Hi guys

Really wondering if you can help me. Off on holiday next month n looking a dress that is cool eg cotton fabric that I could wear in evening

I really love the dress below from new look, but it's not particularly flattering around my stomach! Really suits me everywhere else

I'm
Size 16
age 57
blonde hair to below shoulder
Medium skin tone
great legs
decent boobs DD to E
arms n stomach heavy
Prefer clear bright colours eg not dusky pinks or autumnal colours

What’s your budget?

I’d imagine the New Look dress isn’t working because they skimp on fabric to keep prices down. Somewhere like

Farm Rio

might cut more generously.

Sorry budget is no more than £50

There's seems to be a decent amount of fabric on new look dress...and it's not a stiff fabric.

Will check out link thanks

I’m guessing because the NL dress gathers under the bust, it sticks straight out over a round belly.

I think you’ll have to either just go with it if the boobs and legs take most of the attention or look for more of a loose all over type dress the problem then is you just look bigger all over.

I think big belly is one of the toughest shapes to dress. You can end up looking like a meatball on toothpicks or if you go big all over you can end up looking massive. It’s similar or you have massive boobs. You either wear tight clothes which often look inelegant or loose clothes and you just look fat.

maybe something similar to the NL dress but with ties rather than elastic so you can adjust how hard it pulls in. If you draw it in just slightly the dress might not stick out so much over your belly.

Haha you know what I mean! I have friends who are slim but have massive boobs and they have a similar problem. Wear tight tops and they look like a bar wench. But if they don’t wear tight tops they look 3 sizes larger over all.
I think bellies do the same. Wear short dresses to highlight the legs and the torso can look like a meatball. A bit like SpongeBob. But cover the legs to try to even things out and you just feel huge all over.

I think that red dress is a really good overall look and i think the red is amazing. I think that style but with a less pulled in cinching would look great and I think other people won’t actually focus on your middle as much as you do.

blubbyblub · 15/05/2025 16:40

These are not as nice as your NL dress but I’m posting to show the shape I mean. Similar to yours but less pulled in under the bust. If it’s less pulled in the fabric won’t the. Have to poof outwards at the tummy so much.

Where are they from and I'll go n investigate thank you!

I am a fellow Apple (size 16) - I feel your pain! Recently I found that a cowl neck style long dress actually looked great on me. It was not a style I thought would work, but it highlighted the boobs and skimmed over the tum.

It was this: https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/brown-leopard-print-cowl-neck-midi-dress/p/904634329

Appreciate leopard print isn’t for everyone but this cut was really flattering. They have similar in different colours/patterns. If there is a store near you, I recommend trying that cut.

Missmarplesknittingbuddy · 15/05/2025 18:53

Another fat apple here !.
I feel your pain .
Anything the fits around the bust / stomach is usually too big on the shoulders / hips / legs . No help whatsoever but following with interest, as I either look big all over or a cube on sticks , depending on the style .

DeftHare · 15/05/2025 19:02

You didn't say how tall are you? I think a kaftan type dress with a deep V neck, hides a lot, cool and floating and makes the most of a good cleavage! A lovely deep coral colour would look great with blonde hair! Have a google, but tesco and m&s do some surprisingly reasonable dresses.

SwanOfThoseThings · 15/05/2025 19:05

I'm an apple with big boobs and for some reason, New Look dresses never hang right on me, must be to do with the cut. I like 'Made in Italy' dresses for summer, usually pick them up second hand so nothing in current range to recommend.

She's 5'5 - in thread title rather than OP.

Didn't see that but thank you 😊

Have a look at Laundry B or Kit & Kaboodal.

random9876 · 15/05/2025 19:26

I’d go for Vinted - I never buy new now. That way you can get great quality, affordable dresses which do tend to be flattering

Hahahah. Love the creativity with the meatball on toothpicks. Many men have that with their beer bellies!

https://apacheshops.com/products/panama-dress?_pos=1&_sid=87fbb98ea&_ss=r

Can pull in at the waist and the fabric skims over the stomach area.

I have one and I don’t feel hot and sweaty in it.

Its really nice but heading to Greece so think I'd really need a natural fabric. Might think about it for autumn though!

There's quite a lot of sales on. If you go to each shop's website then use the drop downs. House of Fraser have a sale. Other than that Primark is really good if you can spend time looking properly.
