i’m wondering if I could style it with black boots (DM Triumph) or alternatively as an overshirt, with a top underneath, buttons mostly undone, with jeans or trousers? I wouldn’t normally put black boots with a brown dress. I like how it looks as is but I know I often default back to jeans (and hate tights!) so might well get more wear from it if I could wear it like a long shirt…

Also generally what is M&S like these days? It’s so long since I had anything from them.

I’d say that particular shape (in at the waist then out) doesn’t generally work well over trousers. It would be fine with a lightweight rollneck (polo neck) underneath. And will probably go with any type of boot.

MidlandsGal1 · 02/10/2025 12:58

I think varying lengths and shades of brown/tan/cream would look good, along with either a polo neck or collared shirt.

Found a couple of inspo pictures that are similar to what I’m imagining.

Thanks both. I’ll keep looking! I do like the dress you posted though @MidlandsGal1 - very 70s!

I tend to think most dresses look fine with DM style boots in the winter. Have you considered leggings underneath? Don't look much different then opaque tights but feel more like trousers.

Although I wouldn't get that dress. Love the fabric and colour but that bust line always makes my boobs look droopy!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/10/2025 18:50

I would wear it with black opaques and black boots.

Although I have cream ribbed tights and light tan ankle boots which would also work I think?

Starwomanwaiting · 02/10/2025 20:56

It looks like something a medieval peasant would wear

Fairy25 · 02/10/2025 20:59

No just no

BettyTurpinPies · 02/10/2025 22:20

I don't like the colour or the shape, and it would look silly with trousers. If you're going to wear a dress as a tunic, go for a tunic style. Try Seasalt.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 02/10/2025 22:25

I hate it, sorry. It’s giving me Baldrick vibes.

StaroftheKentishTown · 03/10/2025 00:02

I think this dress is a dreadful mistake. Sorry. But it’s very frumpy. It might look fun on the 6ft size 6 20 year old model but it will look awful on anyone else. A corduroy dress is very hard to pull off.

DoubtfulCat · 03/10/2025 06:15

I think I’ve gone off it too!

There really should be a note at the top of S&B banning posts that declare that a garment will only suit a 6’, size 6, 20 year old model.

It is the opposite of a beautiful attitude and negates the whole purpose of this board. It’s also wrong in 99.9999% of cases.

(I haven’t bought actual clothes in M&S since the 1990s, don’t like wearing three quarter sleeves, and prefer an entirely different shape in dresses - but even I can see that’s a perfectly acceptable dress in a seasonal colour and fabric which will suit countless people of all shapes and sizes.)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/10/2025 06:56

I agree entirely with sentiment there about only size 6 20 year olds being allowed to wear items, but I don’t think this particular dress would look good on anybody.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/10/2025 06:57

It would still be a fucking horrible garment, even if the most beautiful and slim young woman in the world was wearing it.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/10/2025 07:11

I'm a size 16 and love the shape of the dress, the vneck and 3/4 sleeves would be very flattering on me. I don't suit brown clothing but lots of people do.

I’m not 6ft but I’m size 6-8 and I could not pull that off. If it doesn’t look good on the model it’s unlikely to suit anyone.

😂 I was picturing the plague victims in the cellar in ghosts

BitOutOfPractice · 03/10/2025 10:02

I agree, I think it’s too fitted to work as a shirt. It’s a great dress though (even though I can’t / don’t wear brown).

BettyTurpinPies · 03/10/2025 10:03

@EscapadeVelocity , I agree with you.

I won't wear sleeveless or sleeves that are not to my wrists.
I won't wear dresses that don't have pockets.

The dress itself is OK, and the colour OK but not for me, but I wouldn't wear it because it wouldn't suit me - the shaped bodice, the slightly puff sleeves, the A-line skirt.
I like cotton needlecord dresses.

That’s because it doesn’t fit her!

vincettenoir · 03/10/2025 10:05

I like it, it simple and Autumny. Looks like it would suit someone busty. I wouldn’t leave buttons undone though. It’s too structured and don’t think that would work.

Aluna · 03/10/2025 10:11

BitOutOfPractice · 03/10/2025 10:03

It doesn’t fit her because it doesn’t fit anyone. It’s a terrible shape, terrible material, terrible idea.

EscapadeVelocity · 03/10/2025 10:31

It’s a cheap dress. 🤷‍♀️ I certainly wouldn’t call 100% cotton cord a terrible fabric, though at this price it may be rather thin. (And I haven’t looked at the provenance of the item.)

Only on MN S&B could I find myself suckered into defending an M&S frock! 😂😂😂

In your opinion of course. I like it but it doesn’t suit that model one bit.
