i’m wondering if I could style it with black boots (DM Triumph) or alternatively as an overshirt, with a top underneath, buttons mostly undone, with jeans or trousers? I wouldn’t normally put black boots with a brown dress. I like how it looks as is but I know I often default back to jeans (and hate tights!) so might well get more wear from it if I could wear it like a long shirt…

Also generally what is M&S like these days? It’s so long since I had anything from them.

It's hideous. Shapeless, drab, unflattering, and why has the poor model got trousers under it! And wowsers, £1400.

Clearly though there are people with more money than sense.

TeaRoseTallulah · 04/10/2025 12:04

I really like it, giving proper 70s vibes but the length is wrong for the sleeves and top part.

DoubtfulCat · 04/10/2025 12:42

Thanks for the links to alternatives. I like the OB one but I prefer the price of the M&S one. I guess the answer is to go to a shop and try these things on.
I do quite like the proportions of that long shirt but obviously the price is ridiculous. It’s worth keeping in mind though in case other shops have similar length shirts (although, thinking about it, I’d struggle with my coats if I had a shirt/dress that long).

Dress over trousers is such a cool look!

Though I prefer these proportions:

Yikes.

This makes the original hideous thing look positively beautiful in comparison.

I love the dress you posted. That shape and colour are both very flattering on me. I’d look like a sack of potatoes in the other one. I’d wear yours with brown tights (or I’d more likely just wear it bare legged unless it was really cold) and brown knee boots, a big leopard print scarf (I know leopard print divides people) an orange tote bag and gold jewellery.

Ruthietuthie · 04/10/2025 15:08

The dress looks cheap - corduroy can be a lovely fabric, but it needs to have some weight, but this looks very thin. Plus the cut around the bust seems guaranteed to make anyone's chest look saggy.
The idea is there - chocolate brown corduroy would be lovely for Autumn, particularly with brown boots (that come underneath the skirt, so you don't have an awkward gap that shows the knees), and you could layer underneath with a thin turtleneck top (Cos have a nice one, very thin, but in Merino woo). I also wouldn't put black with brown, it deadens the richness of the color.

Dresses over trousers is a ridiculous look. It’s like wearing tights under shorts.

I think you missed out ‘for me’ there, unless you’re implying that what you prefer is the the only right answer?

BitOutOfPractice · 04/10/2025 16:21

I thought trousers under dresses went out in 2005. Is it back as a Look?

MerveilleduJour · 04/10/2025 16:36

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/10/2025 06:57

It would still be a fucking horrible garment, even if the most beautiful and slim young woman in the world was wearing it.

I have a theory that the point of ugly or shapeless dresses is to draw attention to the physical beauty of the woman wearing them.

Grammarnut · 04/10/2025 16:55

It's too long to wear over jeans, I think. Leggings and ankle boots perhaps?

Oh dear. In that case maybe I shouldn’t be on S&B at all! I’ve been wearing dresses over jeans since about 1999. Perhaps I’m so behind that I’m inadvertently trend-setting?

It’s just for ref, stick on a pair of tights and job done! I was thinking in my head how I’d style it. It’s not hard to imagine a dress worn differently from an image. Almost always I don’t like how websites style their outfits

Sorry ,yes agreed the dress you picked would look great with opaque tights and would work with trousers too.

Grammarnut · 05/10/2025 15:08

BitOutOfPractice · 03/10/2025 10:48

In your opinion of course. I like it but it doesn’t suit that model one bit.

And the boots would not be my choice of footwear with that dress.

For everyone, surely. There’s a reason that fad didn’t last long.

The only version that really works is the shalwar kameez look.

I still see it on other people quite often and wear it too.

I'd like to randomly add a completely different point to this thread, which is that it was so nice to see a model smiling and looking happy (on the original M&S dress).
