Am tempted to grab a load of my hair at the back and just cut it off

Would that be insane?

I'm not doing a Britney, just can't afford to go to the hairdresser and my hair looks really scrabby at the ends.

Could I just hold it back and snip the ends off in one go or would it look too noticeable?

It's past my shoulders, about two inches.

I am too!

Can't afford to see the hairdresser, either.

It's super bushy, too.

Let's cut our hair off!

cornsilk · 28/05/2008 17:36

You could be a hairdresser's model if you're that desperate.

lazarou · 28/05/2008 17:36

Good idea Lapin. The college is only down the road.

I keep holding it back and getting that rush of adrenalin, like I have to do it!

Ok expat, i will if you will.Although neither of us would know. Where are those scissors...

It's too rural an area to do teh college student as hairdresser thing or model.

I cut it myself about 6 ago, but just the back.

Now, I need to thin it out.

I'm going to have a go tonight, laz. I'm game if you are!

BoysAreLikeDogs · 28/05/2008 17:37

Nooooooo

The local college may have trainee hairdressers who need clients to practice ontrain with.

Mobile hairdressers charge less than a salon would.

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:38

I section mine off with those clips and put newspaper down.

I'm going to go for it as soon as the girls are in bed!

lazarou · 28/05/2008 17:40

OK, I will try just the ends later. Actually, I could ask dh to have a go. He is completely incapable of following instructions though, and my head is too much of a funny shape to go completely bald.

from your profile pic you do have an odd shaped head Lazarou, is that why you have the hat?

Please don't cut too much off, just find a cheap hairdressers, they do exist, phone around and ask and also some do staff training nights when its cheaper.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 28/05/2008 17:46

Expat, I forgot you live in a remote area.

Let me have a think

expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 17:48

I've got me some sharp scissors!

The only real problem is the back, because it's hard to see without craning your neck.

But who looks at the back of anyone's head, anyhow?

SNoraWotzThat · 28/05/2008 17:49

you tube DIY haircuts Use sharp scissors

there's lots of youtube ones

BoysAreLikeDogs · 28/05/2008 17:51

Lol Expat, you really are going to go for it.

Sharp scissors are deffo a must in that case, plus make very sure that your fingers are out of the way.

lazarou · 28/05/2008 18:07

I nearly just did it but chickened out. My hair is very fine, and because I have highlights and long layers it looks all frazzled and whispy. This morning I just washed it and left it, normally I blow dry it. I think that's why it looks so awful.

OP posts:
IorekByrnison · 28/05/2008 18:31

Don't do it. I did this about three weeks ago. I look very bad.

lazarou · 28/05/2008 19:13

Dh said he will just trim it later

OP posts:
mankymummy · 28/05/2008 19:15

do it.

but... put your hair up in a bunch right on top of your head and then hack the pony tail off.

trust me it will look gorgeous - mine did. NOT!

EffiePerine · 28/05/2008 19:17

Can you get someone to come to your house? My mum has a fab woman who charges £3 a go (less for my dad as he has little hair left)

NigellaTheUndomesticGoddess · 28/05/2008 19:21

I had my annual haircut just today. am slightly hairdresser phobic so can only talk myself into it once a year. i now have neat shaped shortish nice hair. or did until i washed it about 5 minutes ago.
i did a few DIY ones over the years - never looked too bad but never very good either.

lazarou · 28/05/2008 19:26

I'm completely skint. Maybe tommorrow it will look better after I have blow dried it. It's just so frazzled on the ends and flat.

OP posts:
mankymummy · 28/05/2008 20:09

immac it. go sinead oconnor !

lazarou · 28/05/2008 20:23

If I thought I would look half decent I probably would shave my head.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 28/05/2008 20:24

unfortunately, i don't suit really short hair.

my features are too big.

beansmum · 28/05/2008 20:26

I did mine a couple of weeks ago, had terrible split ends (some hairs were split into 4!) and needed to do something. It does look pretty bad, but I always have it tied back.
