London trip

Off to London soon. I have lots of clothes and lots of ideas for what to wear. I’m also absolutely not here for anybody wanting to tell me that nobody gives a shit and only foreign tourists and provincial idiots care about what they wear.

What I am here for is wanting to know what YOU would wear for the following:

  • A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch
  • a theatre trip
  • a casual dinner and pubs

I love talking clothes, so this is just an excuse to be nosy!

My only real contemplation points are shoes and coats, as ideally I only want one coat and one pair of shoes for the whole trip. Bags will be a Longchamp le Pliage and then a tiny cross body Longchamp plus a Westwood for the theatre, I think.

Lovely colour. What’s the fabric like?

Oh the usual man made hammered satin stuff 🙄 but priced accordingly at £30. It’s fairly thin, but opaque, drapey and not sweaty! It’s like a satin, more sheen than shine if that makes sense, but on it could easily be Jigsaw or &other stories but without their price tags for what is still a polyester blouse. Covered buttons, button placket, shirred cuffs, tiny puffed shoulders, gathered yoke to back, good length to wear untucked but fine enough to tuck in without bulk. Comes in a nice green colour too

I’ve realised I have a real need for some more blouses to dress up jeans. It’s so hard to find nice ones.

I like Sezane & Monsoon for a blouse although I don't really wear dressy ones so their styles may be to casual for you.

Rina66 · 27/10/2025 06:17

This one is also really nice on, gives Victoria Beckham design vibes, a lovely flattering cream satin fabric, again quite drapey, but still polyester, there’s no escaping it but only £19.50, would be beautiful in a silk or a fine wool crepe , but it’s Tescos.

Thanks all.

Sezanne much higher than what I’m prepared to spend.

The cream one is too high necked for my shape and would be a disaster on me.

The shape of the Roman one and both colours would be good on me but not sure about the fabric. I’ll see if I can see it in the flesh.

I’m looking back to the days of gorgeous silk items in Warehouse in beautiful prints. Sigh.

Oh yes, Warehouse were amazing for silk, that’s a real blast from the past, my daughter had a Saturday job there whilst at sixth form and we used to get 40% staff discount off! M & S Autograph do have some real silk blouses but they’re very basic designs, either revere collar or shirt style, cream or black.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2025 06:55

Plain silk shirts look awful on me. The collars are always too big for my tiny pea head and the bodies far too long.

Floisme · 27/10/2025 06:59

I got married in a silk dress from Warehouse.

My favourite tops are 1970s shirts at the moment which are Synthetic City - I have to wear a cotton T underneath - so not much help I’m afraid. But have a lovely time.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/10/2025 07:44

@Floisme How lovely!

Cotton T-shirts under polyester a good idea. Tbh I don’t actually sweat much (one of the weird and few upsides of menopause for me) but I don’t like the feel of a lot of synthetics.

I’ve just done my usual trick of repacking before a trip. The black wide flared jeans are out, replaced by two dresses, one long and ditsy and the other a very short jumper dress. I might switch the trench coat for a leather jacket- can’t make my mind up so it will be an at the door decision in half an hour!

If you like 'ditsy' and can transfer that to a blouse, Liberty print boho-style shirts are a lovely way of dressing up jeans. Small collars, yoke fall at back, not too long in the body. Expensive, but x that by the amount of wear and it works out OK. They wash really well and last forever.

I love Liberty fabric but not to wear. It’s all too colourful and cute for me. I like ditsy with a black background or really dark florals, but Liberty rarely do those. If they did, I’d sew myself some tops in their fabric.

Am really enjoying this thread especially as I am off to London in a few weeks to celebrate my retirement with 4 of my oldest friends. I am gently “rediscovering” myself and greatly enjoying the experience.

Congratulations!

do please come back and tell us what you choose.

My outfit for today was fine and the food at Trishna was gorgeous. My only regret was that my jeans didn’t leave enough room to finish my dessert!

It’s been mild today and I was glad that I did finally settle on my trench rather than leather jacket. I’d have been too warm in the latter.

I’d wear my barrel leg jeans with Adidas trainers, charcoal grey merino wool jumper for the sightseeing with a leopard print crossbody bag and if cold enough my long black wool coat.
For the evening meals/drinks - I’ve just ordered this dress which I think is perfect for dressing down with chunky black DM style boots and my Allsaints leather jacket for dressing down and heeled clack suede knee high boots for dressing it up.

That dress is lovely - but isn't it the most bizarre photo ...?!!!!!

teacupzs · 27/10/2025 18:04

@EleanorMc67 I thought that! the first photo is so unflattering 😆

She looks as if she's trying to find the comfiest position in which to give birth ...!!!

TheLemonOtter · 28/10/2025 07:38

Love that dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie , hope you had a great time!

Rina66 · 28/10/2025 10:49

Yes, beautiful dress @RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie, great choice, the outfits sound perfect - we’re off to Ronnie Scott’s next month, it’s always a challenge for me as we like to park at Outer circle Regents Park and walk down in to Soho, it’s the usual shoe dilemma!
I have always loved Allsaints, I was wearing a t shirt of theirs yesterday, I reckon it’s 15 years old at least, it just looks better and better with age, although I have machine Dylon’d it once as the black had faded.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 28/10/2025 16:27

Thanks both. We had a lovely time at the theatre, although I must admit I’m far from Toby Jones’ biggest fan.

@Rina66 ive only got 4 or 5 things from All Saints, but they are all things of beauty.

Do pop back with an outfit report.

Today we’ve been to Brompton Cemetery and then for a walk in Richmond. My feet huuuuurt but my dress was nice!

Can I ask what bag you used? I’m in London at the end of November, so it’s a perfect excuse to buy a new handbag/crossbody/ shoulder bag.

I’ve got a baby Longchamp Energy crossbody and my Le Pliage. Tbh I wish I’d brought my Uniqlo bag instead of the former. It’s easier to get my purse/phone in and out of on the tube.

Can I be very bold and ask how old(ish) you are and what dress size(ish) you are - we sound not dissimilar!

Rina66 · 29/10/2025 08:27

I want to go to Peggy Jean in Richmond, I think it’s one for the summer though. We often walk through Brompton Cemetery as DH is from Fulham and a Chelsea supporter, I love that part of London.
