Wedding Guest - No clue how to dress

needaglowupnow · 02/03/2026 19:57

I haven't been to a wedding for about 25 years. I dont follow fashion, dont often make a huge effort but really want to for this occasion as times passing me by.

What do people wear at wedding these days? I cant imagine wearing a hat or gloves or matching outfit (ie jacket/skirt). I would love to wear a bright colour but is that sniffed at?

I'm 5ft 4in, 52 years old, have light tanned skin, long brown hair, big chested and a size 8.

Any ideas please?

Style of wedding? Venue?
Budget? X

millit · 02/03/2026 20:07

I’ve just bought this for a wedding. Will be wearing with a black Chanel bag and heels.

White

It's at the parents' house with vast grounds. Not sure about the style. Most people would be similar age to me. It will be bride and grooms' 2nd marriages (not sure that is relevant),I dont think the bride will be wearing a traditional wedding gown.

That's very nice.

Try and find out what sort of vibe they are expecting, based on the information you gave it could be anything from super smart to festival casual,

mdinbc · 02/03/2026 20:47

I think any pretty tea length dress will do the trick, but wouldn't do hat or gloves. Choose comfy shoes with a low heel that you can wear all day, and depending on the location and time of year, a nice wrap, cardigan or blazer.

Do you have any nice stores near you that you can either bring a friend with you or spend time with a sales clerk for assistance?

As I've no idea of your budget and preferences I'd suggest looking at every dress on Liberty. They have their own range but also lots of other brands which you can then check on their own sites.

If I were looking for myself for something new, which I probably can't justify as I own several wedding guest options, I'd love this one.

The last wedding I was at I wore this

And Klements has other possibilities.

If I were looking for something new I'd also look at Sister Jane.

I might look at Justine Tabak

https://justinetabak.co.uk/collections/dresses?srsltid=AfmBOoogVF5oau9-F33fr4tdinDLahTNiE-4B5a7JApYyvk733B6gRhk

And Kemi Telford

Or this as it appeared on another thread
Karen Millen

And I'd quite like an excuse to buy this
Kindred of Ireland

And be keeping an eye on Cabbages and Roses on eBay and Vinted

It's not OTT. It's fine. You might need a jacket - short and boxy.

Some great suggestions. Thanks : )

I agree with the pp that said a tea dress they flatter the big of boob and you can rewear it all summer.
In the past I have changed in the evening at weddings as i get cold sitting outside all evening in a dress.

HeNeedsRehab · 02/03/2026 21:34

I think never fully dressed is a great suggestion. With your figure you could wear pretty much the whole site!

I do really like the one shoulder metallic spot dress they do, they tend to release different colours of it each season. I’d buy one myself but am too wibbly all over!

savvy7 · 02/03/2026 22:04

I like Me and Em. There are some nice dresses in the sale section

WashedUpInAustin · 03/03/2026 00:16

@needaglowupnow Love this! Very gorgeous! I'd probably wear it with Cream or Black espadrilles (the strap ones, not the lace up the leg ones) & a cream cross body bag, myself. When is the wedding? Will you need a cardigan/jacket?

Op that is so nice!

I was worried for you as most of the other dresses i’ve seen suggested are hideous.

Oh, thank God you said that. I was beginning to think it was just me.

@needaglowupnow that caught my eye, too. It’s lovely.

Reliablesource · 03/03/2026 07:22

Although everyone on MN will talk about dresses, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a trouser suit to a wedding if you’re not comfortable in a dress. I wouldn’t be seen dead in a dress or skirt, and always wear trousers. Am going to a wedding this summer and have bought a trouser suit from Next in a gorgeous dusky pink. They do it in petite and regular sizes. Am pairing with a pink floral shirt and velvet trainers in a matching pink from Jigsaw.

There are some real horrors on this thread aren't there.
That MaxMara sack dress is particularly unflattering.
