Sophisticated - expensive Christmas jumper?

christmastreeblues · 12/12/2025 15:01

Am fed up with buying a new Christmas jumper each year and it always looking rubbish! I am prepared to invest money in a lovely piece of knitwear to last me. I am looking for something with some sparkle, preferably in a cool toned colour such as proper white, navy, light grey, charcoal etc - not browns.

Can anyone recommend one?

Some off-white or black vintage cardigans (plus a sleeveless jumper) with pearls/jewels/sequins/braid that add sparkle. There are loads on Etsy, though the ones abroad probably wouldn't arrive for this Christmas! But it's worth looking for UK locations. I got a couple of really beautiful ones from Etsy.

More on Vinted. I do count the sleeveless ones as "jumpers" as they're a knitted fine wool base with sequins & beads embroidered on.

True vintage cardigans on Vinted - ie 50s/60s. These are often pure wool angora or cashmere.

By expensive - do you have a budget? And do you like true vintage or prefer modern? If expensive for you is say, £200, it gets bit tricky as there are fewer sequin/lurex/sparkly things out there at higher prices.

I wear a shirt with a Christmas print and a plain cardigan; if you like a vintage look, these are on sale at present.

Brora have some lovely knitwear but it is quite pricey!

Hi OP, not 100% what you asked, but I bought a lovely Christmas brooch (a sparkly tree, with red and gold decorations on a green tree) and I wear it to Christmas events on a nice top - sometimes a dressy top; sometimes a sweater; sometimes a jacket. It might be an idea - I could never find a Christmas jumper that I loved.

Here it is though the daddy of all Christmas jumpers €1,500 from Loewe, Mumsnet has labelled the photo as sensitive and honestly they have a point, the price is actually offensive to most people

That's a great deal of money to pay for being a walking advertisement.

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/12/2025 17:05

I got a beautiful one from The White Company last year. Grey cashmere mix with subtle snowflakes.

XelaM · 14/12/2025 01:10

Funnily enough my daughter was looking for a sophisticated Christmas jumper and she found some really lovely ones in Tesco Extra for around £35. Everyone was complimenting her on it and it's very nice white cable-knit jumper with subtle Christmas writing on the front.

Zadig and Voltaire. Not really Christmas jumpers, but nice cashmere and lots with stars that can fill that void tastefully 😊

Yes I tend to go for starts, a glitter thread in the knit or a few sequins judiciously scattered. Nordic with small patterns can be ok. White Company often do some low key options in creams, silvers and charcoal.

Reindeer and santas etc tend to make me feel a bit embarrassed ever since my friend got a Christmas jumper given to her for them "all" to be matching (by MIL I think) and said she had one big reindeer eyeball on each boob - or something like that. She said in any other circumstance than Christmas it would have looked provocatively obscene.

I would have this 100%
alas, I am too poor!

I bought a beautiful Christmas cardigan from the USA who do this much better than we do. I also have a ski sweater I'm very fond of.

If you want sophistication try a Christmas themed brooch on a jumper much more subtle.

Chattanoogachoo · 14/12/2025 21:27

Chinti and Parker are excellent, I have 4 of their jumpers and love them. Quite light yet warm and the designs are very simple.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 14/12/2025 21:31

I crocheted very fine delicate silver stars on a chain.

Tack them round neck and cuffs. Voila!

Dd borrowed them to put on her very expensive posh cashmere jumper. She got loads of compliments. You can then just buy a normal expensive jumper!

dudsville · 14/12/2025 21:54

Harley of Scotland fair isle jumpers are lovely. They often team with Toast but if you Google you'll get a broad range of colours.

Foofedifiknow · 14/12/2025 23:47

There is a market for a posh Xmas jumper that retailers aren’t meeting.
Even the pricey Bella Freud one is polyester.

Doggymummar · 15/12/2025 07:44

I wrote this thread last year. I actually got a Eribe cardigan rrp £300 for £8 from Whatnot. It's Orange Fairisle and can be worn all year round.

WhiteCatmas · 15/12/2025 08:39

Good grief Whistles, 79£ for viscose!
I bought a subtle shimmer navy crew neck top in M&S for under 20£. They have a few similar subtle shimmery tops.
I too was looking for a simple Xmas jumper but failed.
