculous.

Jeans are too hot in hot weather. I have linen trousers, cropped cotton chinos and cotton cargo trousers, all of which are much cooler than jeans.

Bellabellabellabella · 08/03/2026 22:00

I don’t wear shorts and I’m not keen on dresses. I like cotton jumpsuits, manly from Cos.

stapletonsguitar · 08/03/2026 22:05

I wear cotton/linen trousers all summer unless I’m on holiday. I’ve got some really comfy tapered ones that roll up at the bottom that I tend to wear in the day, and wide leg ones for going out (various colours)

Mich1986 · 08/03/2026 22:27

I know these are black, however they are so lightweight and comfortable. I pretty much live in these and can be dressed up or dressed down. Bargain as well. Possibly come in some other colours.

I manage to get some loose plain cotton trousers from M&S a couple of years ago for about £19, they were quite cool and comfortable with an elasticated waist and straight legs, I will dig them out again this summer. They probably do them each year.

henlake7 · 08/03/2026 22:41

I never get my legs out in summer. It's always either a maxi dress or t shirt and slip skirt/floaty trousers.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 09/03/2026 06:40

Uniqlo have some lovely relaxed and cool trousers

StarlightLady · 09/03/2026 08:18

I hardly ever wear jeans or trousers and live in dresses. I love my dresses. That first day out of a winter dress is special. Hardly ever wear shorts though. I think l still have some at the back of a drawer.

TabbyM · 09/03/2026 16:42

My varicose vein is getting nasty so I'm looking at many-pocketed walking trousers...

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 09/03/2026 16:48

Jeans and hoodies are trendy? Who knew!

I guess it depends on your life style and who your friends are. My idea of trendy may not be your idea of trendy, OP’s idea of trendy might not be your idea of trendy. I feel if you are the right build you look trendy in most things.

I wear jeans and hoodies by the way and I think floaty dresses and little shoes are not trendy.

Naddd · 10/03/2026 09:43

Wide leg Culottes, I got some from Asda in a textured fabric so no need to iron.
