i’m wondering if I could style it with black boots (DM Triumph) or alternatively as an overshirt, with a top underneath, buttons mostly undone, with jeans or trousers? I wouldn’t normally put black boots with a brown dress. I like how it looks as is but I know I often default back to jeans (and hate tights!) so might well get more wear from it if I could wear it like a long shirt…

Also generally what is M&S like these days? It’s so long since I had anything from them.

It looks like something a medieval peasant would wear

My first thought was handmaids tale. It’s awful!

Seaside3 · 03/10/2025 10:57

I really like it! I think on the right shape, busy and hourglass, it could look good.

I'd look at snag tights for colour ideas. J could imagine someone with bolder taste than me wearing yellow or burgundy with it.

I'd wear black tights and voots as I do like brown and black as a combo. Under utility I would consider a sleeveless turtle neck. I think if brown as a neutral, so pretty much any colour woukd work.

See here for brown colour combos.

@EscapadeVelocity , the needlecord will be thin. It usually is in shirts and dresses, otherwise there'll be no drape. It will still be quite warm.
I wear needlecord in the summer if it's only mild.

The dress would look summery in s different fabric, but the colour is autumnal.

It's a pleasant dress in its way, looks like a medieval tunic. Would look good with baggy trousers in the same colour to complete the medieval look, but you may have to take up archery.

Thanks. I do have a whimsical part who likes to wear medieval styles sometimes, although my other parts like to add jeans to the outfit if they can! Quite fancy a bow and quiver full of arrows 🤔

There really should be a note at the top of S&B banning posts that declare that a garment will only suit a 6’, size 6, 20 year old model.

100% agreed.

Re the dress, I like shape but not the colour , it's a wishy washy brown, brown should be rich and deep, and definitely not worn over trousers

dumberthanaboxofrocks · 03/10/2025 23:33

I like a big ol pair of 200 denier tights! Like that dress, if it was black I’d be all over it

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/10/2025 00:18

Looks perfectly inoffensive to me. To be worn with thick black tights and boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/10/2025 07:11

Yellow tights?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cuberoot · 04/10/2025 09:48

I like it instead and would buy it and wear it (43, size 16)

But I have a style problem... I only like what I like regardless of whether it's current fashion or not, so I might look stylish or not depending on the fashion cycle point!
Love brown and so happy that's finally back to use it in all shades, black is so boring.

Hi OP, I’ve linked something that would look better with DMs. As the fitted waist on the M&S one wouldn’t work

It's not the shape that's wrong, it's the colour. Brown needs to be deep and rich. The OP's dress looks washed out.

Bare legs and boots on the dress you picked looks terrible.

EscapadeVelocity · 04/10/2025 10:08

I like the styling of the Oliver Bonas dress! The problem with the first one for the OP is that it really wouldn’t look good with trousers. This one would work better like that.

Dress over trousers looks weird. The Oliver Bonas dress would work better if that's the look OP wants.

I think the Oliver Bonas styling looks ridiculous.

Chocolate Brown Corduroy Collared Mini Shirt Dress | Oliver Bonas
I like it and don't think it looks ridiculous at all.

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/10/2025 10:33

It’s ok but any kind of puff detail on a dress even if slight is the issue for me, I think it suits very few people.

I wore a lot of that sort of brown in the 1970’s but it wasn’t my choice as I was a child.

BettyTurpinPies · 04/10/2025 10:41

That PP dress is hideous.

Sparklesandspandexgallore · 04/10/2025 10:48

I like it.
Of course everything looks better on very thin, young women. The same is true for men!
However, none of the 20 something very thin women I know wear dresses, or skirts for that matter.
I like the colour and would wear it with boots as a dress not over trousers.
I buy quite a lot from M&S they have really upped their game.

Edited

It’s just for ref, stick on a pair of tights and job done! I was thinking in my head how I’d style it. It’s not hard to imagine a dress worn differently from an image. Almost always I don’t like how websites style their outfits

How rude.

I like it OP. It's the sort of dress which you could wear in lots of different settings, it's pure cotton not plastic, and a nice autumnal dress. Bargain at £40.

RandomGeocache · 04/10/2025 11:44

That Phoebe Philo dress is a joke post, right?

EscapadeVelocity · 04/10/2025 11:49

Why, do you think Phoebe Philo views her business as a joke?

I was making a point about the proportions I prefer for a dress over trousers, so chose a fairly exaggerated example. No one to is forcing anyone on this thread to buy a Phoebe Philo dress … 🙄

BettyTurpinPies · 04/10/2025 11:49

@RandomGeocache , It looks like something you bought on the sale rail in Zara but never got round to wearing. I wouldn't pay £14.00 for it.
