Hope your op goes well @Isabelle70

I got a notification that the JL Heroes box was back but didn’t buy it as I was - finally, after many years - on holiday abroad.

I have just got back from South Korea and, omg, their skincare/cosmetics are good, but overwhelming in their variety.

Olive Young shops in the main areas - especially at night - are heaving - full of locals and tourists - and the popular stuff can sell out. The stores can feel a bit ‘frantic’ and overwhelming.

Much quieter and more accessible were Tir Tir, Innisfree and Amore.

Olive Young were bad for freebies with purchase, (although I did get a good free gift in-store for joining their Global Loyalty programme), as were Tir Tir.

I got a surprise freebie from OY for signing up to the Lotte hotel loyalty programme at check in!

The lovely girl in Amore in Busan gave me what felt like half the shop for free on top of a GWP, when I bought a couple of things and I got three free face masks with just a cheap lip balm purchase from Saem at the airport.

Daiso turned out to be a good place to buy ridiculously cheap lip gloss, balms and blusher. I reckoned if the locals were going mad for them at under £2 a time, they were good enough for me! I got through a whole tube of their £1 hand cream as a substitute for forgotten body lotion and wish I had bought more - it was very good.

I found a discount beauty shop in Busan with face masks at 30p each but could only spend two minutes in there as adult DS isn’t exactly a fan of watching me shop!

Will post a few pics later if anyone is interested.

This is the dream 🥰 So happy for you and wish I’d been with you instead of adult DS ( I know that feeling of being watched ) I loved reading your post , photos please !!

Does no one else find that anything with vitamin c in it makes their face ever so slightly orangey, as the day goes on? Or is it just me?

I start off looking OK, but by about lunch time there’s definitely a bit of an Oompa Loompa vibe going on. It doesn’t matter whether it’s an oil, or a serum, or a moisturiser with vitamin c in it, they all do it.

i am very very pale, with quite oily skin, and have to pick my foundations v carefully to avoid oxidation, so there must be something in my skin that just reacts badly to vitamin c. I know it’s supposed to make your skin glow, I’d just prefer it not to be the ready break glow!

🤣🤣🤣

I'm very pale and cool toned. I'm now wondering if I've been walking around with an orangey tone I'd not noticed. My eyesight has got worse this year so it's possible. 😂

I’m sure you’re not, Ova, you seem far too savvy re: skincare etc to be doing that!

I am warm toned, so I suppose I have slightly yellowish undertones already - so it doesn’t take much to “enhance” that.

I have been stalking the JL Refined box for the last week with no luck, even tried the ordering store stock option but was never able to complete the request. Just came to have a look at this thread, see the comments and managed to nab one!
I am having an op next week so hopefully this will make me feel a little better.

Hope your op goes well. You'll deserve some treats after.

I’m really not an avid fan and never buy it, but the Votary Sensitive Resurfacing Peel from 2024 Liberty advent calendar is genuinely gentle. I like to throw lots of hyaluronic acid at the issue and Barbara Sturm Hyaluronic Drops are the best but so pricey, I had a sample and would love to repurchase!

The BORNTOSTANDOUT Dirty Milk I’ve been stalking with different codes, is out of stock now. Exclusive to Cult Beauty. When will I learn 😫. On the other hand I have a coat arriving today from Liberty Loyalty event.

Ive dabbled with retinoids. Sr luna which was good and sr ret 1 which was ok. Ive started using medik 8 ret 1 which is the weakest but wanted to start gentle as have rosacea and many things trigger it. Ive been using twice a week and have a number 3 ready to use once finished. My skin feels lovely and soft but it is expensive and more so as the numbers go up.
Ther will be cheaper alternatives but my skin does prefer the more expensive stuff. Im 52 and menopausal, and definitely look and feel it 🤣🤣🥰🥰

Thanks guys - we had a great time, but it would have been nice to have a shopping buddy.

Here are some pics.

First one is of the masks and assorted skincare. I bought several from the BOH Probioderm range from OY so I could get a feel for if that worked for me. Plus I got a good discount and I noticed it was the one staff were recommending for those of us with more mature skin!

The second shows my freebies from Amore and the third shows my first (and biggest) purchase from OY, so done if those items are in pic one too.

Oh wow 🤩 that’s a very exciting haul. What I love is that everything is a bit different, I love a holiday skincare haul but Korea is next level !

IlovePond · 01/11/2025 13:22

I don’t think I can buy anything else atm, @TragicMuse but that looks good.

IlovePond · 01/11/2025 13:39

Here’s my last pic.

Mostly enough lip balms to last me years 🙀 but I also risked a concealer from Tir Tir and a couple of blushers and an eye pencil from Daiso.

The three snail masks were a freebie - I am a bit reluctant to use those - may pass onto DSis.

The Shiseido eye cream was a huge bargain on the plane home. (Big shout out to Asiana btw - a brilliant airline!)

I have started using the cute little Fwee lip gel - it’s brilliant and I wish I had bought more. I also got a free Fwee mini volumising lip balm with my purchase.

I sort of lost track of my spending after the first week, but the whole lot cost me less than £150 in total. The Shiseido eye cream was the most single expensive item I bought.

Of course, you have to get to Korea first, but things are so cheap when you do!

I genuinely don’t know where I am going to put it all - I seem to have bought rather a lot and will gift some of it. I will spare you a picture of all the souvenirs I bought, but let’s just say I now have more than enough keyrings, pens, magnets and purses!

BTW: I think my ‘best’ non-skincare/make up souvenirs were glasses cloths, (weird, I know - but so pretty!) and tote bags. I also got a silver necklace from a jewellery maker with my initial in Korean. I am not 100% sure it’s the right one - but it’s very nice.

I love a good vit c but I’m olive/ orange anyway.

My DD is very very pale/pink and accidentally nicked ‘borrowed’ some of my Vit-C and it looked extraordinary on her, like she’d painted her face with builders tea.

OvaHere · 01/11/2025 16:49

@IlovePond that's a great haul. I've got some of the BOH range, some masks, a cream and the spray which is in your first pic.

Those Fwee glosses are good. I also like the pudding pots they do. I think Boots sell them now.

OP posts:
IlovePond · 01/11/2025 16:55

That’s good to know @OvaHere - the Fwee gloss I put on this morning is still in place - really wish I had bought another one! I never saw any more for sale after finding the one standalone Fwee concession in a mall early on in my holiday.

I have put some of the lip products and a blush pot into use for now, but I think I will save the rest of it for next year or beyond as it all has a 2028 expiry date.

DidILeaveTheGasOn · 01/11/2025 16:59

Loving the skincare haul. Storage is once again on my mind after I seem to have spent half term comfort shopping. I have discovered some skincare from the Ordinary that I'd forgotten about (it doesn't seem to do anything and it takes years to dry on my face, am I made out of stone?) So I think I need to address my storage/organisation.

Obviously I've dealt with this conundrum by ordering more skincare. I bought this because of the Rodial bee venom eye cream. I got 10% off with xmas10 so it cost... ten percent less, I don't know, there was wine in the decision-making. This morning I remembered ordering it and suddenly felt guilty for the bees. How can they extract venom in a humane way? Some skincare companies say they irritate the bees with electrolised grids near their hives, causing them to sting onto nearby plate of glass, then the venom is scraped off. They say no bees are harmed. They would say that though right?

Does anyone have any info on this? I've gone from a giddy 'ooh £40 for eye cream that retails at £145' to 'oh no, the bees!'

Talking of The Ordinary/NIOD they've started their 23% off everything event that runs through November (until Dec 7th I think).

@IlovePond that is awsome! And so so cute looking as well. I don't understand how they are so incredibly advanced in skincare in Korea and Japan. Products that actually work for real and not irritate the skin. They must have had a very long solid history of skincare which was not known worldwide? Similar to French products in terms of heritage but only known about in that part if the world until maybe 10 years ago when it all took off everywhere else.

Branster · 01/11/2025 18:34

Ah @DidILeaveTheGasOn ignorant me assumed no real bees were ever involved in the process. Very good point. I can't see how they would harvest the venom without upsetting the bees. It takes a lot of energy and very stressful I would think.
All I can tell you is that snail stuff, apparently, comes from snail farms where snails move across some sort of mesh surface and that's how they collect the slime somehow. Again, with claims that snails are not harmed but who knows?
Moving to silk, I understand silk production is now definitely classed as harmful to silk worms.
This is all in my simple mind, a collection of snippets of information which may or may not be true, no actual research involved on my part.

IlovePond · 01/11/2025 19:02

@Branster and @DidILeaveTheGasOn - I deliberately avoided buying snail/pdrn products in SK, even though I heard from several people that it’s not cruel to the snails because I wasn’t convinced. Now I have those snail mask freebies I don’t know whether to use them or not and snail slime does seem kind of yucky.

Me and DS discussed the use of snail secretions in SK a few times on holiday. We wondered how on earth it came about - did some Korean with dry skin in ancient times see snail slime on the ground and think: ‘Ooh, that would sort out my chapped hands, no problem’. I guess it must have happened something like that!

It’s ubiquitous over there and we even saw it labelled as a vegan product, which was interesting!

I hadn’t thought about the ethics of bee venom, but, like snail products, I have been avoiding because I didn’t like the idea of it.

Branster · 01/11/2025 19:18

@IlovePond someone noticed that snail farmers had nice skin on their hands and explored further. No idea where in the world these snail farmers make a living or how true this legend is.
I first tried a snail gel from Holland & Barratt many many years ago. I can't remember the brand. Never heard of such a thing before so obviously I had to give it a go. It was a gel that absorbed very quickly and did absolutely nothing to my skin. My daughter was very young at the time and was horrified by how disgusting the whole idea was. My son thought it was really weird too but didn't think it was particularly disgusting.

TragicMuse · 01/11/2025 19:20

I don’t care how lovely it might be, I’m not putting snail slime anywhere near me!!

Absolutely not!

IlovePond · 01/11/2025 20:11

That makes sense @Branster I am thinking that if H&B think snail gel is ok, then maybe it’s not cruel for snails.

The idea grosses me out too @TragicMuse I will let you all know if I try out one of the masks.

I may have mentioned before that DS bought me some horse oil from SK last year - containing real horse. I made him throw it away before he left the country!
