Any millennials still struggling to get on board with the flare/wide leg?

I know that the wide leg trouser/jeans look has been around for a few years now.

I still look around and think, what in the 1997 is going on?

Most of my jeans and trousers are now wide leg or straight leg. I’ve even got some flared leggings.

But I still go to reach for my tight ankle leggings (they definitely have their place). I still feel like my 13 year old self in my wide leg jeans. I can’t get used it it even though they are definitely comfier and look fab on everyone else.

As someone with a short torso I appreciate lower waists. High waisted looks like I am drowning in a trouser puddle.

I do need to wear support pants underneath though to avoid the muffin top which is sadly different from the 90s

henlake7 · 29/10/2025 22:33

I love any kind of wide legged, flared, bootcut, balloon or barrel trousers.
Straight, skinny. Tapered or mom styles can just do one as far as I'm concerned.

This has nothing to do with me being gen x and everything do with me having giant muscley calves!😆

Summerhillsquare · 30/10/2025 05:40

Never liked skinny jeans, but then I am Gen X. I don't mind wide if not too flappy, but prefer straight cut. I haven't actually seen many bootcuts, where are you buying them?

FrauPaige · 30/10/2025 06:00

Flares are a no but wide leg jeans are a yes! I am slender so high waisted with ribbed t or crop top to show a bit of stomach and waist, with a statement belt. Or t tucked in when feeling less out there.

NoMoreHotHols · 30/10/2025 06:05

I only have skinny and slim leg ones. I’m short. I tried about 10 wider ones and the amount of material just makes me feel and look bigger so I can’t be bothered.

Brillo8765 · 30/10/2025 06:19

I can't wear wide leg jeans - they look ridiculous on me, although I do have some wide leg trousers for work which I like.

It also took me ages to stop wearing skinnies, but I do have mom jeans and cropped straight leg now, although they don't work for winter so I've recently bought some bootcut from M&S which I really like and think look quite flattering.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 30/10/2025 06:26

I still wear skinny, much more practical in this weather than flares(and my legs are the best part of me). I do have flares, I wear them with converse (feel like I'm back in the 90s though) as I tried several trainers and they were the ones that look the best.

I have Girlfriend jeans but they make my bum and belly look massive. I tend to wear them in the summer as they're looser.

Will never touch bootcut as they give me frumpy 90s/00s nightmares.

I want the trend for high waisted jeans to die, since hitting perimenopause it just makes my menopausal belly more noticeable. A more natural waist is much more flattering.

I'm a certified Gen Xer though.

Focusispower · 30/10/2025 06:26

I am living in M&S flared cord jeggings. Just like I lived in black flared cords in the late 90s. Loving all the jeans shapes - just bought Uniqlo wide leg yesterday and they’re ace.

The one thing I will NEVER re-embrace though is low rise. Gone are my days of having jeans that sit on the hips with a triangle thing visible. High waists all day - pants, trousers, leggings.

Focusispower · 30/10/2025 06:27

I probably should declare that I’m not a millennial - 1980 so on the cusp - an Xennial I think they call it?!

Pozz · 30/10/2025 06:31

I’m Gen X and love wide leg. I struggle with shoes for them though - don’t get me wrong I love trainers but smart shoes are all pointy for flares and I don’t want to go back there.

I’m not interested in barrel and am way over skinny leg but tight legs are required for dog walking in the rain so I have leggings even though I feel like I’m stepping back in time.

I’ve come to the conclusion that most people need a mix of styles to cover all occasions!

IDontHateRainbows · 30/10/2025 06:35

Not a millennial, but i can't get on board with flared stuff. Wide leg, yes. Straight yes. Even skinny/ leggings. Seeing flared sleeves a lot too. Again, no. I dont want my dinner all over my clothes. Cuffed sleeves have a purpose.

DanglingMod · 30/10/2025 06:38

I have noticed that Gen Xers (like me) and Boomers are far more likely to have adopted wide legs more quickly than Millenials. Wide leg is our childhood (70s) and our late teenage/early twenties (90s) and brings back happy memories.

Those in our 50s were the last to adopt skinnies and the first to ditch them. (Some) Millennials, on the other hand, are still wearing skinnies, still straightening their hair. It's like they're determined that their fashion is the correct one and will never change.

Long story short, I am definitely seeing 50 and above women looking more "in" at the moment than 35-40 something women.

DanglingMod · 30/10/2025 06:39

(But bell bottomed cheap leggings are definitely only for the kids)

ToriTheStoryteller · 30/10/2025 06:41

Gen X. Have loved the wide leg trend but also still love skinny/slim leg. It's nice to have such contrasting silhouettes in the same wardrobe after years of only skinnies being available.

Don't think I can ever revisit bootcut though. I loved it at the time, I can picture myself in my plum coloured cord low hipsters with a silk skinny shirt tucked in and a zig-zag parting in my hair, looking exactly like Amber Valetta in this Gucci ad (in my mind anyway).

Any millennials still struggling to get on board with the flare/wide leg?
Imcurvyandilikeit · 30/10/2025 06:42

I'm a millenial and can't get on with flares. I like wide legged jeans though. I just struggle with what shoes to wear with jeans so end up in leggings alllll the time

dressinggowns · 30/10/2025 07:02

skinny jeans have been trying to creep back for a while & I think it's inevitable. We have had years & years of wider trouser silhouettes and it's getting a bit boring now.

Plus the 00s came after the 90s so we are at that stage. I won't be doing ultra low rise this time though!

I’m still firmly in my skinnies!
I have two pairs of wide leg trousers which I sometimes wear in summer because they’re floaty and cooler.
I remember the draught up the trouser leg in winter from when I was young, at least skinnies keep my legs warm.
All of my tops go with my skinnies. I have no idea what top to wear with wide legs, I always end up looking twice the size I am and really shapeless. None of my existing tops look right. I’m very short and slim so avoid anything too baggy in general.

Dd looks fantastic in wide legs but she wears crop tops which there is no chance I’m wearing (too cold, too old, too had-4-babies-stomach). She’s also taller than me.

TBH I’m nearly 50 and a mother of 4, I don’t really care too much about what is fashionable as long as I’m comfortable and don’t feel like I look like shit.

iamoit · 30/10/2025 07:29

I ditched the skinnies about 2 years ago now I think it was. I just occasionally wear black jeggings if it’s raining 😂 fashion aside I prefer tight fit really.

i loved Cat’s jeans on traitors last night but not sure if they’re too young for me!

BendingSpoons · 30/10/2025 07:39

When I was doing GCSE German, there was a bit in the text book that mentioned school students wearing what translated to 'carrot trousers'. I was horrified at the idea then!

I went shopping recently. I need some warmer winter trousers. I just feel most of the trousers are so wide! I'm worried I'll get a breeze round my ankles! I considered trying on some bootleg leggings, but couldn't quite do it!

Smoothwater · 30/10/2025 07:42

i am here right now. Tried on five pairs of skinny jeans yesterday and they just looked weird, will never be able to unread the ‘turnip leg’ comment from previous poster above.

I have flares and really like them but live in the UK so puddles are everywhere and I can’t be doing with wet trousers.

I own one pair of straight leg which are fine but starting to look a bit old now.

I bought some mum jeans and they were sooooo unflattering and really reminiscent of my mum in the 1980s, so I don’t know if I can get behind that, even though they were very comfortable.

I concluded that I might just never wear jeans again.

I bought wide leg jeans from M&S in extra short. They are the best I’ve found but I’m still not fully convinced they are for a short 46 year old size 14 with a belly. I’d love some decent flares. Not bootcut but proper flares like we bought second hand in Temple bar when we were teenagers. I still can’t find wide leg casual trousers either. Fed up of skinnies and never got on with mom jeans. I live in leggings! In such a jean rut.

Itworkedout · 30/10/2025 08:06

Mom jeans and wider leg I can do. Flares just no. I’m not tall enough they look ridiculous. Flared leggings great for teens. I have seen slouch socks are back I grew upon the 80’s/90s this is dejavu with boot cut jeans too. I’m missing a good boot and a skinny jean though! Sometimes I give in they just look better!

Hollietree · 30/10/2025 08:16

I’m loving the flares - jeans and smart trousers. But I’m struggling with SHOES! What shoes are we wearing ladies?

piratesparrot · 30/10/2025 08:18

No, I am thrilled flares are back.

I've spent the last decade in skinny jeans looking like a parsnip. Welcome back lovely flares!
