Cashmere twinset - yay or nay?

Boden has some cashmere jumpers & cardigans this season in colours that really suit me ( leaf green melange and mocha). A bonus being 15% off atm.
I'm late 50s, size 12/14, hourglass with large chest.
I love the idea of a twinset, but worry it would look dated. I probably like it because I wore similar decades ago.
I'm talking about a round neck jumper and cardigan.
Do I size up to look more current?? Or is it just a no?
I want to finally start buying myself nice things and want longevity. Simple is good. I like plain, uncluttered, semi-fitted. I am very (too) casual most of the time ( but want to up my game with good use of colour, texture etc). I don't need to worry about work clothes.
I don't like being cold, so double cashmere sounds lush!

I used to love a twin set in the 90s and I'm not far off your age. I think they are classic and if you get the right style you can't go far wrong.

Gettingbysomehow · 15/09/2025 10:56

I love a twin set. Im in my 60s.

neveradmit17 · 15/09/2025 10:57

I love twin sets!

Cbamuch · 15/09/2025 11:00

I can't see them on their website but initial thoughts are no. They've had their day.

You are wrong, they are very much back in vogue

flatfelled · 15/09/2025 11:42

@Cbamuch they aren't styled on the website as twinsets, but there are matching cardigans and jumpers. I like the idea of doubling up ( I feel the cold) as well as wearing as separates. I think a lot of the appeal is finding colours that are perfect for me. I love autumn clothes!
@Lifeinthepit yup, definitely harking back to me in the 90s. Not sure I'll be going for kitten heels this time round ( altho' they are having a moment too. Not sure my feet would cope!).

I've got a big bust and look matronly in them, but on a more slight person with great jewellery and jeans, very nice indeed.

ChelseaDetective · 15/09/2025 12:18

Love the look of a cashmere twinset. I don’t suit them as I’ve got very broad, rounded shoulders but they’ll never be unstylish even if you don’t see many around. I live near Johnstons of Elgin and love walking round their on site shops, full of cashmere twinsets.

I wouldn’t size up to make it more ‘current’ - especially with a larger bust as the jumper will likely be too wide at the shoulder, hang at the front and look messy with the cardi. Its a classic look and I’d be inclined to keep it that way.

What are you thinking of wearing on your bottom half?

flatfelled · 15/09/2025 12:18

@Chewbecca I too can veer towards matronly. I'm fairly petite ( despite the size 14 and bust) so think I can get away with it.

Defo do it, if the look suits you. Warm, stylish, and on trend this autumn.

LaurieFairyCake · 15/09/2025 12:23

I think they’re really in vogue at the moment, LOVE the leaf green melange. Seriously considering buying it though I’m not supposed to be buying more jumpers 🤦‍♀️!

flatfelled · 15/09/2025 12:47

@ChelseaDetective that's really helpful styling advice, thanks. I've got a long denim straight skirt which I think would work. Jeans, altho bit bored of jeans atm.On the lookout for some winter trousers. Possibly pleated. Possibly wool. Want to add some textural interest.

What is a twin set? Is it like a co-ord?

UpMyself · 15/09/2025 13:35

Twinset - Wikipedia @TheGreatWesternShrew

Halfy · 15/09/2025 13:35

I think a twinset with wide legged jeans looks good

I’m mid fifties, short and a size 12/14 too, but broad shouldered with a small bust.

I’d really lean into the country house look and wear a long kilt style skirt with leather straps and ankle boots or a pair of tweed or fine wool culottes with socks and big shoes.

Personally if I’d gone to the effort of choosing a style statement like a twin set I wouldn’t settle on jeans or a denim skirt. Denim (in my opinion) isn’t a neutral and doesn’t go with everything.

flatfelled · 15/09/2025 14:30

@ChelseaDetective love the kilt idea. Not sure I'm brave enough for tweed culottes! I need to have a shopping trip to try on some new shapes & styles.
Like a lot of women, changing bodyshape, lifestyle etc has left me struggling to find my way. I'd like to experiment a bit more. I might find tweed culottes are my new favourite thing!

@flatfelled I hear you. I’m 54 and getting dressed is suddenly harder from a physical point of view than it used to be.

It doesn’t help that there’s so little variety available on the high street, I go and never find anything. I suppose it was always that way but we made do instead of being able to go online and find different things!

I get the reservation about culottes. I think I may have laughed the first time I saw a tweed suit with culottes but now its one of my favourite outfits.

Mine are from Jack Murphy but with a twin set I’d try these from Poetry available in three colours.

I remember having a couple of Jigsaw twinsets in the 90s. I always thought they looked classy with wide legged trousers

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 15/09/2025 16:06

I bought some bonkers pleated 100% wool trousers in grey from M&S Autograph that would work with a twin set Can’t link from phone though

Thingyfanding · 15/09/2025 16:09

It’s a classic look - It really never goes out of style.

ChelseaDetective · 15/09/2025 16:32

Yes, a twinset and flowing wide legs would be lovely. Those look like the sort of thing you’d walk straight past in M&S but look good on.

Really enjoying all the new trouser shapes that seem to be coming out for winter.

damemaggiescurledupperlip · 15/09/2025 17:21

Them's the ones! Thanks UpMyself
