London trip

Off to London soon. I have lots of clothes and lots of ideas for what to wear. I’m also absolutely not here for anybody wanting to tell me that nobody gives a shit and only foreign tourists and provincial idiots care about what they wear.

What I am here for is wanting to know what YOU would wear for the following:

  • A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch
  • a theatre trip
  • a casual dinner and pubs

I love talking clothes, so this is just an excuse to be nosy!

My only real contemplation points are shoes and coats, as ideally I only want one coat and one pair of shoes for the whole trip. Bags will be a Longchamp le Pliage and then a tiny cross body Longchamp plus a Westwood for the theatre, I think.

I have the Franklin shop jacket and it's so practical because it's lightweight. A heavy coat doesn't really work with tube and shopping due to temperature fluctuations.

@teacupzs I definitely wouldn’t do Michelin star in a sweatshirt and jeans. Smart jeans and a silky blouse maybe.

Who wants to lug a spare coat on the train though?

Depends how in to your outfits you are! I would and have! 😆

This is very cool. It wouldn’t suit me at all but I can imagine it working well on someone other than me. My coat won’t be heavy - likely to be a cotton trench or an All Saints biker.

I live in London and love clothes too. Yesterday I went to a gallery and lunch and made the effort to dress up. Wore wide leg faux leather trousers, a t shirt and grey cashmere jumper, silver trainers with a coat. The gallery was quite warm so had to strip off. I’m saying this as you should layer up so you don’t overheat indoors. If I was going on and out in the evening I would have swapped the top to something a little more dressy like a silk blouse, with more jewellery but kept the bottom half.
Your trip sounds fab. Enjoy!

I love clothes but I also value my back. Could take a case I suppose, if I have to!

I would wear green or mustard seasalt cords ( 7/8) during the day for sightseeing with bright socks and loafers or my Ganni Chelsea boots if it's raining. Slouchy navy toast Merino wool jumper on top of a toast burnt orange t. Socks are navy and orange stripe.

For lunch I have a navy toast dress I would wear with same boots or shoe combo

For the theatre I have a Sandra Rhodes two-piece in purple I would wear with silver Adriana Papelli heels.

No need for a coat in London I find it far too hot. I do have a neck warmer and wrist warmer from Brora if needed tho.

teacupzs · 19/10/2025 10:05

Everyone is different, for me it's just a lunch and the travelling and sightseeing would take precedence.

Floisme · 19/10/2025 10:11

I love my coats but I wouldn't take an extra one on a train trip, especially as I'd be hoping to acquire some additional clothes while I was there. Blush

FKAT · 19/10/2025 10:13

Coat is the most difficult - a light trench is best as rain will be more of a risk than cold but I go to the theatre a lot and always struggle with what to do with my coat. It either gets tangled up in the seat or rolled in a ball under it getting in the way every time you stand up. I'd try to avoid wherever possible taking a coat to a theatre or use the cloakroom.

Unless you have a box of course, which always solves a lot of problems.

teacupzs · 19/10/2025 10:16

Well Id wear the quilted coat and my velvet coat isn't that heavy. Granted I live in London so wouldn't need to travel but have done so for plenty of city breaks.

teacupzs · 19/10/2025 10:18

My mary janes/ballets are flat and lightweight though (stine goya mesh ones), heels and boots are heavier so that gives me more weight flexibility!

I’m hoping it’s not “just” a lunch - hopping it will be the highlight of the day! 😂

Trench coat or car coat !!! Deffo
Trainers which can go with all outfits for the casual parts of the trip !
personally I would wear joggers to travel and maybe wandering !
Trousers/jeans with slim fitting white T-shirt
simple dress that can be dressed up or down with sensible nice shoes 👞! Depending on your style I’m a flat loafer brogue gal ..

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/10/2025 10:26

@Doggymummar It sounds like you love colour. Pretty much all of my wardrobe is black! Red lipstick is about as colourful as I usually get.

I’ll have to have a coat of some sort. Hopefully the weather will be dry, but I suspect it’s going to be rainy.

@Floisme I’m not allowed to buy clothes. I am, however, allowed to hit Daunt books.

@Londontown12 Unfortunately, there won’t be chance to change between travel and lunch.

Totally confused. How long is your trip - are you going for the day, a week, a couple of days?

Catpiece · 19/10/2025 10:32

Deffo trainers and Chelsea boots x

fiorentina · 19/10/2025 10:36

I would wear barrel jeans, some comfy but not chunky trainers and a blouse or stylish jumper for the sightseeing and lunches. For the evening and theatre then swop out for some statement pointed flats which are lightweight to carry, and wear a trench coat if it’s still warm enough. I’d focus on accessories that make me feel good too, a triangular scarf over the trench, nice earrings for the evening.
I never get overdressed up for trips to London but prefer outfits that look well put together and make me feel good.

Have fun!

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 19/10/2025 10:37

I went this weekend, three dresses, nice flat shoes, trench coat. The tat shops had some fab hats at the moment, wished that I had bought one.

Other than the restaurant I wouldn’t worry too much about bring smart, I go to the theatre a lot and some people just come in what they wore shopping in the day time, I looked smart in a nice dress (long sleeve shift, cream and black) and shoes, some people looked like they had come straight from a farmers market.

Don’t lug luggage around, loads of left luggage options and hotel will have a luggage room etc, I saw people with huge suitcases in tourist areas, there really isn’t the need.

Use Tube, Bolt and/or Uber to get around.

DancingNotDrowning · 19/10/2025 10:42

A day that includes travelling, some sight seeing and shopping and a casual Michelin star lunch

• I’d wear some slightly cropped barrel ish leg trousers in a tweedy fabric that I don’t actually own but have a really clear image in mind and will leap on them when I find them!

• a sezanne chlo silk blouse

• an M&S cashmere jumper

• a very subtle Gucci horse but belt

• celine Margaret chunky loafers

• Claudie pierlot cream oversize wool coat - I am always cold

Theatre trip

• short leopard print dress, opaque tights loafers and coat as above

a casual dinner and pubs

• M&S barrel leg jeans (totally in love with these)
• Hayley Menzies cardigan over a cotton vest

coat and loafers as above

Chewbecca · 19/10/2025 10:53

How soon?

If literally the next couple of days, it is still kind of warm, evenings too so I would skip the proper coat, too hot for walking and public transport.

But next weekend the temp is expected to drop, especially overnight.

Anyway, I am a jeans girl and I light packer and and I would wear the same ones the entire weekend.
I am in m&s carrots at the moment with really comfy clompy boots. I would consider also taking some coloured smart trainers.

So the only switches I would make are tops - sweatshirt, silk shirt, current favourite smart blouse.

Coat wise I err practical rather than stylish and would simply take my lightweight everyday coat. I would not look cool though!

During the day either this dress or the raspberry pink version of this dress, possibly a fair isle waistcoat over it.

Theatre and dinner this dress.

If definitely no rain, a short, boxy tweed jacket from Cabbage and Roses or if rain a green parka from Oska.

I wouldn't limit myself to one pair of shoes but if forced to, then these.

If I wanted to look stylish for a London break (as opposed to my usual looking bit frazzled lugging my laptop to Lizzy line entrance at Dean St) I'd chose the following items:

A big scarf - lots of people already in their scarves
low/mid heel brown pointy boots worn under flare/wide leg jeans
brown trainers or any colour but white
Whatever lightweight coat I fancied

Would also add a satiny shirt in a dark colour
Some long thin gold necklaces
