Fell for hard sell at Charlotte Tilbury…

and feeling a bit like I’ve been robbed.
I never normally make impulse purchases.

I just wanted a bronzer or some sort of glowy powder and a lip tint to look a bit less corpse like.

I asked for advice and explained that I only normally use soap and spf. Somehow ended up with layers of stuff - a cream, a primer, some sort of shiny stick thing. Lip liner and lip balm. I did look better tbf but would never use all this. I asked if the cream was comedogenic and she said no. She was forceful and made me feel rather stupid (ridiculous I’m nearly 50!). Ended up buying the magic cream, magic lip balm and lip liner. £78, I feel robbed!!

Then came home and read reviews…. apparently the cream is comedogenic (glycerol styerate?). The lip balm- £28, but I already have lanolips which I love!! All unopened - should I just return? Is it actually worth it? Are there cheaper alternatives? I didn’t even get the bronzer which made the most difference!!

That’s a shame, I hate a hard sell too! I do like CT make up though (not skincare), but buy online after doing my own research.

deeahgwitch · 31/10/2025 11:02

I too love the Chanel cream bronzer. There are loads of dupes too.
I don’t like the choice of colours in the CT bronzers range. None of them suited me.

JMAngel1 · 31/10/2025 11:13

Trying to work out how you all 3 for £78. Were they minis?

dollyblue01 · 31/10/2025 11:13

I don’t like their stuff in my skin , did try a few bits but found it’s not worth the price and there are better alternatives for cheaper.

deeahgwitch · 31/10/2025 11:21

I hate the CT ads with her and her fake “darlings”
🤮🤮🤮

Worldgonecrazy · 31/10/2025 11:27

I like the CT stuff I have bought. The problem is that the women working in the counters have very high sales targets, so need to hard sell /up sell. They will lie about the products to get you to buy, and if they are having a tough sales week, can be quite grumpy and rude to customers they think are not going to contribute much to sales.

Trinny has been a let down - I bought a tube of under eye stuff and it’s only lasted 3 weeks. Nice product but overpriced.

Thanks for the Chanel bronzer tip.

InSpainTheRain · 31/10/2025 11:27

Definitely return! Get a full refund not a credit note.

Uricon2 · 31/10/2025 11:33

The so called Magic Cream is without a doubt the worst moisturiser I've ever used and I don't have "fussy" skin. It was a small pot as part of a Christmas set and I was also underwhelmed by the bronzer/highlighter and lipstick. They had lovely cases but contents not so great.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 31/10/2025 11:36

My rule of thumb for make up is to say I want to see how it wears before buying any of it. I've had foundation oxidise before now.

MoveAlongNowDear · 31/10/2025 11:45

I think CT make up is all hype. I bought an eye crayon that was dreadful. It was rock hard and dragged across my skin. The colour pay off was minimal and then it creased after half an hour.
I don't like her lipsticks either. Nice packaging rubbish contents.

Cherrytree86 · 31/10/2025 11:49

Sandyshandy · 31/10/2025 09:32

Thank you. I think I will return - my skin felt slightly sticky and greasy for the rest of the day.
Any recommendations for how to achieve the glowy ‘finished’ look with just one product?

@Sandyshandy

no Its impossible.

if you want a polished finished look you need moisturiser, primer, foundation, concealer, bronzer/contour, blush.

you might not wanna do it everyday (though plenty of people do, me included) but when you go out socially perhaps ? It really doesn’t take a long time

CT makeup is brilliant btw

stargirl27 · 31/10/2025 11:51

I can also vouch for the Drunk Elephant bronzing drops. Elf do a good dupe. They also do a good dupe of the CT Hollywood Glow. If you did like the CT Magic Cream, Revolution makes a dupe called Miracle Cream which is exactly the same! I didn't repurchase as I don't like fragrance in my skincare, but if you don't mind this I would give it a go.

A moisturiser that I use which makes me very glowy is the COSRX snail mucin moisturiser (although I appreciate snail mucin not for everyone).

Cakeandusername · 31/10/2025 11:56

Dodging trend of replies I love Charlotte Tilbury magic cream and I’m 50. Think I’m on 4th lot.
I also use the 90s pink lipstick and liner.
But if you don’t like I’d try and return. I always say I’m ok and don’t need help so not had hard sell.

AnotherNaCha · 31/10/2025 11:57

I really don’t rate CT products - apart maybe from the eyeshadow. And I’ve tried loads and loads

Cakeandusername · 31/10/2025 12:03

I also tried the elf flawless filter dupe but don’t rate it as much as the CT one. I don’t wear much makeup but use it for a glow. All skin is different you need to find what suits you.

theresnolimits · 31/10/2025 12:03

Going against the grain here, I really like CT. The Magic Cream suits my skin (very rich on my dry skin), I love the lipstick colours and the eye cream shades and they both last for ever.

Which just goes to show we’re all different. But you should never feel that pressurised.

PerkyCyanPoet · 31/10/2025 12:22

The best product I’ve found for adding colour is the St Moriz Advanced Glow Face Serum, I think it’s meant to be a bit of a dupe for the Drunk Elephant product? Anyway I mix the serum with my normal moisturiser in the morning and it adds a nice amount of “something” so I look more alive. I’ve just googled and ELF and Revolution also have similar products.

I bought Vieve’s Skin Nova the other week which is also good for adding a bit of something, although it’s not as noticeable on the skin as I was hoping for.

I also like the St Tropez facial spray for adding some colour, but that is a proper fake tan so might not be what you’re after.

Ratafia · 31/10/2025 12:35

People advising returning - will the shop necessarily accept it if there is nothing wrong with the goods sold?

Dragonscaledaisy · 31/10/2025 12:37

I love the magic cream and eye rescue. I'm not a fan of the Chanel bronzer but I do love Tom Ford.

OneBadKitty · 31/10/2025 12:44

I find CT products to be good quality, but they are expensive. There are better skincare products out there for less.

If you follow a good skincare regime and moisturise well your skin will glow more naturally. Just washing with soap and applying sunscreen will leave skin dry. Exfoliating once or twice a week with a gentle AHA will help skin look glowy and applying a nice cc cream during the day will even skintone. Also, eyebrows make a big difference to looking polished so shaping and filling in with a pencil will help. I also always wear a nude toned lipstick, mascara and a little blush.

Tryingmybest100 · 31/10/2025 12:47

I second the recommendation for Erborian CC cream. Amazing stuff. Gives a good coverage with a dewy finish - game changer for me.

I also recommend basics by B glow drops for highlighting your cheeks as it gives a subtle glow. I use the shade Marbella and am on my 3rd tube now - its fantastic. Lots of people have commented how good I look recently & I put it down to these 2 products. https://basicsbyb.com.au/products/tulum-marbella-liquid-glow-drops?srsltid=AfmBOopOuRZECGTxDEX3FW3aOOgvlbUepDegsNcYojE3srLJCWoBOFkP&variant=40332946899025

I would return the Charlotte Tilbury products - all hype but crap products in my experience

MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend · 31/10/2025 12:47

I've never understood the Charlotte Tilbury thing, or any fancy makeup (and I wear a full face every day). The extra money is all for packaging and marketing, but Charlotte is such an utterly revolting woman I don't understand why people are taken in by her.

Sorry that is nothing to do with your OP but I just can't stand that woman!

OneBadKitty · 31/10/2025 12:48

Ignore the pushy marketing at CT and choose what you actually like. The lipsticks are great quality if you can find a colour that flatters you and the bronze and glow palette is also great as are the foundations and eyeshadows.

I would avoid the overpriced skincare though. Drunk Elephant, Paulas Choice, Murad or Medil8 are among some great skincare brands to try.

Cupofteawithsugar · 31/10/2025 12:49

CT do sell the Flawless Filter and Wonder glow which might be the kind of product you’d looking for if you want an easy to achieve natural glow? Then add some bronzer over the top.

Lots of brands do similar products though for a fraction of the price. L’Oréal do a lovely one for about £10.

Claire1995 · 31/10/2025 12:51

Sandyshandy · 31/10/2025 10:26

I’m going to use the money on the Chanel bronzer (just remembered I tried it before and liked it but too £££), I’d like to tell them in person. Might email John Lewis hq too.

So you are going to go out of your way to report someone to head office for literally just doing their job?!

I could maybe understand if you couldn't get a refund or an exchange but to exchange it for a product you want and get a refund for the difference and you are still going to report them.
