Any millennials still struggling to get on board with the flare/wide leg?

I know that the wide leg trouser/jeans look has been around for a few years now.

I still look around and think, what in the 1997 is going on?

Most of my jeans and trousers are now wide leg or straight leg. I’ve even got some flared leggings.

But I still go to reach for my tight ankle leggings (they definitely have their place). I still feel like my 13 year old self in my wide leg jeans. I can’t get used it it even though they are definitely comfier and look fab on everyone else.

I’m loving the flares - jeans and smart trousers. But I’m struggling with SHOES! What shoes are we wearing ladies?

Still all about the trainers for me. I saw someone in black wide legs with ballet pumps the other day and I suddenly panicked I’d forgotten my maths homework!

I’m loving it! I was very reluctant to move to
skinnies anyway. I am fairly tall and hour glass therefore wide leg and flares both work really well for my shape, not to mention so much more comfortable!

Adjusting to find what tops work with the new leg shapes took some time but overall I feel way better and smarter in wide leg/flare based outfits!

Lillupsy · 30/10/2025 08:56

I’m right at the end of gen X and it’s still skinny jeans for me. I’m really short and also stupidly petite. Whenever I wear wider leg I look like a child dressing in my parent’s clothes 🤣. They’re also totally unflattering!

lavendarwillow · 30/10/2025 09:03

I think the most flattering jeans really are bootcut, you get away from the skinny but still have a more fitted style overall.

Thelankyone · 30/10/2025 09:29

I’m gen x and my daughter gen z, and both of us embraced wide leg, her before me, well before me. She urged me to try, and I bought a pair and thought ooh they are comfy and flattering and now all my trousers and jeans are wide leg, and also Now I can’t put skinnies on as it feels so dated, but have kept them as they will come back. I also like a gentle flare.

i was with some friends at the weekend and one was wearing skinnies and I did think it looked v dated, howver she is short, and heavier, and I am not sure it would work on her to be fair as she is an apple shape and I think it would add width to her.

so I do think dressing for your shape is important. Wear what suits you. However on saying that I do think a straight leg on her would have been both more current and more flattering, as sort of nod to it.

also I think experimenting with the cut is important, I don’t like anything too wide leg, and defo nothing barrel, but wider that straight for sure, just not the massive wide legs I see younger folks wearing and I like them in a fluid material, not stiff.

PerkyCyanPoet · 30/10/2025 09:44

I am still very much a skinny jeans girl in the winter - they’re just so much more practical with a chunky boot. In summer I love a slim mom jean with my ankles out.

I’ve two pairs of flares from M&S and I love them! I can’t really get on board with wide leg jeans, trousers are OK but wide jeans just make me look so blocky and bottom heavy?! So the flares are much more flattering. I wear them with trainers mostly. I don’t go on dressy nights out really but I’d loveee to wear a flare with a pointy heel for a night out, it’s still so chic to me!

I think with jeans atm anything goes!

Zanatdy · 30/10/2025 12:23

I like them now, much more flattering these high waisted flared trousers / leggings

evilharpy · 30/10/2025 16:25

Very tail end of Gen X here (but identify more as a millennial). Fully embracing the wide legs again and hope the skinnies never come back. However my preference is definitely barrel, they suit my size and shape but I know they are not for everyone.

TheDenimPoet · 30/10/2025 17:23

Yeah, I just won't even think about buying them for exactly that reason. It doesn't feel modern!

lindyloo57 · 30/10/2025 17:32

I have kept a couple of pairs of skinnies levis, for dog walks, i have 2 pair of slim bootcut from marks and the front pocket one which are with a little wider leg from marks, I love wide legs trousers more for the softness, jeans in a wide leg I find stiff, but I did buy the mango Catherine crops wide leg jeans on me full length, mind you they still have the labels on, and this week brought the marks boyfriend style which I love, a new style for me, and the slim cropped which will be great in summer with flat sandals.

When I was doing GCSE German, there was a bit in the text book that mentioned school students wearing what translated to 'carrot trousers'. I was horrified at the idea then!

I went shopping recently. I need some warmer winter trousers. I just feel most of the trousers are so wide! I'm worried I'll get a breeze round my ankles! I considered trying on some bootleg leggings, but couldn't quite do it!

We always used to say skinnies look like the keep Britain tidy man with the pointy feet on the back of chewing gum wrappers. Remember him?

janehopper · 30/10/2025 18:50

Yes, because I'm at an awkward height. Short is a bit flappy and normal length requires a heel.

stardust777 · 30/10/2025 19:33

Yes! And don't get me started on those clown leg jeans.

BruFord · 30/10/2025 19:38

As a Gen Xer, I’m too old for your demographic, but I agree that it’s
been weird making the transition from skinny’s to wide.

I’ve decided that I love the wide legged look though, they’re SO comfortable. They create a breeze flapping around ;-)z

Brelim · 31/10/2025 09:04

I’ve never worn skinny jeans. I’m short and I think they just look odd on me. The only people I have seen pull them off are tall slim models. I love the barrel trousers, they’re so comfortable and flattering on me. I even like the wide leg. My favourite look is the super wide 1920s trousers. Sadly I think I need to lose a few more kilos for that!

TealReader · 01/11/2025 06:14

Older millennial here. I always hated skinnies. Being short and hourglass they just did not suit me. From the 00s (low waisted) through skinnies era I mostly wore skirts. I’m now loving all the trouser styles out there!

llamashoe · 01/11/2025 09:21

eugh yes. I ordered the Temple jeans from Palome recently and whilst they are lovely on, as soon as I put on shoes I just think "nope!" so I'm going to return them. I'm not a big fan of jeans in general - i'm similar to a PP re having a classic dress sense so maybe that's partly it. btw the jeans are much more flared in real life than on the model on the website.

cuberoot · 01/11/2025 09:43

Older millennial ('82) and am so, so relieved that wide leg/flares are back, I have hated skinnies with all my heart (small chested apple shape which with skinnies looks like an inverted hourglass) and I hope they will NEVER return!

WestwardHo1 · 01/11/2025 15:20

On this note can anyone suggest any wide legged/flared jeans with low to mid rise waist? I cannot stand the trend in recent years for high rise. My torso is already short enough and high waist make it look more deformed!

Would love to find some like I was wearing in the early 2000s.

waitamo · 01/11/2025 15:27

Don't like them on me anyway. They make me look like a barrell or something, just not right. I do have a few pairs, but rarely wear them now.

I suit the cigarette/taper/skinny leg style much better so that's what I use. To hell with trends I say!

zigazigaaaing · 01/11/2025 15:36

I’m 38 and just over 5 feet. i’m skinny jeans all the way and proud!

keepincool · 02/11/2025 18:00

This GenXer went out and bought 2 pairs of wide leg jeans on the back of this thread. I tried them over a year ago when I was 3 sizes bigger and just looked dumpy (I'm 5'4"). I gave it another go today with M&s short length and they look okay, and sooo comfy 🙂

BruFord · 02/11/2025 20:35

I know, I love them @keepincool. I flap around in them feeling so comfy. I had to hem mine though. 😁

ThatPinkShark · 06/11/2025 06:23

There's no need to follow the trend. Just wear what makes you feel comfortable.

Richardscaryisscary · 06/11/2025 06:31

I'm gen X and I've never totally let go of flares, proper flares not bootleg. So I'm OK with that, but will still go for skinnies in wet weather.

It's the current high rise that I can't stand. I have a long torso, yet the rise is still ridiculous. It's uncomfortable and emphasises my stomach. M&S have a mid rise flare, but they have bloody creases down the front, which I hate.
