Soft waist trousers - that aren't awful

Tiredofbeingsotired · 02/11/2025 19:47

I'm having some gynae issues that mean I bloat terribly during the day. I'm a size 18, but by the end of the day my tummy is so bloated I can't bear anything touching it.

I a children and youth worker so I tend to wear trousers - I'm an older one though so don't go too heavy on the dungarees - Is there anywhere I can find any non dreadful soft waist jeans/ trousers that won't make me feel like I need to rip them off my body?

Thanks in advance

M&S do fantastic elastic waistband denim/jersey trousers with pockets. They’re a bit warmer & cosier than the jersey trousers and are perfect for me WFH. I’ve also worn them into the office on occasion.

I purchased mine last year and found they came up slightly big and long. The straight leg version are quite wide legged as well.

Totally agree re Halara.
So comfortable and very good quality.
I wear the black ones as work trousers (HCP) so they are washed daily at 60degrees, despite this there has been no fading or shrinking.
Added bonus that they somehow make my bum look fabulous and skin over any lumpy bits, obviously this is kept covered by a tunic for work, but definitely good enough to wear outside of work too. In fact I flew long distance in them 🥰

Cakeandusername · 03/11/2025 11:41

I have some next black wide leg joggers that are quite smart.

Denim Elasticated Waist Wide Leg Trousers | M&S | M&S

If you like wide leg - I wear have these in black. They are a mid-weight fabric. I got the slightly larger size so they never dig in and cope with the variations in stomach size throughout the day! I can wear them with trainers or boots, smart or casual. They are flat fronted but elastic at the back.

I recently got some wide leg black ponte trousers from Tu. Super comfortable and at 25% off they were about £12. Perfect for work if you want to buy a couple of pairs and not break the bank.

Look a5 Saint & Sofia. I got so,e simple black ones with zip pockets, that look quite dressy. Very comfy.

Love Saint & Sofia. Their stuff lasts forever too.

I have the wide leg version of these in black and brown. Absolute bargain at £19.50 although I believe you have to be a bit careful at washing them as they tend to shrink (mine haven't - cool wash/gentle spin and dry on beated airer). They are very comfortable but look smart.

Came here to recommend these. My navy ones get worn on repeat! I have IBS and find them fine on bad days.

Keepoffmyartichokes · 03/11/2025 15:55

I've just ordered these from Next, I can't seem to send a link from the app so apologies. I'm hoping they will be soft, warm and comfy. In reality I will probably look like Rupert the bear 🐻

The entire “belly” bit is flat and stretchy, so no digging in. Really flattering width of leg too I find - wide, but not TOO wide. Come up large and long, but maybe that gives bloating room!

Halara fans - what's the inside leg like? They look strangely short in some of the online pictures but maybe that's just the style.

GloriaMonday · 04/11/2025 09:57

Not sure what you mean by 'older' but my mother persuaded me (50 something) to get trousers from Robell.
If your budget is tight, try M&S or Tu at Sainsburys.

MissFizzyPop · 04/11/2025 11:17

I bought these yesterday and they are so comfortable. They also come in different colours too.

I have these brushed jersey wide leg trousers from Uniqlo. Super soft and comfy at the waist. https://www.uniqlo.com/uk/en/products/E479285-000/00?colorDisplayCode=69&sizeDisplayCode=003

Snag wide legged leggings. They have a wide, stretch waistband and pockets. Font look like leggings, but work like them.
I teach in an SEND setting and wear these as smarter but super flexible daily wear.

Another vote for Snag, I have both the wide leg and the kick-flare leggings and they are sooo confortable. Don't be fooled by the name 'leggings', they are proper trousers.

nomas · 04/11/2025 12:54

I wouldn't recommend wide legged trousers if you walk to work or station, the cold air rushes right up your legs. Tapered trousers in a warm jersey material keep the cold out.

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 04/11/2025 13:42

I have these from Zara in burgundy and cream. Love them and they are smart enough with the right top and jacket.

I have similar issues and basically live in Lucy and Yak Alexa trousers - they do them in normal colours. Also have the added benefit of being cotton so if you prefer natural fabrics they are also a good choice.

Bedroomdilemmas113 · 04/11/2025 14:08

Oliver Bonas - love them!

FeyreandRhysand · 04/11/2025 14:09

I second the brushed cotton barrel leg trousers as recommended by @Cheesecrunch mine arrived yesterday and are so comfy. I think you need to be careful and make sure your top half is smart to pull them off for work, and I’d recommend the black over the blue, I ordered both but the blue are verging on PJs so they’re going back.

I was just thinking how great they’ll be for my worst period days at work as the waistband won’t dig in at all.

For reference, I didn’t need to size up but did go for petite (5ft 2)

GloriaMonday · 04/11/2025 14:45

Thanks for the link but they look like chef's trousers.

The M+S straight legged heavy jersey ones, they have a flat soft waistband.
If they also came with pockets they would be perfect.
I’ve got navy, black and dark check pairs, wish they’d do a camel or taupe pair too.

I was coming on to recommend M&S, I have IBS and can bloat up suddenly at any time, so I can’t really bear zips anymore. I’ve bought two pairs of heavyweight jersey trousers from M&S in the last couple of weeks, they are fab and look more expensive than they are. I got a denim look pair for £30 and a Navy pair for £28.

Snag (the tights company) lovely wide waist band soft enough too
