Is this dress too pale for a black tie wedding?

I'm going to a wedding in October which has a black tie dress code. I've bought this beautiful Adrianna Papell dress off Vinted and it fits me amazingly but now I'm worried it's too pale! It's a kind of grey/sage green colour.

I can’t see the colour properly but if it’s safe it’s probably not too pale, but it does look a bit like a wedding dress.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/09/2025 13:11

Looks fine to me. Maybe go for darker rather than lighter accessories of you’re worried.

MageQueen · 01/09/2025 13:13

In the picture, that looks like it could be a wedding dress frankly. But then, in the picture, it looks like its off white. if its genuinely sage green, then it's fine.

it's very beautiful and you probably have a bit of leeway because of the black tie dress code, but I'd be hesitant. do you know the bride well enough to get a sense of what she's wearing?

ScrollingLeaves · 01/09/2025 13:13

Emphasise that you are not ‘wearing white’ with a non light necklace perhaps.

ScrollingLeaves · 01/09/2025 13:14

Dark green necklace, shoes, and bag?

DameWishalot · 01/09/2025 13:15

As it’s October, I’d make sure I accessorised that with a dark stole/wrap of some sort - if you could get one in a dark green that enhanced the green of the dress (so it looks like white/cream) that would be ideal.

heroinechic · 01/09/2025 13:15

When these kind of posts come up I usually think the dress is inappropriate, but this is fine IMO!

Blacktiedresshelp · 01/09/2025 13:24

Here are some more photos of the colour close up in the light - I'm still feeling really on the fence! 😬

I just don’t think it’s a black tie dress, regardless of colour. Whilst it may be a long dress, the fabric and embellishments look cheap and nasty and the flounces make it look very bridesmaid-like (and not in a good way).

Would you actually wear this to a black tie event?!

Sorry OP, just being honest.

You make a convincing argument. Could you post some suggestions? ( Interested too.)

Ouch 😬 the RRP of the dress is somewhere around £200 so I'm a bit disappointed to hear it looks cheap. I am genuinely asking - I've never been to a black tie event before. I bought this thinking it fit the bill but maybe it's best if I sell it on and look for something a bit safer.

OP, I think @HundredMilesAnHour is being unfair. The dress does not look cheap to me at all and I think it would be perfectly fine for a black tie event, partciularly a wedding. it's a very romantic dress so not for everyone. But that doesn't mean it's not appropraite for you.

I Do worry about the colour but in the second picture it does look more grey in which case I think with the right accessories, it would be fine.

Doggymummar · 01/09/2025 14:02

Regardless of the occasion being a wedding, it doesn't seem black tie to me. I always think velvet and satin for black tie, but I'm very traditional. That dress looks quite nice for a beach wedding in the sun.

PrincessofWells · 01/09/2025 14:07

Op it's a lovely dress, perfect for any black tie occasion and doesn't look cheap.

If you think it isn't quite right, consider having it taken up to mid calf length, or as pp said wear it with a dark green stole.

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 01/09/2025 14:10

I don't think it looks black tie either. I'd go for a darker colour.

KOALABEAR12 · 01/09/2025 14:12

Looks too bridal, and not a black tie dress - sorry

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 01/09/2025 14:16

It's not my cup of tea but yes it's suitable for a black event and no it's not too pale.

I wouldn't wear it but I've seen dresses like it at black tie events.

FairyBatman · 01/09/2025 14:16

I think it would be fine for any black tie event that’s not a wedding but it’s too pale and in the wrong light and in photos would look too bridal.

Noominia · 01/09/2025 14:21

I agree that this doesn’t really look black tie wedding. It’s a bit too prom-looking imo.

Reading this and looking at your photo again I’d say this is a genius idea! I’d have the frill layer taken off or keep about 3” then 1920s mid-heel shoes with dark green stole as suggested. If it fits so well I’d work with it - maybe even asymmetric if you trust your tailor?

Blacktiedresshelp · 01/09/2025 14:24

I think I'll resell and look for something else! Thanks for all your replies everyone. Should I steer clear of sequins all together? I'll look for something velvet and in a darker colour I think

It's a beautiful dress but to me it does look like slightly unconventional wedding dress.

It's definitely suitable for a black tie event though.

Sidebeforeself · 01/09/2025 14:26

I think it’s the frill at the bottom that makes it look cheap…bit like a nightie! I just think there are much nicer dresses out there. Why risk looking “bridal” when there are so many designs available?

GleisZwei · 01/09/2025 14:27

It looks bridal imho.
