Any millennials still struggling to get on board with the flare/wide leg?

I know that the wide leg trouser/jeans look has been around for a few years now.

I still look around and think, what in the 1997 is going on?

Most of my jeans and trousers are now wide leg or straight leg. I’ve even got some flared leggings.

But I still go to reach for my tight ankle leggings (they definitely have their place). I still feel like my 13 year old self in my wide leg jeans. I can’t get used it it even though they are definitely comfier and look fab on everyone else.

I feel like I’ve time warped back to the late 90’s when I wear flared jeans.

I’ve finally weaned myself off my skinny jeans (much to my teen daughters relief) and have settled on ‘mom’ jeans which are essentially just straight leg jeans.

I cant get away with wide leg trousers. I’m really short and just look like a square…

TheAutumnCrow · 29/10/2025 20:45

I’ve just been telling DP about my 1970s electric blue parallels with the high waist. I had dark blue parallels as well.

They were my pride and joy as a younger teenager, bought by saving up my birthday money and babysitting money.

PirateDays · 29/10/2025 20:51

Omg YES! Millennial here and I literally said to my friend just yesterday that I can't get on board with flares because I just feel like I'm wearing my school trousers (which were bootleg but similar enough).

I also can't bear proper wide leg trousers because when I put them on I feel like I'm dressed like my mum back in the day, they just feel so middle-aged to me. Even though I do like them on others, especially smarter styles.

Luckily I have always enjoyed a simple straight leg trouser/jean so I'm not stuck in the skinnies, but I do far prefer a slimmer trouser silhouette. I feel like the straight leg cut is sort of timeless and classic, but flares and wide leg are such extreme, distinctive styles that I feel they will date back to this era very obviously in a few years.

LittleSoo · 29/10/2025 20:56

Ha yes, I caved and got a pair of wide bootleg style black high waist ones from ASOS. Stretchy fabric and flare from my shin downward. Despite being short and chunky, I think they look really nice and balance me well.

SPT2001 · 29/10/2025 20:59

I personally love the flares faze going on at the moment but then I'm a 2000's kid that wishes she was born in the 70s or 80s because it seems so much cooler!

I think it is definetly something the younger generation is struggling to get on board with because my partner, who's 24 like me, hates flares and thinks they look stupid whereas I personally love them I think that's because I've always been brought up as an old soul and maybe that's why I love the idea of flares and disco pants!

Maybe an unpopular opinion!

Exemptfromcontent · 29/10/2025 21:01

No I am absolutely loving flares. I LIVE for flares. Wide leg shit and miss for me. But I hate skinny fit anything now and I’m just so bloody glad mom-jeans have pissed off a bit too.

Taptaptapthedrum · 29/10/2025 21:01

It took me ages to move from flares and bootlegs to wear skinny jeans. Years. I hated seeing my shoes and feet! Now I'm stuck the other way and it's skinny jeans only for me. By the time I work up to bootlegs everyone will be in pedalpushers 😂😂

dudsville · 29/10/2025 21:01

I can't bear the flares, (warning, not a millennial but a GenX) but I can't get enough of barrel shaped trousers. I've just bought one pair that's so comically barrel, but just so damn comfortable. Deepest dark brown cord, mmmmmm.

BlueBoatVillage · 29/10/2025 21:03

I still haven’t jumped on board this trend yet and feel like I’m the last one tbh. Mom jeans, slim leg, straight leg, boyfriend jeans yes! But wide leg/ flared no.

It’s because I have no idea what shoes to wear with them? I’m a classic/ chic style dresser (think Olivia Palmero) and avoid baggy things as although I’m fairly slim as a size 8, I’m short and they make me look bigger and boxy!

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 29/10/2025 21:04

I am a gen Xer and am relieved turnip leg is a thing of the past. I was a bit weird about bootleg revival though, the Anthea Turner vibes were strong.

TickTockBridget · 29/10/2025 21:05

I actually unearthed several pairs of original 00s Gap bootlegs the other day. The denim’s better, the legs are fine, but the rise… Confused

Haha after not wearing skinnies for about 19 years and with a wardrobe full of wides and barrels and straights I wore skinnies today!!!

I went past my 18 year old dd room and yelled out ‘btw I’m wearing skinnies!!’
she just hollered ‘WHHYYYYY??’

they just suddenly feel right again. I bought them about 6-8 months ago but only now have they felt right.

they’ve been in fashion purgatory for soooo long. They are baaaccckkk!!!

kind of hilarious that people are still pondering wides when they have been in fur years and are kind of on the edge of decline.

GiddyDog · 29/10/2025 21:07

I'm bloody thrilled tbh! Flares and wide legs suit me so much better than skinny jeans so I'm loving the variety of styles now. I've even dug out my old top shop flares which I bought around 2006 (are they vintage now??). Interestingly they're a size 12 and are significantly smaller than my more recently purchased size 10's. Won't be embracing low rise if that returns though.

I've embraced the wide leg trousers for work - super comfy too and had compliments but I still fear I look like this as they're so high waisted.

Can't get onboard with the flares.

Isitoveryet25 · 29/10/2025 21:09

I love my wide legs, barrel legs and cropped wide legs (I’m very short!)
there is no way I’ll be wearing any flared leggings - these are definitely for my daughter’s generation. I’d had my fill of these by about 1998. I also won’t be wearing the very long baggy flares as this is too reminiscent of late 90s

i am “Xennial” - cusp Gen x and millennial

PracticalPixie · 29/10/2025 21:10

I am an elder millenial and love the feel of bootcut and wide leg trousers. I'm only comfortable if my ankles can breathe a bit.

What I hate though and did not miss at all about bootcut and wide leg, is when they trail through puddles. Horrible

CeliaCanth · 29/10/2025 21:14

I’m a GenX. Can manage straight legs, am contemplating bootcut (but they remind me strongly of Trinny & Susannah in the early 00’s) but just cannot do barrel legs. Like a PP I am quite happy with mom jeans and am very much enjoying high waists 😂

CheeseWisely · 29/10/2025 21:15

I’ve partially moved back to wide leg or flares (although they’ll need to prise my skinnies off my cold dead legs) but I’m now presented with a problem every time it’s raining, which is currently all the bloody time. I’m too old for rain water gently soaking its way up to my knees. I don’t want to go through that again.

Hallywally · 29/10/2025 21:24

I’m Gen X/Millenial cross over and I was staunchly staying in my skinny jeans. Finally got a wide legged pair and feel like I’m 19/it’s 1999 again. It’s very weird and I don’t really like it.

Floisme · 29/10/2025 21:32

Love flares - it’s at least my third time around.
A bit bored with barrel leg now.
Still like a straight, narrow leg sometimes
But not skinnies - they outstayed their welcome last time and I’ve not forgotten or forgiven yet. (Boomer).

WolfieMuma · 29/10/2025 21:36

It took me ages to join the party, I think I was wearing skinnies until about 6 months ago.
I still do occasionally wear them.

I have to say I’m now a fan of the wide leg, but agree, I feel like I’m literally wearing what I wore in 2000.
Even the haircuts are the same.

I agree too about them getting wet in puddles. I usually wear mine with low heeled boots

CatherineCawoodsbestie · 29/10/2025 21:40

I couldn’t get on the skinny bandwagon - didn’t find them comfy.
Also not keen on flares/ bootlegs.
Love high waisted wide leg and barrel jeans.
Low Waisted is not happening !

What I am loving are this year’s colours - particularly the dark green, brown and maroon. My bank balance on the other hand!

(Gen x here).

@dudsville your corduroys sound lush - any chance of letting me know where you purchased them from! 😁

dudsville · 29/10/2025 21:53

Unhelpfully @CatherineCawoodsbestie they're Toast via Vinted, so not current season. In addition to the comically barrel cords, I have simple barrel cords in a light brown/tan sort of colour, another dark brown that I think they called bitter chocolate, and two tapered wide leg in a colour I think they called pumpkin and another in pear. I love them all very much!

I think barrel is easier than flares and squared off wide leg for rain and footwear as dm shoes go well with them.

PiccadillyPurple · 29/10/2025 22:01

Oh, are flares back in? I've still got some from the 90s lurking in my wardrobe somewhere. Gen X and I remember them first time round in the 70s. The moral is, keep anything long enough and it will come back into fashion.

FlowersFawb · 29/10/2025 22:07

I settled for mom jeans straight leg not baggy but not so skinny they look uncool imo anyway 🤣 im 36.
