Fell for hard sell at Charlotte Tilbury…

and feeling a bit like I’ve been robbed.
I never normally make impulse purchases.

I just wanted a bronzer or some sort of glowy powder and a lip tint to look a bit less corpse like.

I asked for advice and explained that I only normally use soap and spf. Somehow ended up with layers of stuff - a cream, a primer, some sort of shiny stick thing. Lip liner and lip balm. I did look better tbf but would never use all this. I asked if the cream was comedogenic and she said no. She was forceful and made me feel rather stupid (ridiculous I’m nearly 50!). Ended up buying the magic cream, magic lip balm and lip liner. £78, I feel robbed!!

Then came home and read reviews…. apparently the cream is comedogenic (glycerol styerate?). The lip balm- £28, but I already have lanolips which I love!! All unopened - should I just return? Is it actually worth it? Are there cheaper alternatives? I didn’t even get the bronzer which made the most difference!!

No, but when I ask for the refund I’ll have to why! I am most annoyed it being told it wasn’t comedogenic when it does actually contain comedogenic ingredients. There’s pushy and there’s pushy!!

People advising returning - will the shop necessarily accept it if there is nothing wrong with the goods sold?

M&S wouldn’t let me return an unopened foundation. They said their policy is no returns on cosmetics.

There is probably no point in complaining either. They are just doing their jobs. They didn’t hold a gun to your head.

smallsilvercloud · 31/10/2025 12:58

I like CT lipsticks and glosses, I will repeat buy these, bronzer is also good.
My skin is too sensitive for the magic cream, the skin oil smells amazing but not sure it really does any better than other skin oils.
the Hollywood flawless filter, you can find loads of dupes for this, Elf have one, plenty of glowy spfs around that give a similar effect.

Onlyinthrees · 31/10/2025 13:10

Magic cream is technically non-comedogenic. The ingredients are all considered to have a low comedogenic rating including Glyceryl stearate.
There are a lot of user reports that it causes breakouts but this does happen sometimes. Loads of Benefit products are technically non/ low comedogenic but they certainly break me out very badly. Breakouts/ congestion can also be caused by the method you use to apply products and other factors. The salesperson was technically right in what she said. I doubt they will accept that as an mis-sell, but they might.
I don’t think they will refund multiple products because you have changed your mind to be honest.

deeahgwitch · 31/10/2025 13:24

Why is she revolting @MrFluffyDogIsMyBestFriend ?

Rosebud987 · 31/10/2025 13:24

Another lover of the Chanel cream bronzer! However the no 7 version is a very good substitute and mines lasted a year so far and I use it every day. Still a few months left. Often have a voucher at no. 7 too for money off!

Borethefuckoff · 31/10/2025 13:26

I hate these makeup counters… find them really intimidating! Just take them back and say you changed your mind!

Thank you. I think I will return - my skin felt slightly sticky and greasy for the rest of the day.
Any recommendations for how to achieve the glowy ‘finished’ look with just one product?

I’ll share with you my best kept secret. It’s MAC tinted strobe cream. It’s basically the strobe cream (gem of a product on its own) with a drop of tint/foundation in and comes in loads of different tones and shades. You can rub it in with your hands like a tinted moisturiser and it doubles as skincare. The glow is gorgeous.

ColdLittleHeart · 31/10/2025 13:45

Return! I only like the airbrush filter from Charlotte Tilbury and only for holiday make up..the rest is absolutely crap.
As previous posters have said, get yourself the drunk elephant bronzing drops and add to your moisturiser. Best thing I’ve used in years!

Eborian cc cream for that dewy look! It’s so natural.

I hate the CT ads with her and her fake “darlings”
🤮🤮🤮

Ha! That's actually how she is in real life, have known CT for around 25 years!

beadystar · 31/10/2025 14:53

I find Charlotte Tilbury quite chalky. Return! I like Tanologist tanning drops from Superdrug. One drop lifts up the pallor without loads of make up.

ttcat37 · 31/10/2025 14:59

Same thing happened to me. Wanted to try out make up for an event and had seen all the hype around CT. So I had a makeover which was free if I spent over a certain amount. Away from the shop lighting I looked like I was wearing drag make up and by the time I got home it had literally slid off my face and my face felt like an oil slick. I took it all back to a different shop.

louderthan · 31/10/2025 15:27

I also recommend Erborian! I use the CC cream with green tint to neutralise redness. Quite often I don't bother with a foundation as well and just use concealer and a pressed powder throughout the day; I only ever do 'full' makeup for a night out (I am lazy!)

kerstina · 31/10/2025 16:07

I liked the CT magic water cream . I did feel it made my skin dewy for a while. Didn’t need separate primer etc.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 31/10/2025 16:16

CT are the queens of upselling. I'd love them as employees but you have to be very determined as a customer. I've returned sealed products to them before and had a refund, no problem.

I agree with people saying the products aren't great. The eye pencils dry out almost over night. Magic Cream is sticky and smells very strong. The lipsticks are dry. The only thing I've ever repeat purchased is the Sheer Glow Tint foundation which really suits my skin.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 31/10/2025 16:20

Elf halo glow is good. A lot of their stuff is actually and very reasonable. Pair with some rose hip oil from the ordinary (serum at night).

naemates · 31/10/2025 16:21

Claire1995 · 31/10/2025 12:51

So you are going to go out of your way to report someone to head office for literally just doing their job?!

I could maybe understand if you couldn't get a refund or an exchange but to exchange it for a product you want and get a refund for the difference and you are still going to report them.

It’s not reporting someone for doing their job, it’s letting the company know that their practices aren’t being well received. If they get a lot of complaints, maybe they’ll tell their staff to chill a bit and stop with the upselling to try and get more repeat business. Maybe they’ll decide that one off overselling is the tactic for them 🤷🏻‍♀️. But it’s fine to let them know

MoveAlongNowDear · 31/10/2025 11:45

I think CT make up is all hype. I bought an eye crayon that was dreadful. It was rock hard and dragged across my skin. The colour pay off was minimal and then it creased after half an hour.
I don't like her lipsticks either. Nice packaging rubbish contents.

I looked at her stuff recently and was very underwhelmed , especially by all the orangey toned lipsticks that were meant to be cool toned and hugely over priced .

ThumbTowers · 31/10/2025 17:33

Now i really want to buy the Drunk Elephant bronzing drops .....😆😖

YourAmplePlumPoster · 31/10/2025 18:03

CT makes a powder compact which is refillable. A great idea.

Also I don’t know her name so it will just be general comment. She crossed the line from being helpful to being really pushy and I think JL would want to know that - it’s not what their customers expect.

I had a good experience at Space NK, they have plenty of good quality brands there and the staff I spoke with were v helpful. I got a good serum for under my moisturizer which I think helped with ‘glow’.

Interested in what serum you got from SNK - thanks!

weareallcats · 31/10/2025 18:43

I also like the MAC strobe thing - I use the peachy coloured one, a huge deal for me as nowhere ever seems to have peach anymore. Pink makes me look dreadful - some people still need peach!

Space NK usually ask if you need help and immediately leave you alone if you say no thank you. That’s how it should be. I love Space NK and Sephora as you can browse decent brands without having to deal with the whole make up counter thing.
