Is this dress too pale for a black tie wedding?

I'm going to a wedding in October which has a black tie dress code. I've bought this beautiful Adrianna Papell dress off Vinted and it fits me amazingly but now I'm worried it's too pale! It's a kind of grey/sage green colour.

Is this dress too pale for a black tie wedding?

Beautiful dress but I wouldn’t wear to a wedding. It’s too bride/bridesmaid for me

WildCherryBlossom · 01/09/2025 14:31

I think it’s beautiful and would definitely work for a black tie wedding. If it fits beautifully and you feel great in it, do wear it!

zebrastripesarefun · 01/09/2025 14:33

What a beautiful dress. Love the colour too. I would wear it with no hesitation at all. Enjoy !

Travellingmouse · 01/09/2025 14:39

It’s a gorgeous dress but it is too wedding like for a black tie wedding .

clotheslinefiasco · 01/09/2025 14:46

It's a beautiful dress and looks perfect for a 'black tie' event!

It does not look cheap or anything like a wedding dress.

Enjoy the event 🙂

TheSandgroper · 01/09/2025 14:47

It’s in desperate need of a belt. I’m not a fan of the gathering being so obvious. Look for a contrasting colour and matching earrings, clutch and stole/pashmina to make it less bridesmaidy. Find the fabric and then find a dressmaker. And, yes, I would lose the bottom frill but that’s personal opinion.

clotheslinefiasco · 01/09/2025 14:49

Sidebeforeself · 01/09/2025 14:26

I think it’s the frill at the bottom that makes it look cheap…bit like a nightie! I just think there are much nicer dresses out there. Why risk looking “bridal” when there are so many designs available?

Really??

I could not disagree with you more.

It looks nothing like a nightie -

ViciousCurrentBun · 01/09/2025 14:54

Not this exact dress but my sister wore something that was pale sage green with an overlay and embroidery that was very similar in 2023 as the Bride, second marriage after being widowed. I made her bouquet, white roses and sea thistles.

It’s too bridesmaid like, very pretty.

Blacktiedresshelp · 01/09/2025 14:59

Thanks again for the further replies. I think I can't wear the dress in good conscience given my own concerns regarding the colour (even though the majority in the poll feel it's not too pale). I'll resell and look for something more suitable. Should I try to avoid sequins all together? I am thinking of looking for something velvet, probably navy blue or black

I meant the bottom of it makes it look like a nightie..not the whole thing

I think I'll resell and look for something else! Thanks for all your replies everyone. Should I steer clear of sequins all together? I'll look for something velvet and in a darker colour I think

I like this dress. It’s not for everyone but can look really pretty on the right person.
This dress may not be appropriate for a low key wedding but if you are going to a bigger party and bride likes to dress up glamorously, in that case it’s not over the top dress.

Franpie · 01/09/2025 15:15

Black tie refers to the colour and suit the men need to wear, not the women. Typically for women it just means evening gown. You can wear whatever colour you want.

I think the dress is beautiful and wouldn’t hesitate to wear it.

BauhausOfEliott · 01/09/2025 15:16

It's fine for black-tie appropriate dresses to be pale in colour. That's a completely appropriate dress for a black tie wedding.

Yes avoid sequins or anything too fancy that can make it look cheap

darker and simpler (with open neck as opposed to this one )

Something like this, but maybe full length, burgundy is the colour of this season.

Try searching Vinted for long burgundy evening dresses

madaboutpurple · 02/09/2025 09:34

I reckon it is wonderful.

EscapadeVelocity · 02/09/2025 10:20

As you’ve decided against keeping it I have to admit it’s vile. Everything @HundredMilesAnHour said - to me it looks like something you’d find in the costume box of a local am dram society. But I’ve never seen a single acceptable thing from that brand, and I’m flummoxed by how often they’re recommended here.

Them and Gina Bacconi. Both terrible.

owlexpress · 02/09/2025 18:26

Is the bride either American or under 40 and uses social media? I think black tie is often used now as shorthand to mean glamorous/evening wear. Technically 'black tie' has a specific etiquette, but unless you're going to an event with people in specific circles, I'd be surprised if that's what they actually mean.

Depending on what you bought the dress for id consider keeping it if it suits you so well. I'm sure you'll find an occasion. If you want to describe the venue etc more we might be able to find some suggestions.

ViciousCurrentBun · 03/09/2025 21:29

@KOALABEAR12 I have no need for that dress from Hobbs currently but it is gorgeous and would suit my skin tone.

Wildfairy · 03/09/2025 21:45

I don’t think thr colour is the issue, it’s just really quite dated, and bit much for a wedding, more bridesmaid type, but a very old fashioned one.

if I was going to a black tie wedding, I’d wear something like this.

if you really like sage, something like this is a more modern take and much more elegant,

OopsieeDaisy · 03/09/2025 22:17

It looks a little too bridal IMO. I don’t think sequins are an automatic no-go however, I wore a silver sequinned Ro&Zo dress to a black tie event recently and it was perfect!

HermioneWeasley · 03/09/2025 22:19

Does it come with a white tulle headdress?

CaroleLandis · 03/09/2025 22:21

I like the dress but I don’t think it’s suitable for a black tie event.

Reading this and looking at your photo again I’d say this is a genius idea! I’d have the frill layer taken off or keep about 3” then 1920s mid-heel shoes with dark green stole as suggested. If it fits so well I’d work with it - maybe even asymmetric if you trust your tailor?

Making it shorter would make it less black tie not more no? The main thing that’s black tie about it is the floor length!
