These shoes with tights? Old fashioned?

Trying to get sorted for a Christmas party night with colleagues.

Have a black embellished velvet dress that sits a couple of inches above the knee that I’ve only worn once so hoping to rewear that. I don’t like bare legs or nude tights so I was thinking sheet black tights and some kind of closed toe heels. Do these shoes look old fashioned? I’m 35, have no idea what’s in style anymore and haven’t been “out out” since last Christmas 🤣🤣
Help a girl out here!

They are lovely shoes OP and I would be wearing them with black tights as you suggested.

Those shoes have been fashionable again recently, OP @BeenChangedForGood They are more on trend than the Esska ones which look a bit summer 2023 to me. Also, it's winter! I wouldn't be seen dead in a platform opened-toed sandal with an embellished velvet dress. Those shoes and thin black tights with the dress you describe sounds just the ticket to me.

I like those Whistles ones @Namechangerage but definitely more than I’d like to spend. I did also see these Monsoon ones when looking before but wasn’t sure of the square toe.

i always think they are a bit Pat Butcher.

You might not like them, but they're definitely on trend. The 40 denier style sort of thing.

OP - I think the shoes in your first post are fine, but I would either wear nude tights or use some fake tan and have bare legs?

Forthelov · 28/11/2025 11:54

I think those shoes are perfect.

NancyJoan · 28/11/2025 12:13

Ankle boots would be better with a shortish dress.

ElleintheWoods · 28/11/2025 12:32

Doesn't matter 'what's in style', does it? I wear a lot of things that I like and think look good and comfortable, definitely not trendy, and get complimented lots for them. Meanwhile, trendy outfits will be out there en masse and not actually stand out.

If it looks good to you, you look into the mirror and go 'yup, love it', it'll look good.

Your entire outfit is black and quite conservative, so I'd perhaps be more playful with the tights and go for something a bit out there, e.g. patterns, drawings, fishnets etc.

Freebus · 28/11/2025 12:36

They look good to me. Probably better with nude tights

I’m 35 too and I think they’re lovely 🤷🏼‍♀️

I‘m 32. These are the kinds of wearable, fairly safe (edit: safe = I’m unlikely to twist my ankle…) shoes I‘d wear to a Christmas party.

I own a similar pair (although round toes, the heel is slightly higher) in light blue. They’re the spring / summer counterpart and perfect for afternoon weddings or brunch.

luckylavender · 28/11/2025 12:46

I like them. Ignore the naysayers.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 28/11/2025 13:53

I think the shoes are nice and would look good with sheer black tights. How on earth this would ‘age’ you is beyond me and I wouldn’t give a fuck anyway.

lolly427 · 28/11/2025 14:12

Nude tights make me think Nora Batty, I had no idea so many people wore them, I think they're horrid. I'd go black every time even if it's considered dated now.

Those shoes look like a perfectly normal pair of shoes to go out at Christmas in. If they're safe and boring I can't picture what unsafe or unboring shoes look like. Maybe they need red ribbon bows or something.

Stigsmother · 28/11/2025 15:41

Another vote for fishnets, many different options these days, I think if you can find the fine mesh style they will look great

Some party sandals from Joanie were mentioned on another thread and about £55 now with Black Friday. I was thinking of going for them but a little bit high for me.
I have ordered 3 pairs of the Esska sandals and they are very comfortable and easy to walk in, hoping the last colourway I have ordered from JL on sale will be the one!
