Fell for hard sell at Charlotte Tilbury…

and feeling a bit like I’ve been robbed.
I never normally make impulse purchases.

I just wanted a bronzer or some sort of glowy powder and a lip tint to look a bit less corpse like.

I asked for advice and explained that I only normally use soap and spf. Somehow ended up with layers of stuff - a cream, a primer, some sort of shiny stick thing. Lip liner and lip balm. I did look better tbf but would never use all this. I asked if the cream was comedogenic and she said no. She was forceful and made me feel rather stupid (ridiculous I’m nearly 50!). Ended up buying the magic cream, magic lip balm and lip liner. £78, I feel robbed!!

Then came home and read reviews…. apparently the cream is comedogenic (glycerol styerate?). The lip balm- £28, but I already have lanolips which I love!! All unopened - should I just return? Is it actually worth it? Are there cheaper alternatives? I didn’t even get the bronzer which made the most difference!!

Return! I've been dazzled by the Charlotte Tilbury hard sell before, it's a tough one to resist.

If it's any consolation I found their bronzer terribly chalky.

Hard recommend drunk elephant bronzing drops, it's wonderful!

SheWantsToBeMe · 31/10/2025 08:47

If unopened just return them.

researchers3 · 31/10/2025 08:49

I don't use it, but yes, if you don't want it, take it back and get the bronzer instead!

WildCherryBlossom · 31/10/2025 08:49

I can’t comment on Charlotte Tilbury, but I would thoroughly recommend Maybelline City Bronzer (£8:99 in Boots and Superdrug). It doesn’t go on too heavily (I had a Mac one that did) and it gives a healthy subtle sheen but it’s not sparkly like some)

Sandyshandy · 31/10/2025 09:32

Thank you. I think I will return - my skin felt slightly sticky and greasy for the rest of the day.
Any recommendations for how to achieve the glowy ‘finished’ look with just one product?

I second the drunk elephant bronzing drops for a glowy look, just mix a few drops in with your moisturiser

NorthFaceofthelaundrypile · 31/10/2025 09:35

I Love the Chanel cream bronzer in a big tub. It’s spendy - wait until it’s on offer somewhere. But you will get change from what you spent on the Charlotte Tilbury!
But it gives skin a lovely glowy finish, that’s not sparkly and the tub lasts forever!

It’s so sticky and greasy. I haven’t suffered with blemishes since I was a teenager but any CT products break me out - skincare or face make-up. I’m a skincare and makeup magpie and use lists of different brands. No other brand breaks me out like this.

AgentPidge · 31/10/2025 09:46

Yes, return it. It's all hard advertising.

I wouldn't use soap on my face though - I've found a Lush wash-off thing called Aqua Marina to be very gentle. I use cheapo Palmers cocoa butter for moisturising.

QuickNameChange22 · 31/10/2025 09:47

Return them if you can.

I know a lot of people love Charlotte Tilbury, but I've never found a product from them that I thought was any good.

Bought an eyeshadow quad, didn't last any longer than a cheaper eyeshadow. Bought a double ended eyeliner at the same time, it has dried up and I can't use it as it drags my eyelids and doesn't deposit any colour. Bought a 4 pack of mini lipsticks (which included Pillow Talk which so many people seem obsessed with) They all went on SO patchy (and the colours looked awful, but that's not their fault, they just didn't suit me!)

KathyDuck · 31/10/2025 09:48

Pretty packaging, poor quality.

Noshadelamp · 31/10/2025 09:52

There are CT dupes in boots and superdrug, worth trying to see if you like that sort of product.
Revolution do a magic cream dupe.

SideshowItchy · 31/10/2025 09:56

for anyone like me that didnt know

Comedogenic refers to substances that are likely to clog pores and can lead to the formation of blackheads or acne. Products labeled as comedogenic may not be suitable for those with oily or acne-prone skin

User312312 · 31/10/2025 10:05

I do think some of their make up is good, esp lip products (eye shadows nothing special imho) but the creams did nothing for me, and I’d return on the principle that they’ve over sold you and that’s not right.

lindyloo57 · 31/10/2025 10:06

I would return if you can , I haven't brought anything from the range but suspect it's all hipe up. The same with trinny London, stick with brands that have been around for years, they have much more experience than these new brands that keep appearing so much choice in boots or superdrug.

weareallcats · 31/10/2025 10:19

I don’t like CT magic cream at all - my skin really reacted to it.

I also use the Drunk Elephant drops but in gold - I love them and they last for ages.

And yes, return, and tell them that you felt bullied into buying. I loathe the hard sell - if a product is any good then it sells itself.

Sandyshandy · 31/10/2025 10:21

Thank you, wise ones, I will return them and mention the hard selling. Still cross with myself - I felt almost sick when I got home.

She was certainly a good saleswoman, but I don’t like those tactics.

User312312 · 31/10/2025 10:23

I’d be tempted to contact CT customer service directly and get them to give you a returns label if you don’t fancy doing it face to face

Tartantotty · 31/10/2025 10:25

Not a fan of CT. She's massively over-hyped but some of her products are overpriced and inadequate. You pay for the packaging.

Message: avoid hard sell - desperation tells you something,

Sandyshandy · 31/10/2025 10:26

I’m going to use the money on the Chanel bronzer (just remembered I tried it before and liked it but too £££), I’d like to tell them in person. Might email John Lewis hq too.

I had a good experience at Space NK, they have plenty of good quality brands there and the staff I spoke with were v helpful. I got a good serum for under my moisturizer which I think helped with ‘glow’.

Buy online. You are not badgered by a shop assistant and only buy what you need.

The Chanel bronzer is £50 which is more than Charlotte tilbury. It does last forever tho
