Do you tell people where you bought something from?

Obviously if they ask, I don’t mean going up to random strangers and telling them I got my top from New Look

I bought a jumpsuit suit from Fat Face a few weeks and have worn it a few times and have had a few compliments on it and a couple of people have asked where it came from.

I was out with a friend last night and a woman asked me where I’d got it from so I told her.

Friend was like why would you tell her? I never tell people.

I always tell people if I can remember, especially as in this case the shop is about 3 doors up from the bar we were in and is currently in their window.

*got pockets not hot pockets 😂

I always tell people, my wardrobe is so varied answers vary from Supermarket and primark to handmade in Greece or Max Mara etc. I’m also the kind of person who can’t help following up with 70% off in the M&S sale etc 🙈

Same! Especially if I've picked something up for a song in the charity shop or on Vinted etc.

Lillupsy · 06/08/2025 09:26

I always tell people if they ask. My entire wardrobe (except underwear) is either from the charity shop or vinted. I have no qualms about telling people 🤷🏼♀️.

I generally tell people if they ask. Or a more general thing that's become a running joke is the compliment on a dress, to which I say thanks! It's hot pockets, doing the hands in pockets, knees slightly bent flex 😂.
I did however work with a woman who was a little stalkerish and would emulate my taste in music, opinions etc. I stopped telling her where anything came from in case she turned up in the same item two days later.

Me too 🤣🤣🤣. I’m far too exited when a dress has pockets 🤣

Lovemycat2023 · 06/08/2025 09:31

I always tell people, including if it came second hand where it was originally from. It’s hard to find clothes you like and if you see an outfit on someone it’s much better than seeing it online!

ItsBouqeeeet · 06/08/2025 09:32

My friends and family laugh at me because when they ask where something is from, the answer is usually Vinted or the charity shop 😁

Daisyvodka · 06/08/2025 09:48

I've found my people! Im also an oversharer, if someone really seems to like it i will absolutely be like 'maybe size down if xxx ooh im sure i saw one in that size on Vinted or xxx site often have xx brand on sale..' I just loves clothes and know how great it feels when you find something you like so want to spread the joy!
The only person I've ever known like this was a dick in general, agree with PP that it was definitely a superiority complex thing with her, in hindsight she thought she was incredibly fashion forward and didnt want anyone else being 'cool'... i couldnt resist once when someone complimented her in front of me and she gave her classic 'oh im not sure, think ive had it ages' and i said 'there's something incredibly similar in the New In section on the Zara website if you're looking for it!' (Knowing full well it was the same top as she only ever wore bloody Zara) she was fuming 😬

MaryGreenhill · 06/08/2025 09:49

Yes of course

And yet do you ever use those pockets? I don't 😂

ToveCoco · 06/08/2025 10:16

A lone voice here but no I don't, unless it's a good friend. I think it's weird to ask - why do people ask? All I can think is that they want to go and buy the same item (rude and lazy, do your own shopping) or (weirdest of all and hopefully unlikely) they're going to judge you depending on your answer.

irregularegular · 06/08/2025 10:18

@ToveCoco I'd be highly unlikely to buy the same item. Certainly if it was someone I knew. It's more just finding out where might be a good place to find nice things generally. Or just making conversation!

"do your own shopping" 😂

Presumably you've never bought something because you've seen it in an advert, or in a magazine, or walking past a shop window on your way to work?

If you don't want people to own the same items as you I've got bad news for you about the retail industry.

I do! For my phone, otherwise I leave it everywhere 🤣

sonjadog · 06/08/2025 11:46

I think MN paranoia and «everyone is out to get me» has reached a new height!

JMAngel1 · 06/08/2025 11:51

I always tell people where something is from - I get asked most days where clothes or boots I’m wearing come from and I always love watching their reaction when I, 9 times out of 10, say Shein. They are by far my most complimented clothes. Most of the time they are surprised and say I look very “expensive” and “classy” - hah!
I don’t understand people being cagey - it’s not very sisterly

sciaticafanatica · 06/08/2025 12:07

I rarely as anyone where they got something from these days.
normally just take a quick photo and do a reverse image search

Same! I love pockets.

I only ever put my hands in them though.

I found pockets in a dress I’d had for ages and hadn’t noticed the pockets, it was like Christmas.

I sometimes feel like I don’t know what to do with my hands

Some people I know who are good with sewing even add their own pockets. Genius.

I used to happily share, however I was surprised to go to an event recently & one of my best ff was wearing exactly the top she'd asked me the provenance of...
I will choose who I tell now ...

Why does it matter? Surely you're aware other people have also bought the top.

bridgetreilly · 06/08/2025 16:49

If I love wearing something, I want other people to enjoy it too! And I want companies to know there is a market for it and make more things I’ll love.

Blingismything · 06/08/2025 17:41

Yes I would/do tell them.

hoohaal · 06/08/2025 17:48

I think it’s so weird when people are like this.

I made a Mum friend at school. I asked where she got an item of clothing from and she (I thought) told me. We were at a party a few weeks later when I heard her telling a Mum she always lies when someone asks her where she gets her clothes from.

Then she saw me in some check trousers one day and told me how awful they were and asked where they were from. I told her, and then a month later I saw a picture of her wearing the same ones.

People are weird.

girlwhowearsglasses · 07/08/2025 18:12

I had a friend at uni who was so possessive of her style that when I bought some coloured tights she told me straight out that they were 'her thing' and she didn't like other people wearing them. I actually listened to her to keep the peace. Me now is really annoyed with me then and wished I'd had a backbone!
