My GHD straighteners are 13 yrs old

I bought my GHD straighteners in 2012 … Do they become less effective with time? I can’t remember how good they were when I first bought them but they definitely function

should I buy a new pair in Black Friday sale?

Bought mine from Aus in 2003! Still work just as well.

unsync · 07/11/2025 19:26

I think mine are originals too, I can't even remember when I had long hair. I keep thinking about getting rid of them, but they're great for ironing cuffs, collars and plackets.

champagneplanet · 07/11/2025 19:27

Bought my first pair in approx 2005, they died about 2 years ago. The new ones are nowhere near as good, should have bought Cloud 9s instead. Might treat myself and give GHDs to DD.

beansontoast85 · 07/11/2025 19:29

I got mine for my 18th birthday and I’m now 40! They’re 22 years old and still going strong. Obviously one of very few things that were built to last!

HansHolbein · 07/11/2025 19:37

The original GHD’s were beasts weren’t they! My new ones just aren’t the same. At all.

user2848502016 · 07/11/2025 19:37

Mine are older and still work well, and I have thick wavy hair so I need a good pair of straighteners

cadburyegg · 07/11/2025 19:43

They are amazing! I replaced mine in 2023 and worked out I’d got them in 2006!

pkt3chgirl · 07/11/2025 19:43

I bought one in 2005 I think. £80 in boots and that was a lot for me. I still use mine. Best present I ever bought myself.

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 07/11/2025 19:44

I got an upgrade last year and they are amazing, but my hair dryer seems to be having a midlife crisis. Does the type of hair dryer really matter if you have ghds?

HelenSkeleton · 07/11/2025 19:46

Keep them, mine are 17 years old and still working well. And I know this is not Pedants' Corner but I'm delighted to see that nobody wrote straightners!

Frannyisreading · 07/11/2025 19:57

Mine are from 2005 i think and they do stop working every now and then, but a man on Ebay fixes them! I've also heard the new ones are rubbish so I'll hang onto these as long as possible

FlutteryButterfly · 07/11/2025 20:04

I thought I'd won.... but alas mine are only 20 years old.

AngelofIslington · 07/11/2025 20:07

I got mine in about 2004. They were brilliant, lasted probably in excess of 10 years. The new ghd’s I bought probably only lasted a couple of years, nowhere near as good.
i then got cloud 9’s which are really good.
I won a shark 5-1 with a wet-dry straightener, it really damaged my hair so I’m back to the cloud 9’s

RabbitsEatPancakes · 07/11/2025 20:08

Got mine in about 2005 and got new ones in 2014 to keep in different locations
Both still work and I think the old ones are still better but not quite as smooth anymore.

If I wanted new GHDs I'd go for cloud 9 as that's the guy who made the original GHDs.

Compsearch · 07/11/2025 20:16

I got mine in 2003 - saved up all birthday and Christmas money as a 15 year old and they’re still serving me well at 38 - absolutely worth it and probably my best ever buy!

clinellwipe · 07/11/2025 21:05

I’m so glad I made this thread as you’ve all saved me a lot of money! I’ll keep my old faithful GHDs

Mine are from about 2007. They are still going strong!

I've heard about Cloud Nine, but ultimately, my old ones work fine, so I'm not bothering.

DareDevil223 · 07/11/2025 21:28

I can't remember how old my GHDs were, at least 10 years but they died yesterday. I had just replaced them with the Cloud Nine Contour wide iron (I mostly use them for curling not straightening) and they are excellent.

Kisshygge · 07/11/2025 21:54

Mine are 2010 😂

Whatisityoucantface · 07/11/2025 22:35

Mine ghds are at least 15 yrs old and work fine but I’m not sure they’re as good as they used to be.
Only today I was looking at the ghd website and also at cloud nine… there are so many options I just got a bit overwhelmed and stopped looking. This thread is very well timed, but can’t seem to understand if I should upgrade based on responses

Yes!!! Me too...
😅😅😅

RedWineIsFine · 07/11/2025 22:41

Also in the 2007 club, they were repaired once a few years ago but when they broke again this year I replaced with cloud nines - which are amazing. I'm an every day user so the GHDs were a workhorse till the day they died.

CausalInference · 07/11/2025 22:47

Mine are from 2009, they are my second pair (got my first pair in 2004), the first pair I took backpacking for a 18 months and I wound the cord around them shoving them in my rucksack so the black casing of the wire came away, when I moved back home my mum cut the wire off when I was out because she said they weren't safe 🤣 I was fuming at the time.

They don't get much action these days, I can go months not using them, I used them everyday without fail for over a decade! The plates do go on them, I used my sisters a while ago, she's never been that into them so they haven't been used anywhere near as much as mine, they glide over your hair much better. Hers also time out if you leave them on, mine are too old for that feature! Number of times I've left the house and thought omg did I turn them off?!

TartanMammy · 07/11/2025 23:07

I have a pair from 2006 that still work perfectly.

I upgraded them to the ghd chronos last year and honestly they are no better or worse.

lashy · 07/11/2025 23:09

I got mine for my 30th birthday and I celebrated my, ahem, 50th a few days ago.
Still working perfectly well.
