Do you tell people where you bought something from?

Obviously if they ask, I don’t mean going up to random strangers and telling them I got my top from New Look

I bought a jumpsuit suit from Fat Face a few weeks and have worn it a few times and have had a few compliments on it and a couple of people have asked where it came from.

I was out with a friend last night and a woman asked me where I’d got it from so I told her.

Friend was like why would you tell her? I never tell people.

I always tell people if I can remember, especially as in this case the shop is about 3 doors up from the bar we were in and is currently in their window.

All the things I get compliments on are from Shein. I am not afraid to say it.

Timeforabitofpeace · 05/08/2025 13:45

Yes. It’s mean spirited not to.

I’ve been known to say, “Oh, I think it was from TK Max” just to avoid the whole Shein shaming thing.

I don't know, but I bought the red jumpsuit

I just say 'vinted'. It's true 90% of the time.

Sainsbury’s ten quid

Your friend's being weird. What would she do? Lie? Say 'Sorry, not telling you'?! How odd.

Half the time I tell people before they've even asked! If someone says 'I love that dress' I'll often tell them straight off where I got it from, especially if it was a bargain. I really don't mind if someone goes out and buys the same thing as me.

WearyAuldWumman · 05/08/2025 14:21

I tell people if they ask...but I recall having a couple of uncomfortable situations at work as a result, when I was a young teacher.

I was complimented on a blouse back in the '80s and asked where I got it. "Littlewoods," I replied.

Deathly silence. God bless her, a HoD from another department broke the silence by saying "I wish that I could find nice things like that in Littlewoods."

A few years later, I had an absolute b*tch of a HoD. I'd bought a Chanel type suit in an M&S sale - as much as I could afford on my wage, with my mortgage.

For once, I looked pretty good. I got lots of compliments and a couple of people asking if I had an interview. (I guess that shows how scruffy I normally was?)

HoD: "Oh, M&S is all right if it's just for work."

Complete cow. When she heard that we were getting inspected, she went off sick with stress the next day and got early retirement.

I'm 65 now and wouldn't allow someone to put me down like that these days. Most of my clothes are by George...

Same here

If someone says they like my top or whatever, I’m usually like “oh, thanks, it was only a tenner in the sale from H&M”

I’ve never been with her when she’s been asked so I don’t know what she says. I’ll keep my ears peeled and report back.

@BauhausOfEliott I'm exactly the same. I'm more likely to tell them where it is from and how much it cost (if it was a bargain) than to randomly gatekeep the information.

Them: "I love your coat."
Me: "Thank you! It was a fiver in the Cancer Research charity shop" 🤣

The only reason I can see for being a bit vague is if something is very expensive and high end designer and you don't want to share that you're wearing an £800 dress for example. But even then I think it would be weird to be cagey about it so you'd need some stock reply that you've had it years and can't remember or it was a present or it's from Vinted or whatever.

Your friend's attitude that she doesn't want people wearing the same stuff as her is bizarre. Particularly since the item in question was from FatFace and thousands will be sold!

The FatFace sale is on at the moment by the way and excellent. I picked up three things in my local store this morning.

Your friend's attitude is weird imo. Why wouldn't you tell people?

so weird

I tell where it’s from, what I paid, if there is a coupon code….why not, especially if someone has complimented me

purplecorkheart · 05/08/2025 14:26

Yes I have no problem telling people if I remember where I got something. I cannot see why people would not.

ThePoshUns · 05/08/2025 15:21

I do. I have a dress I bought in Peacocks about 3 years ago and you can guarantee every time I wear it someone will ask where it is from. It was such a bargain!

henlake7 · 05/08/2025 15:24

I dont think I can recall anybody ever asking me where I got things from. But if someone says they like something I'll tell them.
I happily share Vinted or sales bargains and will also share if its tragically unfashionable because I just dont care (like the linen trousers I recently got from Bon Marche...I love them!).

the5percentclub · 05/08/2025 15:33

Slightly different take here.

I don't mind anyone knowing where I get stuff from. But I have one dear friend who ALWAYS comments on something I am wearing as soon as she sees me, and ALWAYS asks where it's from. Sometimes we're with other people and I just don't like attention being drawn to me and my clothes and I just feel it's not important to say where it's from. I know she's asking just to work out where might have clothes she likes, and that's lovely, but it just feels too intrusive at the time and in the circumstance and because she asks it EVERY time. But I'm not a cow so I either just tell, or sometimes I'll say oh I'm not too sure.

So I've enjoyed this thread!

That is rude! Sometimes I do feel embarrassed to say where o have bought something from when it’s expensive as don’t want people to think I’m showing off.

That’s rude.

My SiL does it. Always ‘how much did that cost you?’ I always say tuppence. I caught her checking out the label in my coat once - she then Googled it and told me it was far too expensive - (a wool Reiss coat that I’d got for a bargain in TK Maxx(

If I’m wearing something expensive (not often) I usually say I got it on sale and it was an absolute bargain in case people think I’m showing off.

mondaytosunday · 05/08/2025 16:21

Why wouldn’t you tell her?
Though I do admit that I was a bit put out when a friend admired the tiles in my new bathroom and I sent her the link and she then proceeded to use them in her new bathroom. She didn’t tell me (wish she had as I would have sold her a box of them I had leftover) so I think even she thought it might be annoying. I guess I thought she’d use similar, not the exact same, tiles. I was perfectly happy telling her the paint I used in my living room for her sons bedroom but tiles seem a bit more individual.

stayathomer · 05/08/2025 16:23

Do you think it’s a ‘it’s mine, I don’t want others to copy me’ thing? I tell people but most of my stuff is old old so I’m no help (‘ah I got it 20 years ago in pennys😅’)

Britpopbaby · 05/08/2025 16:30

I love it when someone asks me where I got something from especially if I can say x pounds from x charity shop and it’s by x label.

TheCurious0range · 05/08/2025 16:33

Less likely to if it was expensive, but that's rare anyway, just ugh sounds braggy oh this old thing it's designer. Fully happy to share usually though, oh I really like your dress where is it from? Tesco it was only £12 in their sale! Etc

irregularegular · 05/08/2025 16:34

I would definitely tell someone if they asked. I'd find it really odd to refuse! Sometimes I tell people without them asking if they have complimented it, asked if it is new etc Usually because I want to boast that I got it very cheaply from Vinted or a charity shop.

defrazzled · 05/08/2025 17:17

I am embarrassingly awful the opposite way tbh ‘this old thing, I found it in a bin’ When ‘thank you’ is more than sufficient 😂
