I bought my GHD straighteners in 2012 … Do they become less effective with time? I can’t remember how good they were when I first bought them but they definitely function

should I buy a new pair in Black Friday sale?

Mine are from 2007 🫣. I considered buying new ones, but I've been put off by people saying they're rubbish now!

clinellwipe · 07/11/2025 18:22

Oh wow you win 🤣 I haven’t read any recent reviews I just assumed they were still the gold standard. What’s popular these days?

Mine are the original ones from long before 2012 (can't remember when) and they're still amazing. I saw a while ago they were doing a trade in offer for new ones but read reviews and found that, as with most things, the newer ones are nowhere near as good as the original. Mentioned to my hairdresser and he agreed and said he would never get rid of an original pair and has never had one fail/break/wear out so far

MrsPatrickDempsey · 07/11/2025 18:25

Mine were purchased in 2009. I thought they were ok until I tried my daughter’s new ones. That was probably 3 years ago and I upgraded to the platinums. Really saw the difference.

waitingtogo · 07/11/2025 18:30

I had the wide plate ones since 2010 and still ( I thought ) in great working g order . I was tempted by the recent £100 trade in and ordered the wide plate chronos … I love them . Made me realise how bad my previous were.

my very thick wavy hair is super smooth and swishy and the condition of my hair much improved as I only have to run them through once … so much quicker straightening my long hair .

Mine too, I remember having a really long think about whether or not it was a good use of some of my bonus and now they’re old enough to drink legally 😂

SPSN · 07/11/2025 18:34

I've just replaced my ghd's from 2013 with the new Chronos ghd's. It's night and day how smooth my hair turns out now. I don't know if mine just weren't working as efficiently being so old or if they new model are better. I've also seen people saying the new ones aren't as good but I've not found that at all.

MaryGreenhill · 07/11/2025 18:35

Mine are from 2010. Still brilliant.

Pinkclarko · 07/11/2025 18:36

mine are from 2004 and they went around the world with me that year (don’t know why I thought I needed to take them backpacking but hey). Still work!

Iocanepowder · 07/11/2025 18:37

yep mine are also still from 2007!

i also read they aren’t as good and everyone talks about cloud nines now. So no idea!

Haha love it 🤣🤣.

Tempted by some of the descriptions on this thread though!

EstherGreenwood63 · 07/11/2025 18:38

I got mine when they came out so around 2001/2. Still work perfectly. Don't use them much though tbf. They were definitely built to last.

Because you could only have Very Straight Hair in the 00s 😂

MoominMai · 07/11/2025 18:53

Mine are from 2004 - insane to think I’ve had them since I was 31 and I’m 52 now! They still work perfectly. I have very thin and fine hair so never needed to upgrade 🙂.

Me three! 2007 must have been peak GHD!

Ineedanewsofa · 07/11/2025 18:58

Mine from 2003 still work - have replaced the fuse in the plug a couple of times but that’s it! I did buy new ones in 2019 so use those (when I bother to do anything with my hair!) and they do a better job but the build quality is nowhere near as good and they don’t get as hot

Iwilldoitnowinaminutemam · 07/11/2025 19:01

I bought mine whilst pregnant with DD in 2005! They are still going strong. I have bought some others over the years but still go back to using them as they just give a better result

ChickalettasGiblets · 07/11/2025 19:05

Think mine must be from the early 00s!!! Still work, though I do wonder if my hair would look less frizzy if I had newer ones

allwalkedout · 07/11/2025 19:06

Mine were from 2002 and I’ve only just replaced them this year with a pair from their standard range and so far they’ve been okay. I quite like the addition of automatic turn off after 30 mins. My hair looks just the same as with my old ones. Though I do miss my old ones a they had become like a faithful old friend. I was very sad even we parted.

RubieChewsDay · 07/11/2025 19:17

@allwalkedout my 2007 edition have the 30 min switch off feature, you must have just missed out on getting that one!!

Pricelessadvice · 07/11/2025 19:20

I got mine in 2005 😂

ADHDHDHDHD · 07/11/2025 19:20

Mine are from 2005 I think. Christmas present from my then boyfriend now husband. Still work perfectly. Best present ever.
in my life there is pre-GHD and post-GHD. Best ever named company, only way to have a good hair day! (Pre the Dyson airstraight and airwrap)

ADHDHDHDHD · 07/11/2025 19:20

No switch off feature and no hologram on mine

DanishPastry45 · 07/11/2025 19:20

Mine are from 2004-5 (I think) - still going strong although they don't get much love these days.
