These shoes with tights? Old fashioned?

Trying to get sorted for a Christmas party night with colleagues.

Have a black embellished velvet dress that sits a couple of inches above the knee that I’ve only worn once so hoping to rewear that. I don’t like bare legs or nude tights so I was thinking sheet black tights and some kind of closed toe heels. Do these shoes look old fashioned? I’m 35, have no idea what’s in style anymore and haven’t been “out out” since last Christmas 🤣🤣
Help a girl out here!

I quite like them and would wonder if fishnets would be okay. I await the onslaught of "do not wear fishnets" 😄

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 27/11/2025 19:30

Sheer tights have been back on younger women for about 2 years now!

They are fine but I am mid 50s and wouldn’t wear them. I think they’re very ‘safe’. But if you like them then go for it.

NewGoldFox · 27/11/2025 19:33

I think they’re fine. Also worth remembering no one pays that much attention to what you wear, they’re thinking about their own outfit, have a great night 🎄💃🏻

HolidayPlanningAgain · 27/11/2025 19:39

I think you need a higher side on the shoe of wearing tights, some ankle boots would look great

OneBadKitty · 27/11/2025 19:45

According to 20 yo DD sheer tights are the current trend, it's opaques that are out.

Patterned sheer tights are very in so you could funk them up with some leopard patterned, lace, fishnets, spotty or sparkly ones?

And those heeled pump style shoes are actually all coming back in fashion- have a look in the shops as they're full of them. Although i think a slim heel is more on trend than the block heel on this pair.

Those chunky Esska style heels are no longer the height of fashion! I'd say they are pretty much out and dated now!

socool · 27/11/2025 19:45

They are absolutely fine OP. For a one off event I'd have no issue with wearing them, as long as you can walk ok in them they'll fit the bill. No need to spend a fortune on something that will end up at the back of the shoe rack for another few years.

However, please do NOT wear black tights of any description with them. Try nude tights with them and get used to them.

Blocky blocky heels are a bit meh to me, ankle boots with a dressy dress might work, but I think they are far too "industrial" for an event. I mean few would wear ankle boots to a wedding I'd say! but I could be wrong, well I wouldn't FWIW. Spindle heels give me vertigo. So the ones you have will be just fine. Nude tights though, remember 😊

BeenChangedForGood · 27/11/2025 19:47

🤣🫠 oh wow! That’s a mixed bag 🫠 Any suggestions are very welcome ☺️

I’m usually either in a long dress with chunky platform peep toes like Esska, or a shorter dress with thick black tights and boots.

I hate my legs so black tights is a must - whether thick or sheer. And I will not wear tights with an open toed shoe 😬 also would rather a shoe than a boot. And I have an old ankle injury which does not like a thin heel so block heel is a must.

I don’t wear heels a huge amount so would rather not spend a fortune. £100 would be my absolute limit but less would be ideal.

Not being smart, but if you hate your legs so much (why may I ask?) maybe it would be better to buy a longer dress or long skirt and sparkly top combo.

I just think black tights with all black will look funeral like.

travailtotravel · 27/11/2025 19:53

Those shoes are fine- safe choice which is not bad. But wear them with nude tights. If the nudes tights are a total no, and black sheers are it its a different shoe!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 27/11/2025 19:56

No one will notice your shoes!

@socool I’ve had a few health issues this year and am struggling with how I feel about my body to be honest. I did try on a few other options in the shops but felt awful in them all.
i feel good in the dress I have so wanted to try and make that work 🤷🏻‍♀️
I have some marks on my legs which I would rather were covered.

Thanks all for your opinions. I’ll get hunting for another shoe 🫠🤣

I have these shoes and I’m under 40. I think they look great with every dress I have worn them with and they are comfy. Wear what you feel comfortable in and have fun. I cannot recall ever being at a social event and remembering what someone wore unless I liked it.

owlpassport · 27/11/2025 20:38

Another option might be knee high boots? E.g. https://www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.1296676002.html?

Only really works if your skirt is short, a couple of inches above the knee might not quite work.

I get you. I have horrible broken veins on my ankles and I rarely "get them out" in Summer (rest of the time they are covered up!). I bit the bullet this Summer though and got leg make up Sally Hansen and honestly it worked great. Important to get the nearest to your skin tone.

I think if you used something like like that (Dermacol and Dermablend are brilliant cover ups also), and then put on the nude tights, it might be an option.

Don't ditch those shoes. They are perfectly fine, honestly.

Ineffable23 · 27/11/2025 20:46

I like them but I would go with nude tights not black tights.

Edit: missed that you want black tights. What about non sheer nude potentially? I think you can get non sheer tights for dance.

sunsu · 27/11/2025 20:56

OP after reading your updates, I’d wear these shoes with sheer black tights. I think it would look great!

I wear lots of black velvet dresses and wear patterned black tights and platform Mary Janes. Snag tights have great winter/Christmas themed ones at the mo with 30% off.

These are a great suggestion!

Neverplayleapfrogwithmrpipes · 27/11/2025 23:06

I actually love them x they are reminding me of some I had in the late 90s

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/11/2025 23:33

I quite like them. I think they'd be absolutely fine with sheer black tights.

80smonster · 27/11/2025 23:42

Sheer black tights on trend, however those shoes are giving serious office nanna vibes.

BankfieldForever · 27/11/2025 23:46

I’m 55 and I think they look dated.

I believe black tights are coming back but I’d wear them with more modern shoes.

Catwoman8 · 27/11/2025 23:49

Love the sound of your dress OP, but sorry I think the shoes are abit meh. There are lots of pointy ,sling back flats or kitten heels in the shops are the moment that are abit more on trend. If you do insist on tights, sheer black would be best as opaques are more dated imo. I also think boots would work with sheer black tights.

Crispynoodle · 27/11/2025 23:57

Sheer black tights are on trend, not dated!

💯 this bang on trend!
