Does anybody else get disappointed when a brand they like ends up in M&S?

Spiracles · 21/11/2025 20:34

M&S seems to be gobbling up everything.

Kitri, Albaray, Never Fully Dressed, Nobody's Child, Chinti and Parker...

I'm not even including Baukjen and Hush. Although obvs the next one would be ME+EM.

I find some brands I like, doing interesting stuff, then they end up on M&S 😥

I wouldn’t say it’s the same as any other regular brand here because it’s a not a UK brand. You can’t buy it wherever you want as there are only London shops.

As I said it is not the same as M&S…

It's a very mainstream brand worn by everyone that can be bought online with just a couple of clicks. There's no exclusivity.

Vivianebrooksmatsumoto · 22/11/2025 18:36

I can't see the issue. It brings those label better exposure, it's not as if those brands are making cheaper made items for M&S like the higher end ones do for outlet villages!
If my favourite French brand started selling via M&S I'd be delighted as they no longer send here post brexit.

Yes, but it's nice to track down a brand you like, and not be wearing the same stuff as everyone else.

For M&S to sell them they already have to be large enough to support the demand with on-hand inventory. They’re not niche or boutique by a long shot at that stage.

This feels a bit like a teenager sulking because other people have discovered their band.

😆 and had the gall to wear the tshirt!

curious79 · 22/11/2025 18:40

I love it! There and next, aggregating brands so you don’t have to search 50 different websites. I bought the most beautiful jumper from there the other day, but Jaeger. Would never have seen it otherwise.

BakedBeing · 22/11/2025 18:42

Floisme · 22/11/2025 16:09

I wouldn't mind as long as the brand wasn't put under pressure to compromise on style/quality/price in order to suit the M&S demographic (whatever that is but let's park that for now).

That said, I'm not sure how much it really brings these other brands to a wider audience because, like @ballroompink, I've not seen any of them in my local high street store. I suppose it would mean I could order, collect and return them through M&S but I still wouldn't be able to see or try anything on first.

Agree with this. Also I think in the cases when they actually buy a brand it becomes pointless as the brand loses their identity and whatever made them unique.

Jaeger is one of the brands they’ve actually bought rather than just assort. It went into administration.

I so miss BHS for bedding and lighting

For nearly two decades they were my go to for school uniform and lighting. No comparison since.

Skybluepinky · 22/11/2025 18:55

If you want different go to a tailor and get handmade to fit you perfectly then you can have exactly what you want.

Not stuff off the peg then main loads of people are wearing it.

God forbid that people from ‘the provinces’ might be able to access something. Outrageous!

Or the hoi polloi. It really is dreadful.

Just look at the part of the label that tells you where it is made (by the thousands).

Fashion is all about looking the same, whether it is clothing, false eyelashes or plucking one's eyebrows.

Atina321 · 22/11/2025 19:25

Spiracles · 21/11/2025 20:38

Yeah, but sometimes it's nice to have something a bit different, that the whole country hasn't discovered.

How soon before Wyse London are on there, they're probably coming for Rixo as well...

Are you really gatekeeping? If you have somewhere local that makes beautiful clothes why wouldn’t you want them to do well and share it with others?

Tryingatleast · 22/11/2025 19:28

I love m and s. It closed down in our town- miss it!

Yes, but it's nice to track down a brand you like, and not be wearing the same stuff as everyone else.

It’s also nice when they survive in these tough times, and they need to reach a wider audience to do that

Blades2 · 22/11/2025 20:52

First world probs 😂

Well, you know, most of the brands you mention are mass produced polyester eg Finery. I got some of their stuff about a decade ago, but the quality has deteriorated since then. And their designs are v boring now.

DeedsNotDiddums · 22/11/2025 22:10

I don't understand what the problem is. M&S hasn't taken over those companies- they're just selling something for them.

Letterasaurus · 22/11/2025 22:23

Oh Spiracles darling, all those brands you mention are off-the-peg!
If you really want exclusivity you should be wearing couture!

DetectiveDouche · 22/11/2025 23:01

You are being very snobby about this OP

Airspice · 23/11/2025 00:06

Haha this is hilarious, am I the only person who has never heard of any of those brands?!! 😂

Me, but spent the past 20 years in Canada

Horses7 · 23/11/2025 06:39

Thanks for letting me know - I’ll use M&S online more now!

Cantbloodyrememberthenameonthread · 22/11/2025 09:37

I’m always torn about stuff like this. I love having things that no one else has, that said I always worry the brand will go under as if I’m their sole customer 🤣

for example my staple and favourite perfume went “viral” and I was gutted. It’s been my scent since it was exclusive to one store years ago. Now I can’t enter a bar without both men and women wearing it!

there’s a website online that do the most fabulous and unique clothes. Really special. They have sooo many pieces and they’re made to order I wonder how they’re still going but I never want to share it 🤣

Bet it’s molecule no1

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 23/11/2025 07:04

RedRiverShore5 · 22/11/2025 08:42

The only way a lot of these brands will keep going is to be sold in M&S, Next and JL.

Yep. While they can't support independent stores for these brands, they have saved various clothing companies from administration.

Arcticienne · 23/11/2025 07:43

There is NO way the brands you suggest and others like them will EVER be available in retail outlets in regional towns and cities. Even more so in our on-line age. So, many folks will be thanking M&S. Only downside is that in-store space is becoming a bit like Primark with hardly any room to move between racks.
