Does anybody else get disappointed when a brand they like ends up in M&S?

Spiracles · 21/11/2025 20:34

M&S seems to be gobbling up everything.

Kitri, Albaray, Never Fully Dressed, Nobody's Child, Chinti and Parker...

I'm not even including Baukjen and Hush. Although obvs the next one would be ME+EM.

I find some brands I like, doing interesting stuff, then they end up on M&S 😥

This feels a bit like a teenager sulking because other people have discovered their band.

MidnightPatrol · 21/11/2025 20:39

Not disappointed - but if I wanted to look at those brands (and some I like), I’d go to their websites.

It means across a range of sites I look at, there is increasingly overlap in what they’re offering - AND they all have ridiculously massive range that you need to trawl though.

Agree, I hate it when other brands pop up on M&S.

jan2310 · 22/11/2025 11:43

No. I have never given this a moment’s thought.

NuffSaidSam · 22/11/2025 11:52

But there's still the same range of stuff, it's just now all available in one place. It doesn't mean everyone will be wearing the same. It' got a wider audience now definitely, but it doesn't mean that wider audience is going to be gobbling it up. If they do, you can switch over to M&S own brand or whatever everyone else isn't wearing anymore and be individual in that way if that's important to you.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 22/11/2025 11:55

OP obviously doesn’t want the riff-raff to have access to her exclusive brands.😂

ThatCyanCat · 22/11/2025 12:01

Lastfroginthebox · 22/11/2025 09:23

Why does it matter that they end up on M&S if they're still the same brands?

Edited

People buy from their emotions. It may not make sense but if someone likes the idea of buying from a more independent retailer then that is likely to influence their buying decisions.

That said, I don't think selling via M&S will do any business any harm. But I do understand why people don't like it.

Edit: I didn't put that link in the post. I'd space it out to stop it but I assume MN Towers wants it there...

Lastfroginthebox · 22/11/2025 12:01

NorWouldTilly · 22/11/2025 09:36

Do you genuinely not understand that different brands make different styles of clothes, @Lastfroginthebox?

I shop all over the place (99% online) but am always looking for a certain degree of specificity and a particular level of quality. What I like doesn’t appeal to everyone (see my many years of S&B posts, under many names, generally widely derided). The purpose of M&S is to appeal to as wide a range of people as possible; to be accessible - so it’s diametrically opposite to what I want in my wardrobe.

Edited

Yes, actually I do genuinely understand that different brands have different styles. I'm more inclined to shop in some places than others. But that doesn't mean I can't have a look everywhere and buy from different places. I don't care if what I buy has the 'right' label and I don't mind if other people can find the things that I can.

PGmicstand · 22/11/2025 12:03

I honestly couldn't care less. If items of clothing are available to buy, people that like them will buy them.

Lastfroginthebox · 22/11/2025 12:04

@NorWouldTilly P S. Your last sentence is what I mean. M&S just provide a platform so that lots of people have access to many brands. It seems a bit selfish of OP to want to keep those brands hidden from others!

Giraffemug30 · 22/11/2025 12:07

Ita not like sezanne or rixo or never fully dressed or nobodies child are completely unique unheard of brands, they are famous brands that most people have heard of

Stocking them in m&S means that basically people that don't live in London can see their clothes and try them on. They are all brands that are stocked in my nearby department store, and Frasers or John Lewis (apart from maybe sezane but that's a worldwide brand) I don't see the issue with adding m&S to the mix if it means they can keep going

ParmaVioletTea · 22/11/2025 12:35

Why are you disappointed? Surely, given the disappearance of other department stores, it’s useful to have these brands under one roof? Especially if you don’t have a John Lewis nearby.

Can you explain @Spiracles ?

Exactly.

ParmaVioletTea · 22/11/2025 12:39

Oh don’t be silly OP. These are all ready to wear brands. They’re mass-produced clothing. Even if you think they’re “exclusive “ brands and you don’t want the M&S hoi pollloi wearing them.

if you want something different you need to find a tailor or dress-maker or make your own

That’s what I do - I rarely wear clothes that come off the peg. Don’t want to see someone walking down the street in the same ready made clothes.

Doesn't bother me at all but I wish my local M&S actually stocked some of these other brands! It's a big store but only sells their own brand womenswear.

Floisme · 22/11/2025 16:09

I wouldn't mind as long as the brand wasn't put under pressure to compromise on style/quality/price in order to suit the M&S demographic (whatever that is but let's park that for now).

That said, I'm not sure how much it really brings these other brands to a wider audience because, like @ballroompink, I've not seen any of them in my local high street store. I suppose it would mean I could order, collect and return them through M&S but I still wouldn't be able to see or try anything on first.

lifeonmars100 · 22/11/2025 16:19

I like it, you can go into M and S and look at these brands and see what the quality is like which isn't easy to do online.

😂 Perish the thought of scruffy peasants who of course would not know how to accessorise properly, shuffling around in posh clothes

These are all mass-produced clothes, mostly from India or China. Nothing special. I’m shocked at how even supposedly “premium” brands of off the peg clothes use masses of polyester.

You may have noticed the fact that I know they are stocked by Marks. And how do I know that? It's a mystery.

I presume you go on their website and/or into one of their larger stores, why would anyone be mystified by that?

Try and work through this with me. I know you can do it.

I know they are stocked by Marks because I also go to Marks.

Why would I, as a person who frequents Marks, think I'm better than other people who also frequent Marks?

HereWeGo1234 · 22/11/2025 17:59

why on earth would you be disappointed? It’s great imo. Less websites to go through.

Birlngsnotnicepeople · 22/11/2025 18:07

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 22/11/2025 08:41

Ridiculous post. Brands clearly want to work with Marks, and get a wider audience. If you want to wear something that nobody else does, learn to make it yourself or don’t be such a bloody snob.

Funny! My budget just about stretches to M and S on a good day.
