"casual Christmas sparkle" work party dress code

Doublebubblegum · 02/11/2025 23:33

Please help me find something suitable! Work do in a bar in central London. Dress code is casual Christmas sparkle whatever the hell that means.

I do normally love dressing up for a party but on the flip side sort of relieved I don't need to be on the hunt for a new party dress. I think most colleagues will be pretty casual. Any suggestions of what to wear? I'd like to feel like I've made a bit of an effort, without looking out of place.

If you can have a look in Oliver Bnas or on their Wes site. Last year I got a sparkly t-shirt that was reasonably priced but it looked really elegant and went with jeans and some wedge heels and I did a smoky eye.

Janie934 · 06/11/2025 21:33

Sosandar have some really nice sparkly jumpers. I love the bow jumper but there's also one with an icicle as well as some with sequins.

Another idea is to buy sparkly black tights – again from Marks & Spencer although I'm sure loads of other shops have them – and pair with your usual work skirt suit.

Sparkly black tights are a good alternative to the black jeans/sparkle top or embellish/metallic jeans/ black top, but I would think that a simple black dress is probably better than the skirt from your work suit. What would you plan to wear on top?

RowNine · 07/11/2025 07:42

I'd pair this silver skirt with a black sweater (ideally cashmere - Uniqlo have good value ones). Nails this seasons lace trend and not the usual sequins/jeans which can be ageing if not done carefully.

That’s nice, but I never know what shoes to pair with this kind of skirt. I feel like open toe heels are too cold!!

Rina66 · 07/11/2025 08:37

I’d wear knee high mid heel suede boots with the satin skirt or velvet bow sling backs depending on how dressy I wanted to look

Jeans and a sparkly top or if sparkle isn't your thing a plain top with a sparkly accessory.

AlphaApple · 07/11/2025 09:52

I would go with a glam top and bling accessories.

I was staying in a hotel last December and there was a party on, so I watched the guests arrive. Every single woman over 50 was wearing a version of a sequined dress or black trousers and a sparkly top. Individually, they looked fine but in a group it looked like they were dressed for a Daily Mail Femail photo shoot...

housethatbuiltme · 07/11/2025 10:45

I have a top kind of like this, would pair it with skinny jeans (I have some black glitter-y ones which would be first choice but any would do) and flat/low heeled boots and for me a fitted blazer (most people probably wouldn't need a blazer if indoors but I like my arms covered).

Dressy Casual to me means nice jeans/trousers and a pretty top and comfortable boots/shoes. Something with a touch of 'glitz' but that you can move around comfortably in but could also be thrown on as easy as trousers and a t-shirt. 'Casual' literally means 'relaxed and easy', once you start getting into dresses, skirts, shorts (in winter where they are not temperature appropriate or need layering) and stiletto heels etc... things don't feel all that casual anymore and start too look 'fussy' and 'overdressed'.

Oh thanks for the suggestions. Do they work with this kind of skirt? I would have to try it to see how it would look on me! It’s the kind of look I feel would work better on someone else rather than me 😅 xx

What jeans to wear with a sparkly top? In my head that's a look to pair with skinnies, but I only own quite casual jeans these days (barrel leg or wide leg)

A sequin or silk and lace cami will look good with either of those jeans

sansou · 07/11/2025 17:47

More subtle glittery thin knits. H&M do these well -dusky pink and khaki. I own 2 summer sale versions in cream and grey which i bought at half price

TwistedKeys · 07/11/2025 18:15

I have just ordered these shimmering jeans from H&M and if they aren’t absolutely fabulous, I will cry.

Black jeans & a sparkly top

Was going to suggest the same!

NigelForage · 08/11/2025 07:51

get onto vinted,.
Sparkle the part of your body you are most content with.
Good legs- sparkly bottom half etc

DO NOT BUY NEW - there is so much on vinted !

NigelForage · 08/11/2025 07:53

I have to say I don't like any of these low heels'
Do trainers or proper heels

Tesco has some gorgeous stuff for Christmas. I'm still sulking because I couldn't afford (and have nowhere it) a red satin blouse

the burgundy sequin shorts are dreamy

Mauvehoodie · 08/11/2025 09:35

sansou · 05/11/2025 17:21

Tesco F&F Sequin Jacket is 25% off making it under £25. Also in Burgundy. I was tempted not that I need any more sparkly tops since I have collected quite a few Jan Sale bargains over the years. It's cropped and you need to wear a camisole type vest underneath it.

I was going to suggest this, Ive seen it on a fb reel and looked nice. It’d look lovely with jeans. They also had matching shorts which I was thinking of buying to wear with tights on Christmas Day (with a plain top rather than the jacket!), I think they were £22.50 but I can’t find them online.

Rina66 · 08/11/2025 11:54

The shorts, we’ve been talking about them on another thread!

FastTurtle · 08/11/2025 16:32

I would wear my silver mini skirt, ankle boots and a thin jumper or my slightly sparkly puff sleeve sweatshirt with trousers or a short skirt.

Rina66 · 03/11/2025 06:57

I also saw someone with this on with jeans on Friday evening and it looked really good…subtle but still sparkly, I couldn’t believe it was £20

I love this but it’s not available anywhere near me, why can’t you buy it online?!

PeonyPatch · 09/11/2025 01:13

I am currently lusting after a pair of sequin leopard print trousers in Zara… says “coming soon” currently! I’d wear with a simple black top and let the trousers do the talking!
