Wedding Guest - No clue how to dress

needaglowupnow · 02/03/2026 19:57

I haven't been to a wedding for about 25 years. I dont follow fashion, dont often make a huge effort but really want to for this occasion as times passing me by.

What do people wear at wedding these days? I cant imagine wearing a hat or gloves or matching outfit (ie jacket/skirt). I would love to wear a bright colour but is that sniffed at?

I'm 5ft 4in, 52 years old, have light tanned skin, long brown hair, big chested and a size 8.

Any ideas please?

As I've no idea of your budget and preferences I'd suggest looking at every dress on Liberty. They have their own range but also lots of other brands which you can then check on their own sites.

https://www.libertylondon.com/uk/department/women/clothing/dresses/

If I were looking for myself for something new, which I probably can't justify as I own several wedding guest options, I'd love this one.

The last wedding I was at I wore this

And Klements has other possibilities.

If I were looking for something new I'd also look at Sister Jane.

I might look at Justine Tabak

https://justinetabak.co.uk/collections/dresses?srsltid=AfmBOoogVF5oau9-F33fr4tdinDLahTNiE-4B5a7JApYyvk733B6gRhk

And Kemi Telford

https://kemitelford.com/collections/dresses?srsltid=AfmBOoqoRHDQbeUr0nlbBySMHPFz5OVyUr83MYGrVFm4THd8pqphg8M1

Or this as it appeared on another thread
Karen Millen

And I'd quite like an excuse to buy this
Kindred of Ireland

And be keeping an eye on Cabbages and Roses on eBay and Vinted

Edited

The Kindred of Ireland dress is so beautiful.

GoldenCupsatHarvestTime · 03/03/2026 08:56

Generally a cocktail or morning dress.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/03/2026 09:15

Eek. The Zara one is just very ordinary and the other two are frightful.

White
always white

Unkind

A bright colour would be fine. What colours do you like? Where do you usually like to shop? Do you have a budget in mind? Have you already got shoes and/or a bag to work around?

MiddleAgedDread · 03/03/2026 11:04

if you're bigger of the boob then I'd stay away from strappy dresses so you can wear a decent bra underneath.

Although everyone on MN will talk about dresses, it’s perfectly acceptable to wear a trouser suit to a wedding if you’re not comfortable in a dress. I wouldn’t be seen dead in a dress or skirt, and always wear trousers. Am going to a wedding this summer and have bought a trouser suit from Next in a gorgeous dusky pink. They do it in petite and regular sizes. Am pairing with a pink floral shirt and velvet trainers in a matching pink from Jigsaw.

I have just this minute bought this for a wedding it is a late afternoon wedding, i am 54 had no clue what to wear thank you i won't need to start my own thread 😀

Tamboreen · 03/03/2026 11:40

Maybe just check out some wedding photography websites, you'll be able to find ones in your area at various venues. There should be lots of examples on there of what wedding guests wear.

DataColour · 03/03/2026 11:41

Absolutely love that Nobody's Child dress. Get it!

Yay!! It’s a gorgeous suit and the only one I could find without hideous wide leg trousers! I found the regular length trousers a bit short for my liking even though I’m only 5ft 3, so ended up exchanging for the long length. I also got the jacket in petite and the arms were the perfect length. Enjoy the suit and the wedding! 🙂

I was at a wedding last year. First one since my own. I bought a nice dress on Vinted. It’s from Oasis, a brand I always liked and had similar style dresses before so I knew it would fit. Got my hair done and bobs your uncle. No hats or gloves!

BertyFlanter · 03/03/2026 11:48

Lace and Beads, has its own website and available on ASOS. I just purchased a beautiful dress for a wedding in May. I will need to have it taken up as I'm on the short side, but also a size 8 and large of nork.

Miranda65 · 03/03/2026 11:51

Just a nice dress (not too much flesh on show) and appropriate but comfortable shoes.
Or an elegant jumpsuit/trousers and floaty top.
No hat or gloves.
Also, don't fall for the "everything matching" thing, because that does look dated.
Basically, just be decent, feel OK and don't try to outshine the bride!

Im 5ft(ish) and i have ordered petite the wide legged trousers just flap about me like a sail i prefer straight leg too

Elsvieta · 03/03/2026 12:14

Just a nice dress in a pretty colour that you'll want to wear for other things. Some people think green at weddings is unlucky apparently. But any other colour! Hat isn't needed unless you forgot to mention the thing is VERY posh - just look "polished" overall with makeup, hair, bag etc and you're good.

RampantIvy · 03/03/2026 12:24

If you think you will be spending a lot of time outdoors I would either wear flats or wedge heeled shoes. There is nothing worse than getting your heels stuck in someone's lawn (although they might thank you for aerating it for them).

Chewbecca · 03/03/2026 15:48

Both your dress choices are lovely OP. My only concern would be being cold, what time of year is it and do you run cold?

WashedUpInAustin · 03/03/2026 00:16

@needaglowupnow Love this! Very gorgeous! I'd probably wear it with Cream or Black espadrilles (the strap ones, not the lace up the leg ones) & a cream cross body bag, myself. When is the wedding? Will you need a cardigan/jacket?

oh great - wedding is in July, so as close as we get to decent weather here. I had to google espadrilles - cool idea!

Just have to make sure I dont drink too much fizz or else I'll have a fall and break bones at my stage in life.

Many of these are gorgeous, Im not too sure about the shiny/satin look for a wedding? They are so nice though. Roll on Summer! I might just buy some for the sake of it and book an event afterwards to wear them at.

Ha Ha, much of it will be outside so the Black espadrilles as suggested by another poster would be suitable. I'm getting rather excited now!

This is my main reason for posting, I don't want to look like I've tried too hard and OTT because it's the brides day to shine (not that I'd look as nice as her). But I do want to feel good about myself for the event as I'm a hermit and hence indoors most of the year.
