What’s with the high waist jeans everywhere?

I’ve been looking for jeans and soooo many are high waisted. Why is it so popular? I can’t see the appeal.

I hate low rise, as a pear with a long torso high rise is much better for me. They look great with cropped tees or jumpers that sit just below the waistband.

I can't be doing with untucked tops though, they often just look a bit awkward.

High waisted makes your legs look longer. Also good for those who have a bit of a squishy middle that needs holding in rather than cutting in half.

I have a squishy middle and I think high waist make my mid section look much worse than mid rise. I hate high rise, and have never had an issue with mid rise jeans falling down (and if I did I would wear a belt). If mid rises are cutting you in half they are too small.

CameForAVacationStayedForTheRevolution · 19/09/2025 07:41

I’ve never had an issue with normal jeans showing my arse crack or pants 🤷🏻‍♀️😁. Most of the jeans I own I don’t think specified a rise so I assume are mid rise. They sit on my waist and stay there. High rise seem to be above my waist with an expanse of fabric which is often a bit baggy even when the jeans fit everywhere else.

supercalifragilistic123 · 19/09/2025 07:48

I love high rise! It keeps everything tucked nicely in. I wear a lot of cropped tops or boxy t shirts with mine.

I would never wear low rise again. I have too many wobbly bits.

Plumcorkyduff · 19/09/2025 07:49

I’m a short arse size 12 with a short torso and have just spent an hour on Vinted looking for low rise jeans. High rise jeans make me look like a cricket bat. Bring back low rise!

HannahHamptonsGloves · 19/09/2025 07:54

Low rise are well and truly back among the teens. Check out Bottoms - Tracksuit Pants | Hollister Co. www.hollisterco.com/shop/uk/womens-bottoms?categoryId=166330&facet=productCategories%3A%28%22Jeans%22%29&filtered=true&rows=90&start=0 Hollister's denim right now - it's like it's 1997 🤣

Although I do have some high rise jeans I don't think the suit me that well. I am short and not hugely hourglass/pear shaped so I don't have a small waist compared to my hips, and I look fatter from the side than I do from the front (if that makes sense) so high rise makes my lower stomach look bigger and can cut into me.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 19/09/2025 07:58

High rise feel comfortable. However, I’m a size 14 with a c-section pouch so I look like Tweedle-fucking-dum in them 😡

otherthoughtssareavailable · 19/09/2025 08:01

I hate high rise - they don’t hold anything in, they just make me look rotund! Even my skinny-as-can-be teen DD says that high rise give her a tummy that she doesn’t have.

There are some low rise about but they’re quite hard to find. Rest assured though that they are not the low rise of old. I have a pair from 00’s that I’ve resurrected since losing weight and DD marvels at how they have to be worn with the right pants to spare modesty. Modern low rise is probably what we used to call mid rise, but I’ve found them online at Levi’s & Zara and actually got some in store at Hollister - none are too revealing 😀

HellsBells13 · 19/09/2025 08:03

As I am 5ft 2ins with a high waist and long legs for my height (31inches inside leg), I can tell you high waist jeans are not a good look on me. Think Of Family Guy 'All The Way Up Griffin'.

wearyourpinkglove · 19/09/2025 06:58

I'm not a big fashion person but I thought high waist have been around for a long time and the low ones are coming back! I might be wrong! I prefer something in the middle personally so I'm glad I've found some mid rise!

When you wear your pink glove. Do you put it on the wrong way?

Idstillratherbepaddleboarding · 19/09/2025 08:21

I agree, if you want low rise, you need to shop where the teenagers are shopping! Although they tend to be baggy jeans. I’m loving my teenage style being back in, DS is not and accuses me of “dressing like a teenager” but I tell him it was my style first and I’m keeping it 😂.

bigwhitedog · 19/09/2025 08:25

I live in fear of low rise being all that's available again. I didn't wear trousers for the majority of my life, had to live in dresses and skirts. It was boring and cold. Long live the high rise!

TheFlis · 19/09/2025 08:42

As someone with a narrow rib cage but large boobs high rise are awful on me, anything tucked in makes my chest look huge and matronly.

You can still get mid rise jeans fairly easily, but you'll struggle to get low rise jeans that aren't vintage.
High rise and mid rise are definitely the fashion now for quite a while.

What sort of shape are you looking for

KateMiskin · 19/09/2025 08:53

I have a squashy stomach and wear high waisted jeans. I don't tuck in my top. I wear boxy tops that hit at the top of my jeans or slightly below.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/09/2025 08:58

This is my moment!
Long torso, squidgy middle, dumpy legs.
2005-2020 was a barren time on the jeans front for me!!

supergraphicultramoderngirllikeme · 19/09/2025 08:59

I’m 5’10 and size 8 with no tummy and high rise make me look about 2 stone heavier. SO unflattering on me. My teens wouldn’t be seen dead in hi-rise, low rise are definitely on their way back in amongst the young, which means they’ll be back in our shops within 18 months (I fervently hope so anyway!)

NeartoNewquay · 19/09/2025 09:01

Agree with pps - my 17yr old DD and all her friends are in low rise - you need to look at Bershka, Hollister and Urban Outfitters.

honeylulu · 19/09/2025 09:23

I hope mid rise are coming back, it's the only type that works for me. High rise make me look like I have a distended abdomen and long flat arse! And I have quite a thick waist compared to my relatively slim hips so if they fit my legs and bum the waist feels too tight.

dollyblue01 · 19/09/2025 09:26

PosiePerkinPootleFlump · 19/09/2025 07:01

I also look crap in them as a long legged short torso person.
I thought the end was in sight as my 17 year old and her friends all stopped wearing high waisted jeans over a year ago…but maybe not.

I’m the same very long legs and short torso and they look ridiculous on me, I’ll have to pass on this style and wait for the next.

wearyourpinkglove · 19/09/2025 12:32

@Boohoolol it's hard to believe that you go for that stuff all the baby doll nighties and synthetic fluff 😂 (sorry to derail the thread OP)!

MrsSkylerWhite · 19/09/2025 12:33

Love a high waist. So much more comfortable than low rise. Women have waists.

Not all of us do! I think that is where my problem lies - my hips aren't that much wider than my waist so a high waist jean that fits my hips/bum just slices me in half, but if they fit my waist then I might as well be wearing giant clown pants.
