Soft waist trousers - that aren't awful

Tiredofbeingsotired · 02/11/2025 19:47

I'm having some gynae issues that mean I bloat terribly during the day. I'm a size 18, but by the end of the day my tummy is so bloated I can't bear anything touching it.

I a children and youth worker so I tend to wear trousers - I'm an older one though so don't go too heavy on the dungarees - Is there anywhere I can find any non dreadful soft waist jeans/ trousers that won't make me feel like I need to rip them off my body?

Thanks in advance

I was going to recommend an M&S and a Next pair already mentioned above!

I previously had some good quality yoga pants that looked very smart but with a blissfully wide and soft waistband. Wore to work with smart top and looked good. Can’t remember the make but there are lots similar.

@GloriaMonday not if you style them properly, but each to their own

piscofrisco · 04/11/2025 18:30

Halara stretch waist trousers. I used to work in an office and had 4 pairs in different colours. Comfy as pyjamas, but looked smart, washed well and with just the right amount of stretch

Halara fans - what's the inside leg like? They look strangely short in some of the online pictures but maybe that's just the style.

I’m 5.5 and they are a tiny bit long on me.

OneOliveDuck · 04/11/2025 18:39

These are beanutiful. I have been wearing for years. They come in regular petite and long. I have in all colours and sizes. They wash really well

Laboheme78 · 04/11/2025 18:41

I don’t know how big they go, but Varley wide leg double soft trousers are smart ish and amazing. I have them in black and absolutely love them.

oldmoaner · 04/11/2025 18:42

When I was 11 I was totally crap at everything at school, once I got interested I did very well, didn't go to University but went to college, got a really good job. I don't think at 11 you can tell how a child is going to do in 5 + years time, I think your MIL is stupid and wrong in saying things like that, and imagine she has her "favourites" tell your daughter to ignore her, she's old fashioned and dosn't know what she's talking about.

PrincessofWells · 04/11/2025 18:43

Toast have nice cords with an elasticated waist £145. I'm a 14 and take M. An XL should fit you nicely with lots of room.

PrincessofWells · 04/11/2025 18:44

@oldmoaner I think you may have posted on the wrong thread 😃

DoraSpenlow · 04/11/2025 18:46

Another vote for Cotton Traders mentioned above. I always swore I would never wear elasticated waists but these are so comfortable and don't look like an elasticated waist. I hate those ones that look like a bum in a bag.

Halara jeans are fabulous. They look like jeans but are so so comfortable, like joggers with a comfy waistband.

Edited

Do you have to buy these online?

Maybe not with a white jacket then. Smile

Halara are great.
If you want smart, they do stretchy 'work trousers'. Also jeans and lots of other styles
Plenty of stretch and variety of leg lengths

Agree. I wear the waffle (?) fabric ones for work regularly, I have them in black and grey and they've seen me through belly 'changes'. You can find them new without tags via eBay resellers for £17.99, nearly all colours and sizes. They have pockets too!

ThatGreenFawn · 04/11/2025 20:11

The asda yoga trousers are very comfy, reasonably smart looking with lots of stretch.

Ivesaidenough · 04/11/2025 21:03

I have the M&S ones, bought in a panic for travelling. They are very short. I'm only 5'6 and they are flapping up around my ankles, that's the regular length.
I would return them if I hadn't had to wear them all week. I also had to size up to a 14 (usually a 12) and the waistband is still a bit tight.
Disappointed as I'd read so many great reviews!

I don't know what length the trousers are but mine are perfect length for regular length and I'm 5'5"and a half

I love the Cider wide legged trousers (Cider high rise wide legged elastic waist trousers)- the waist is really comfortable and stetches a lot and they have really deep pockets on both sides. They also do them in regular sizes and plus sizes - I've put weight on recently and have found the halara ones I ordered don't really fit, whereas the Cider ones are great and really comfy as well as washing really well. Lots of colours in regular sizes, not quite as many in the pjus sizes but they are a bargain at about £10-£15 a pair. And they were even cheaper with big discounts offered today it seems so worth keeping an eye on!

I have 3 pairs of these trousers in black (had to stalk the site as they are popular especially for the price) I wear them everywhere/to work etc.

Edited

How tall are you both, what is the inside leg and do they have much stretch please? i am an 18 on the hips but my tummy is definitely a 20.

I wouldn't recommend wide legged trousers if you walk to work or station, the cold air rushes right up your legs. Tapered trousers in a warm jersey material keep the cold out.

I wear knee high socks with lighter trousers in winter and that helps with this problem. Primark sell plain black long socks that stay up and are great for added warmth!

ThatsNotAKnife · 05/11/2025 07:53

Watch out with palazzo trousers as they can be a nasty trip hazard on the stairs unless they're cropped. I've literally just cleared mine out as I had a couple of close calls at work.

Northerndoglover · 05/11/2025 12:14

I have 3 pairs of the black marks Goodmove harem pants. I went through a similar phase and tried all the marks wide leg ones (that everyone raves about) but tbh the waistbands were still too constricting. These can be dressed up with a smart T/jumper and smart trainers. They are heaven.

My mum (who’s had abdominal surgery) also ended up with these on days she doesn’t wear her WS dungarees.

The waistband on these trousers is considerably wider than the others I tried which made it a) softer and b) easier on the tummy area.
