Do you tell people where you bought something from?

Obviously if they ask, I don’t mean going up to random strangers and telling them I got my top from New Look

I bought a jumpsuit suit from Fat Face a few weeks and have worn it a few times and have had a few compliments on it and a couple of people have asked where it came from.

I was out with a friend last night and a woman asked me where I’d got it from so I told her.

Friend was like why would you tell her? I never tell people.

I always tell people if I can remember, especially as in this case the shop is about 3 doors up from the bar we were in and is currently in their window.

Your friend's attitude is weird imo. Why wouldn't you tell people?

NotrialNodeal · 05/08/2025 12:27

Yes I tell them. I think it's very weird to take the same attitude as your friend. I hope someone comes along and explains why someone wouldn't. As I can't understand why!

AnAudacityofinlaws · 05/08/2025 12:31

I had a friend like this. No way would she tell you where she got an item you admired. Her tactic was first to change the subject then if you asked again just blank the question. It was because she didn’t want you to possibly have something that you might look better in than her. Bizarre really, but she was a very selfish, vain and greedy person.

smallsilvercloud · 05/08/2025 12:38

Sometimes I’ve been vague, if it’s a very cheap item or very expensive, I don’t want the judgement. I’d also never ask someone where they got it from.

Springersrock · 05/08/2025 12:42

I find it very odd. Like we’re gate keeping clothes now?

Maybe if it’s some item of limited edition, couture, fancy clothing I could understand I guess.

Weird.

wtf? Why would you not?! 😂
To be fair, my clothes are almost all via Vinted so I’ll say where they were from originally then also point out how cheap they were on Vinted 😂 so proud of my bargains!

Comefromaway · 05/08/2025 12:45

Of course I'd tell them. Especially if it was a bargain.

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 05/08/2025 12:47

I always tell people, my wardrobe is so varied answers vary from Supermarket and primark to handmade in Greece or Max Mara etc. I’m also the kind of person who can’t help following up with 70% off in the M&S sale etc 🙈

lalaloopyhead · 05/08/2025 12:47

I am always happy to tell someone, not sure why your friend wouldn't?
What does she say when asked?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/08/2025 12:50

I have a light fitting that is genuinely admired constantly. It sold out, mine was the last one and I can’t even find the website now! It frustrates me that I can’t give a straight answer as to where it was from because I actually don’t know and it makes me feel rude.

Clothes, happy to tell anyone, bit weird not to.

DeLaRuiz · 05/08/2025 12:52

Your friend is being very odd. Why on earth wouldn’t she share the info? What’s she got to lose?!

TokyoSushi · 05/08/2025 12:52

Yes of course, if it was a friend I'd probably send them a link!

Denimrules · 05/08/2025 12:54

If I was at a swanky do and wearing the scarf/pashmina/wrap I picked up in Primark at a reduced price and labelled 'beach wrap' I might just stick to the truthful but incomplete 'oh, I've had this for years' 🤣 But generally it's one of the bargains I like admitting to.

Same applies to the coatigan I got from the unlikely and unstylish shop Country Casuals and the broderie anglais jacket from Bon Marche. Joy of the stylish bargain from an unexpected source only works with those who dont turn their noses up.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/08/2025 12:57

One of the items I most got asked about was from Matalan ! No shyness here !

You sound like me!! Sainsbury' top, skirt from a market seller in tenerife, Max Mara coat, Gucci shoes and a 20 year old cardigan from a Debenhams!

I’ve never been with her when she’s been asked.

I asked her why she wouldn’t tell someone and she just said she just doesn’t want loads of people having the same thing as her. 🫤

I don’t always remember where I got something from and I sometimes cut labels out as they’re annoying so sometimes I genuinely don’t know but if I do know, I’m happy to share.

I have a cushion at home that I’ve been asked about a few times. I’ve had it years, I can’t remember where it came from and I can’t find the order confirmation in my email either which is annoying, but if I could remember, I’m happy to share.

Yes, I do. My last compliment was a dress I purchased from Sainsbury also. There’s a lot of love for Sainsbury clothes on this thread!

BitOutOfPractice · 05/08/2025 13:05

I always say if asked. If it was a bargain I tell them that too.

I got asked about my trousers today. I genuinely can’t remember - they are 15 years old at least - but I’ll let my friend know when I can look at the label.

Sunshineofyourlove · 05/08/2025 13:10

Could you link to the jumpsuit, please? 😄

lalalalalady · 05/08/2025 13:12

Yes I always tell people without them having to ask!
them: “I like your shoes!”
me: “oh thank you! They’re from office” for example.

once my DM asked me why I always tell people where things are from and should keep it secretive so they think it’s more expensive than it is, bizarre 😂

Bluetoothpaste · 05/08/2025 13:14

I asked her why she wouldn’t tell someone and she just said she just doesn’t want loads of people having the same thing as her

Unless she is buying/making one off pieces then that is hysterical!!

My very stylish friend is like this. Never ever
tells me where she gets her clothes from. No idea why. 🤣

SoftPillow · 05/08/2025 13:22

I would always tell people, of course.

Remind me of my MIL who never shares recipes (or if she is forced to she will change it so it doesn’t come out the same) as ‘they might serve it to your friends before you can, and claim that it’s theirs’. Bonkers.
