Wedding Guest - No clue how to dress

needaglowupnow · 02/03/2026 19:57

I haven't been to a wedding for about 25 years. I dont follow fashion, dont often make a huge effort but really want to for this occasion as times passing me by.

What do people wear at wedding these days? I cant imagine wearing a hat or gloves or matching outfit (ie jacket/skirt). I would love to wear a bright colour but is that sniffed at?

I'm 5ft 4in, 52 years old, have light tanned skin, long brown hair, big chested and a size 8.

Any ideas please?

oh great - wedding is in July, so as close as we get to decent weather here. I had to google espadrilles - cool idea!

Just have to make sure I dont drink too much fizz or else I'll have a fall and break bones at my stage in life.

I'm exited for youGrin
Hopefully the weather will at least be warm then.
I've just been googling bag etc that I'd pair it with.

I always rely on Never Fully Dressed for wedding attire, can't go wrong.

Bristolandlazy · 03/03/2026 18:04

This isn't it the top, it's lovely. You're the same age as me, I don't care about fashion and wouldn't wear half the suggestions on here. Some are quite shapeless. My go to would be a floral dress. Nobody's Child sell lovely dresses. I would look at Monsoon too, but that's my taste. Hat/gloves certainly not needed. With your shape you have lots of options. Enjoy.

Delatron · 03/03/2026 18:41

Your options look lovely. I’d still factor in a cover up/jacket/ cardigan for a strappy dress - even in July we can get rain and not great weather.

keffie12 · 03/03/2026 18:47

I think it depends on what you like and style of wedding. Accessories make a dress too.

I bought this one recently from Very. It was bought in a sale with another dress.

The other dress, that was expensive was the one meant for the wedding. It was awful and nothing like the picture online.

The one pictured below I expected to send back. I didn't.

It's absolutely perfect. I'm accessorising with silver bag and shoes. The loose tie doesn't have to be worn round the neck. It's not fixed

The dress you've linked is great, OP.

Here's a similar one in case the one you've chosen does not work for whatever reason: https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/maeve-sleeveless-square-neck-drop-waist-midi-dress2?color=560

No no no 🤦🏼‍♀️
Thats ok for a day at the beach but not for a wedding.

BigAnne · 03/03/2026 21:50

Have a look at Roman Originals petite range. Very budget friendly.

That would have looked fine at the last couple of weddings I attended. I don't get invited to very formal weddings.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 04/03/2026 10:15

I'm a few years older than you and 5ft tall. Like you I'm slim with big boobs.

I'd wear a jumpsuit. They are smart, comfortable annd very flattering to our sort of body shape and they don't need much accessorizing. I nearly always have to have the legs taken up and sometimes the shoulders taken in a bit but after that they are stress free dressing. They look dressy with heels but after the wedding you can reuse them for other occasions with trainers or boots.

Phase 8 do some nice ones and so do Sugarhill Brighton

GoldDuster · 04/03/2026 12:13

The dress you've linked is excellent, although don't jump to black shoes with it, black can really drag a colour down. If you're going espadrilles, I think a metallic would work better with that colour.

CreepyCoupe · 04/03/2026 12:21

I went to a wedding where THREE women were wearing the Never Fully Dressed Tilly dress, 2 in an identical colour.

For this risk (and the fact they’re polyester), I’d be inclined to avoid.

I’ve ordered this from Reiss for an upcoming wedding. Not sure if it will be too prone to creasing.

I’ve just bought this for a wedding. Will be wearing with a black Chanel bag and heels.

I love this. Do you have a link?
