Am I too old for this dress?

Do you think I can get away with this dress for Europe this summer ? I am almost 59. Size 10 (hope it fits haven't received it yet). I’m now thinking the print is quite young ? Thanks for your input

Who are these people that pay £400+ for a dress ? Or £350+ for a handbag ?
I'd really like to know.

Why do you want to know? I've got several dresses which cost £400 and upwards. I'm not interested in handbags so have never spent that much on a bag.

I'd really like to know how anyone can proclaim that they're a Marxist. It's an economic theory which has failed miserably everywhere it's been put into practice. Marxism has resulted in brutal oppressions, famines and the death of millions.

People who can afford it and want to. We all spend our money on different things that make us happy. For some people it's theatre tickets, for others it's adventure holidays, for others it's beautiful clothes. You're on Style and Beauty, it shouldn't be difficult to grasp. I don't think you'd be so puzzled if it were a beautiful Swiss watch and you should see what some of those cost.

Floisme · 04/07/2025 06:48

I spent £250 on a dress in 1994. Google tells me that would be the equivalent of £635 today.
It wasn’t a wedding dress.
What else would you like to know, MarxistMags?

Confuuzed · 04/07/2025 06:49

£400 and it's not even lined?

SallySummerPop · 04/07/2025 09:48

No way! It's beautiful and classy.

MayIDestroyYou · 04/07/2025 10:29

Are you lost, @MarxistMags? This is the Style & Beauty board.

While it may be true that 95% of the board is posters excitedly telling each other that Next and Hobbs exist - some people who frequent this area are actually interested in clothes and fashion in the way other people are in skiing and watches and holidays in the Maldives …

You’re free to join in, or not - as you please. But I hope you don’t view this board as an opportunity to shame women for exercising their freedom of choice.

I'm sorry but what a ridiculously pointless comment!

I'm in my 50s now & have a life long interest in clothes & over the years I've bought many items exceeding £350!

You'd die altogether if i told you the value of the jewelley i wear on a daily basis 😀

I work. I can afford it. Wearing beautiful clothes brings me enormous pleasure. I donate and / or sell them onwards for a fraction of the retail price.

I keep certain things for my daughter.

I never shop in fast fashion places like Primark or h&m etc.

I probably buy FAR fewer items per year than most people but I look after them & wear them for years & years.

MarxistMags · 04/07/2025 11:15

Of course I'm not. People can spend their money as they see fit. Says me sitting here in my £5 t-shirt from Asda ! 🤣😁🤣

MayIDestroyYou · 04/07/2025 11:20

So why did you pose the question?

StarDolphins · 04/07/2025 11:25

I absolutely LOVE this dress, totally my style! Enjoy op, you’re definitely not too old at all! Gorgeous & stylish!

Where is it from please?

MayIDestroyYou · 04/07/2025 11:27

Read the thread, @StarDolphins.

Flamingoknees · 04/07/2025 12:03

I'm 56,size 12, 5ft 8in, and would absolutely wear it, if it wasn't for my boobs. The round neck would enhance them and make me look matronly.
If you have a smaller bust, I think it's lovely.

RuthW · 04/07/2025 12:08

Yes if you are 120. Otherwise no.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/07/2025 12:22

I love the print. I think the high neck may make it a bit too warm, but that may just be me projecting as I can’t wear things up by my throat!

Igetalittlebitcloser · 04/07/2025 13:04

It’s fabulous! I am too tall for it though. I can’t do pretty dresses, they make me look like an overgrown toddler.

SayLaveee · 04/07/2025 13:08

Ignore me because I am clearly totally alone in this but... I absolutely hate the print! Im sorry! To me it is really twee and actually I think it is WAY too old for you, not at all too young!

Pluvia · 04/07/2025 13:25

Notaripoff · 02/07/2025 08:14

It's a lovely dress OP and you are not too old at all.

Ugh to those posters that just can't help themselves with "is it an Amazon rip off" and "bit try hard".

Check the links provided. Amazon appears to be offering the exact same dress in polyester for £26. The original is £400. Nothing ugh about it.

Svolvaer · 04/07/2025 13:26

I’m 71 and I’d definitely wear it, it’s gorgeous.

@MarxistMags, I am with @NewShoesForSpring on this. Perhaps the Style and Beauty board isn't for you?

I have always love clothes, but have a smaller wardrobe than most people I know - because I shop with great care, looking for quality above all. I love having special pieces, things which are beautifully made, which have perhaps a pattern, an embroidery detail, or a pleating or finishing detail that isn't common. And I really care about fabric quality. And I take really good care of my clothes, bags, and shoes.

You would probably black out if you saw that I have occasionally bought dresses (generally Oscar de la Renta) that weren't just 300 but over 3000. And for bags, 3000 plus is a more general price range. I've thought about these things for a long time before purchasing them and I will love them forever. Think of it as an expensive but deeply pleasurable hobby.

ChocolateGanache · 04/07/2025 14:42

I think you’re old enough to wear whatever the god damn hell you like OP!

SecondVerseSameAsThe1st · 04/07/2025 15:41

Same here. I order t-shirts in different prints and that’s my summer wardrobe. 😊 I spend money on what some would consider very frivolous things. To each their own.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/07/2025 15:55

Of course not. It’s just a sensible and pretty dress. Ageless.
