City break with new boyfriend after divorce - help!

lifeafterdivorce · 17/08/2025 06:43

I’ve just booked a city break in late September with a new partner. we’ve been seeing each other since January, but it’s the first relationship I’ve had after divorce, and the first new relationship for 20 years!! It’s been going very well but a holiday together feels like a big landmark and I’d like to look nice (and more importantly, feel good).

I’m 45, size 12, pear shaped, long back and short legs. I’m looking for one or two dresses that I feel great in, and one or two lovely tops that would work with wide leg trousers. Budget is flexible but ideally under £200 total. My usual shops are Cos, Uniqlo, Sweaty Betty

Boat neck and v neck shapes suit me, and green and blues are by far my most flattering colours. I usually wear navy as a neutral (though oddly after a lifetime of avoiding black as it drains me, I’ve recently started wearing it - would definitely consider a black dress or tops for evening). I like fabrics that feel good - soft or silky, fluffy wools, nice textures. Dresses need to drape or have some structure - nothing that clings, no lightweight jersey. It all needs to be fairly casual - footwear will be trainers or leather sandals.

its a city break in Europe and temperatures could be anything from 15-25 so nothing too lightweight. There will be lots of walking but also nice meals out. Also lots of time in the hotel room but I’m not worried about that bit - it’s dressing for outside where I need help!

I want to look relaxed but stylish, casually well dressed but not too middle aged. And not too glamorous as has to be consistent with my personality and normal life (dog walking, gardening, trousers and Birkenstocks rather than satin maxis and heels). Thinking Jo Whiley or Zoe Ball!

(also, I’d prefer to buy new I think - I do use Vinted but have had more failures than successes. I’d love specific item recommendations rather than categories (‘silk shirt’) if possible. Even better if it’s something you’ve tried - eg a dress that you’ve bought that you feel fabulous in. I’ve got a hankering for a lovely knit dress in soft wool but it needs to be very flattering on the tummy area!

sorry it’s a very broad question but would love some help!!

You mentioned Sezane - i have recently purchased from there and love what i have had.

The Pippa dress - comes in mini or maxi, can be dressed up or down i think. the wrap tie front is very flattering (as i know you mentioned no jersey- but this is nice thick quality and well cut jersey style)...

Might be worth a look. :-)

Pippa Dresses: mini & maxi | Womenswear | Sézane

That dress looks really versatile. Hush have done one similar in the past that I always miss in the sale.

lifeafterdivorce · 18/08/2025 17:05

@GofE I saw that dress and discounted it as I thought the jersey might be too lightweight. It's very interesting to know that you think it's well cut as the shape looks very flattering. What is the sizing like?

Also, I've never ordered from Sezane before. Are there any customs charges in ordering from France?

Can’t advise on clothes as live in jeans but very envious of your trip! Have fun!

sansou · 18/08/2025 19:01

I bought this broderie cotton blouse recently in the sale and it looks great in RL and can be dressed up easily or down.

Another one of my recent sale buys Plumo knit. Runs large - I have a previous year version in blue which I love so happy to buy in red this year. Good for autumn too.

Fairly true to size I think. No other charges. They have a shop in London too. The fabric isn’t too thick, but isn’t cheap clingy jersey. Nice midweight fabric. If between sizes I’d be tempted to go for the larger size as you can pull the waist in with the tie to a degree.
I also have a shirt from there too. They seem very high quality.

ooh thank you @EllatrixB very helpful suggestions. The Hush and Wyse tops are definitely the kind of thing I would wear. I am currently looking at this Suzanne top, which seems dressy enough for evening but casual enough for my general? https://www.sezane.com/en-en/product/abelia-blouse/black#size-12. Jumpsuits don't work for my shape (long back) and I find them a bit awkward to wear in in-between weather where might need a coat.

I would love dress ideas, though I don't really know what I want!! Something casual and easy to wear, yet also flattering?

Thanks for the INPO suggestion @Chewbecca - it's really helpful to see outfits on someone that is closer to my size than a Sezane model!

And I do appreciate your point @Gall10 but I have plenty of self-worth (and a lot more of it since I started dating someone who is nice to me, unlike my ex-husband). It's just nice to have come through the other side of a painful divorce and be looking forward to a fun few days away - I want to enjoy dressing up a bit more than usual and feeling good in my clothes (and yes, having someone else tell me that I look good in them). That's all!

Absolutely love the Sezane top, would be nice with wide leg jeans and your sandals IMO.
I think I have a similar shape to you and like this type of dress shape www.stories.com/en-gb/product/draped-sleeveless-midi-dress-dark-brown-1224243024/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=FF~_CN~pmax_AN~otherstories_PR~mix_MK~gb_PL~google-ads_TT~generic_CU~gpg_PH~conversion&utm_content=nonbrand&utm_id=21018399729&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=21028538041&gbraid=0AAAAADCHX8EzJip8Ki063af5s5i8ExiXD&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3PG2o4GVjwMVoJJQBh2OGQdpEAQYAyABEgKKO_D_BwE

No customs in sezane and pretty easy to do returns. But in my experience sizing and quality is all over the place. Tops and jumpers tend to be huge in my experience. Dresses etc vary hugely. If you read carefully they usually say whether you should size up or down.

Sezane used to great quality when they first started. Now not so much. Very hot and miss. Last year I bought a lovely cottton and linen mix dress with cotton lining. Recently had to return a dress that looked great on the website but cut and fabric was terrible. But I guess most brands are very hit and miss now.

Please don’t dress to please a man…..dress to please yourself! Self-worth is the most important attribute a woman can have. If you have self-worth you’ll have self-confidence…..there’s nothing more sexy than that!
Enjoy your time away…Hope you have a fantastic time.!

In fairness, she’s had years of no interest, no partner to get a reaction from. It affected confidence and self worth
wanting to get positive response and a sexual frisson is normal and legitimate in a relationship, whether that’s same sex or man and woman
She choosing her outfit ,it’s not him imposing a particular style. She wants to look like his hot partner knowing he’ll appreciate it
That is totally normal

Why not dress to "please a man", or to feel a bit special?

If I make a nice meal, am I "cooking to please guests"? Or if I buy a gift, am I "choosing to please a friend"?!

Justsomethoughts23 · 18/08/2025 19:53

Love the green dress you’ve chosen, OP. Also loved the second brown Massimo one someone else posted.

This is nice IRL and also comes in pale blue and black.

I don’t know…only you can answer that!
personally I’d never dress to ‘please a man’

Sezanne style white blouse

Large collar white blouse

Checked blouse

excited for you @lifeafterdivorce ! I know you wanted dresses but I also love Sezanne and thought it worth sharing the above:

Tu have some decent knock offs also with a Ganni / & Other Stories vibe (and lots of great stuff at the moment)

I bought 3 blouses this week; ignore their basic styling; the fabrics are lovely and great fits.

The broderie anglaise would be lovely with jeans & sandals.

What’s your colouring? As in hair, eyes etc. I’ve got a few ideas but they come in specific shades!

Oh good call. I want to do that one day, when I've saved up! To freshen up my Hush wardrobe 😆

Sounds really exciting and hope you have a lovely time!
I'm a similar age and size to you. Am a big fan of Seasalt dresses and tops - dress that might work is -Veronica Jersey Midi Dress - Printed Summer Style - Seasalt Cornwall https://share.google/amGUKCpyGBfgn84sd
Can easily be layered up with a cardigan/jacket as needed. Whilst I'm not the biggest fan of leggings, I do find them invaluable to layer with dresses with if it gets chilly. Though could even wear this dress with tights if needed.
Also, if you have a pair of trousers that work well on you, just find a variety of different tops to go with them. This saves on packing and the top is the bit that will be noticed!
