Im going to a wedding this December. I need a dress. Could be full length, could be more of a cocktail or party dress. I’m 5ft2, green eyes, brown hair, size 10 but big hips (!). I love chocolate brown & almost any green & orange. Any ideas?

What about this VB dress? Think the Net a Porter sale might be coming soon which would bring dress into your price range

I’d never squeeze into it!

What about something like this?

https://www.reiss.com/style/su789822/h69524

note, in Reiss and me + em, you will need petite as they are long.

It’s going to be December. I know the heating will be on but even now the thought of an open back is making me cold…just me?!

It is beautiful though!

It is but realistically in winter half of it will be covered up.

It’s lovely but I think I’d have to have a totally flat stomach!

Ive always thought velvet was very old hat but apparently it is having a moment & that dress is lovely
https://www.vogue.com/slideshow/best-velvet-dresses

I love good-quality velvet - your list features that chocolate velvet Me+Em one, which would look fab with gold jewellery. One thing though, with velvet on your bottom half (ie skirts/trousers/dresses), I think it only works for special occasion/infrequently worn items - not for everyday pieces. Eventually, with frequent wear, you always get a shiny bottom - whatever you do!

ooh definitely going to try that one. I worry I am not skinny enough for Cefinn but this is beautiful

I am a new convert to Cefinn. I’m a size 14 with big hips but their sizing is generous and I am comfortably a 12 in their dresses. [Not bad considering I was a size 20 a couple of years ago!]

They use a service called Harper where for £10 they will bring the clothes to you and wait while you try them on and you only pay for what you keep. So you can order a few dresses in different sizes to try.

What about this https://www.harveynichols.com/ganni/floral-print-jersey-maxi-dress-52529-bkot-black-235764/
Can be dressed up or down would get lots of wear

Or https://www.harveynichols.com/ganni/velvet-maxi-dress-21746-redd-red-236892/ can't remember if you said you liked or hated velvet now I'm posting

I love that but it’s cotton & quite low cut - won’t I freeze in winter?

If you love it, just buy it anyway (in the sale to ease any guilt!) & save it for next summer! Definitely not right for a winter wedding - too ditsy a print, too summery - but a lovely dress.

I’m not keen on velvet but what do you think of this?

https://shopannastore.com/products/rixo-amari-dress-in-bronze

That one could be good - but definitely needs tried on as it could be too clingy. The style looks quite good for your height & proportions, but it needs to be an excellent cut.

EleanorMc67 · 11/11/2025 01:29

I absolutely love the colour, but silk dupion is quite a stiff thinnish silk that tends to crease/crumple rather than flow. And I think that's clear in the back view, as it just doesn't seem to fit very well around the model's hips - plus the tie back looks casual & day-time (& a bit dated?). However, it could be fabulous on ... deserves a try?

Now worried I need something structured!
over budget but what do you all think of this?

I know royal blue was everywhere for a while, but I think it's quite a difficult colour unless you have very dramatic colouring (eg black hair & dark/black/white skin, or flaming auburn hair & pale freckled skin). This dress is a really intense royal blue & might wear you rather than you wear it?

I didn't think I would be seen dead in velvet, but this turned out to be incredibly flattering on. DH said I looked sexy, and he never says that!

Ophelia Velvet Bias Cut Maxi Dress with Ruching Detail - Dark Green

I've admired that dress before, & it's also lovely in the deep red version. I don't like the thought of swelling David Cameron's coffers any further though - even if it is via his wife! Last chance to buy though as she's closing it down after this season ...

EleanorMc67 · 11/11/2025 01:53

This would be one of my top picks - it would be maxi on you, but still fine I think?

This Lisou one could be lovely ... but the high neckline could be a bit too much as you're petite?

I also LOVE a kaftan ...!!! No strained waistband after pudding!!

This one is giving Vampire's Wife vibes if you hate the velvet:

Irina Metallic Shirred Detail Bias Cut Maxi Dress - Dark Green

That is gorgeous. Definitely the best dress so far.

EleanorMc67 · 11/11/2025 02:21

Ooops - wrong photo there - this is the Lisou kaftan. A little bit 70s, & a little bit Tina Chow in vintage Fortuny.

Would you consider vintage? Some beautifully cut pieces out there - usually in much nicer fabrics than today's - & if accessorised with contemporary pieces they will look modern.

This is dramatic.

Brown or green velvet would be charming.

EleanorMc67 · 11/11/2025 03:29

60s silk brocade dresses can look really modern - like this one here. I know this is black & gold, but they also come in coppers, golds, greens, oranges ... lots on Etsy/eBay etc in various lengths. And this sort of fabric is good for winter evening/wedding wear as it catches the light subtly.
