London trip

Off to London soon. I have lots of clothes and lots of ideas for what to wear. I’m also absolutely not here for anybody wanting to tell me that nobody gives a shit and only foreign tourists and provincial idiots care about what they wear.

What I am here for is wanting to know what YOU would wear for the following:

  • A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch
  • a theatre trip
  • a casual dinner and pubs

I love talking clothes, so this is just an excuse to be nosy!

My only real contemplation points are shoes and coats, as ideally I only want one coat and one pair of shoes for the whole trip. Bags will be a Longchamp le Pliage and then a tiny cross body Longchamp plus a Westwood for the theatre, I think.

We will be able to dump luggage before lunch ( we often do this in the lockers at the Wellcome gallery - v useful!), but not check in, hence no chance to change from travel clothes to lunch clothes.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I like your theatre choice.

I'll have to wait to see a weather forecast - it's not next week, but in the next couple of weeks. Definitely only taking one coat, but might be persuaded to take a spare pair of shoes or boots!

In an ideal weather world and if two pairs of shoes, I'd go:
travel in DMs, a midi skirt or dress and leather jacket - this would be for lunch too / alternately I could do wide legged trousers, nice top and leather jacket, in which case I'd go for smart trainers instead of DMs (this depends on if the trousers feel too works or not!)

theatre - mini dress and heeled suede boots / or DMs / or midi dress and DMs or trainers

casual day or sightseeing and pub etc - black flares / trainers or DMs / t-shirt for day, blouse for night), leather jacket

I don't think carrot leg jeans are for me tbh, but I might have a look in Marks.

And yes to a scarf - I am a big fan of scarves and have lots. If it's cold, I have wonderful ones from Westwood and All Saints; if it's milder, I've got a couple of nice silk ones that go well with a biker or trench.

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie great question as I'm going to London next weekend going very similar things! I'm currently thinking-
Train down- jeans, short boots maybe a fair isle and cross body bag.
Dinner and theatre - tuxedo dress with heels ( theatre, hotel and restaurant all within 5 mins walk)
Sunday -( Race Across World Experience and lunch) leather trousers, fair isle, boots and bag as before. I've a great lightweight coat if it's going to be wet.

@MissFritton65 Wear super comfy shoes for RATW! I’ve done this and we did c20,000 steps I think. You need comfort!!

It’s great though - enjoy.

MissFritton65 · 19/10/2025 13:07

@Jadebear Pleased it's good! Wearing my Docs so should be OK. Xx

BlueWorkDay · 19/10/2025 13:10

What I would wear... (45 year old Londoner).

  • A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch

Wide leg indigo jeans, cream shell top, cream/taupe boyfriend blazer, white tennis shoes (your trainers look perfect).

  • a theatre trip

100 denier black tights, black chelsea boots, short boucle skirt, cream silk shirt, taupe cashmere jumper (layering as the theatre can be warm).

  • a casual dinner and pubs

Gathered ankle cuff soft light blue jeans, boyish striped shirt, over sized black trench coat, tennis shoes.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2025 13:19

@BlueWorkDay Your trench coat sounds fab.

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I've just looked more closely at the print on your pink theatre dress - fabulous!

I've got an amazing silk mix midi dress from All Saints which might be good for the theatre, but I don't like my DMs with it, as it feels a bit too Halloween/old goth!

Unless Oliver has moved it’s more than a 5 min walk. More like 15-20 in heels from there? And London/Covent Garden pavements not always heel-friendly.
just sharing so you don’t get stuck in a world of heel regret!

@mustwashmycurtains thanks! We'll probably get a taxi because my husband is currently having chemotherapy.

As someone said, scarves are important... especially if like me, you're likely to get a splot of coffee (or worse, turmeric from Trishna on your top).

With that in mind, I'd wear a black shell top, rather than a cream one to Trishna as one drip of sauce could be a top ruiner...

Friendlyfart · 19/10/2025 13:33

Theatre - anything goes. Wear layers as it can get hot.
casual dinner/pubs - jeans/nice top.
shopping: comfortable footwear, showerproof jacket. Smart trousers:top underneath for the lunch.
i live in London & seriously unless there’s a dress code, anything goes.

FastFood · 19/10/2025 14:17

Ok challenge accepted

A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch
Probably a black miniskirt with an oversized (a man's shirt really) crisp white shirt, black tights and chunky chelsea boots. And my beautiful Sezane trench to be warm enough. (Its not cold in London these days)

A theatre trip
My Cos green barrel trousers, chunky chelsea again, and a fitted thin black turtle neck jumper, tucked in the trousers. On top, an oversized leopard overcoat

A casual dinner and pubs
Gray mom jeans, black high top converse, a button up white shirt, loose grey sweatshirt, navy baseball cap and an off-white oversized bomber jacket

Accessories (every occasion): chunky golden bracelets, a necklace, rings, gold earrings, watch, and my quite imposing spectacles. Oh and a totebag because I can't be bothered with handbags.

BangingOn · 19/10/2025 15:02

Great opening post, I’m sick of the joyless replies to anyone who dares to enjoy planning outfits and happens to be going to London.

I would stick with one pair of boots but possibly stretch to packing a jacket and wearing a coat 🤔

For travel and lunch I’d wear a Bella Freud cashmere sweater dress with gold side stripes and flat black AllSaints knee boots. Over the top I’d wear my AllSaints Blaize long black military style coat.

In the evening I’d change into a Bella Freud x Fred Perry pleated miniskirt, black tights, and a grey draped polo neck from Acne. This looks nice with my AllSaints Rummy cropped wool military jacket so if I had space I’d pack this, if not I’d stick to the long coat.

Casual sightseeing outfit, I’d probably wear a Maje pleated black kilt style skirt that works well with the boots and a grey cashmere jumper.

I've had my heating on for weeks!

@BangingOn Thank you. I have serious wardrobe envy. I think it will be too warm for cashmere though.

@FastFood love the sound of your lunch day outfit too. I look horrible in white shirts and envy those who suit them.

@VimesandhisCardboardBoots Is that really all you wear? Maybe you’re on the wrong thread, although obviously it’s entirely up to you what you wear and where you post.

Thank you! Vinted has to take most of the credit though, I’ve had some great finds recently. I am permanently freezing so never too warm for me in cashmere, although I understand why normal people look at me strangely when they are in t shirts and I’m in jumpers.

user44455557621 · 19/10/2025 17:43

I would go with your suggestion of silky blouse and nice jeans for Trishna, which I think feels like exactly the right vibe for there. Some people will be quite dressed up and some people will be in scruffy jeans and trainers, so you'll hit the sweet spot. Like a PP, I'd go with either low heeled brown suede boots or cowboy boots.

I'd wear the same jeans with a more casual shirt and trainers for sightseeing.

Silky blouse, some kind of cool skirt, and the same boots for the theatre.

I'd bring a light cashmere sweater, an umbrella and this jacket (in the brown tweed)

I live in London and am hardly ever cold here except in the dead of winter, and if you are, it gives you an excuse to stop into a lovely coffee shop or gallery.

Theatres can be warm, so wear layers.

Comfortable shoes are a must, as you’ll do far more walking than you anticipate.
