Skinny/straight jeans were more flattering and easier

I have a theory, (you’ll probably all say it’s wrong 😀) that skinny and or straight jeans were easier to choose and style than these great flapping things we’re supposed to wear at the moment.
Being out last night, unless you’re like a size 6 the big wide jeans just make you look well, big and wide. Agree skinny weren’t for Everyone but most arses looked better in them.

People get really cross about jeans

I also think it’s more about body shape. I’m slim with very slim legs and arse and can wear skinnies, and I do sometimes, but objectively, because I also have a big bust, they really aren’t the most flattering.

I think too it’s about the look/vibe you are going for. Not all jeans do the same thing. I’ve got some baggy jeans which are laidback. Skinnies can look more formal or more sexy, depending how they are worn. The wash is a factor. As are shoes, as the wrong ones will cut your legs off. And as is what you wear on your top half.

As PP said there is something for everyone, whether that’s what you like to wear (regardless of whether they are flattering) or whether you are looking for something to match your figure.

You met two guys? What does that even mean? Did you feel validated?
you do realise don’t you that many men will find anything tight, short, low cut and transparent alluring no matter how awful woman looks in them. It’s not an indication of a flattering outfit.

Yes of course i feel validated....why wouldn't I? Surely it proves the skinnies are still well loved.

Such a weird comment. I cant imagine how it would come up in conversation that a man thought your jeans looked good. Commenting on body type and people's figures is really not cool.

Mirabai · 05/04/2025 09:29

I agree they’re not flattering. I’m petite and I just look swamped.

I wear skinny bell bottoms instead.

BitOutOfPractice · 05/04/2025 09:32

I do think wide legs look better on tall people. But I think any shape goes now. Well it does where I live, in the real world where most people don’t really care what’s in or out on the catwalk.

I still wear skinnies occasionally. I often wear wide legs. It’s all gravy.

I hardly ever wear them. Once a month?

FKAT · 05/04/2025 09:36

I suit skinnies because I'm tall, have long legs and a nice arse. I'm not skinny though 12-14 but I think that having curves helps with the skinny shape. Otherwise you'd look like Marcel Marceau.

I also have sensory issues and hate lots of fabric flapping around my body. It makes me feel dirty and draughty. Day to day I'm usually in gym leggings / skinnies / jeggings. I do have some flares and wide legs though to ring the changes but can only wear them with certain footwear / weather to avoid the 'flappy' feeling.

Basically, wear what suits you. Don't feel you have to wear wide legs because that's what the kids are in.

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 05/04/2025 09:53

I’m an inverted triangle, and wide leg jeans really work for me as they balance me out. In skinnies I looked as top-heavy as I am.

StubbornStool · 05/04/2025 08:01

Of course you can wear what you like, that’s not what the thread is about. The fact is that for most people closer fitting jeans looked better.

No need for the past tense. For most people, straight jeans still do look better, that's why so many people have continued to wear them!

NotsosunnyShropshire · 05/04/2025 10:28

I prefer skinny/narrow jeans. I never know what footwear to wear with wide/flares. Boots don’t look right, even my DMs and I tend to wear floaty tops rather than T-shirts so trainers just look odd.

I’ll stick to what I know.

StubbornStool · 05/04/2025 10:47

I think the past tense was inadvertent

Yes, but I remember having footwear issues about skinny

Flares are a great vibe, some of my best nights out in the 90s involved stacked heels and butt hugging Velma trousers. I'll take the memories to my grave.

But at my age it's a no. I don't want to wear huge platforms any more and with flatter shoes flares, bootcuts or widelegs make me look like a beachball with feet.

A boyfriend with a small turn up is as far as I'll indulge the new silhouette. And I read the other day that even that is 'dated'. Fair enough, I'd rather be dated than invisible.

Liondoesntsleepatnight · 05/04/2025 10:53

I’m still in skinny jeans as I look awful in wide legs. I’m tall, long legs, I look like a rectangle in wide legs. I would be foolish to spend moves on something tff he at doesn’t suit me

This. It is better to look dated and appealing than in those whalish mummy jeans.

TheDevilWearPrimarni · 05/04/2025 10:56

Wear whatever shape jeans you like.
Different shaped jeans suit different physiques and all styles are available to buy.
Bootcut and flares balance out the hips.
Straight and slim suit most shapes.
Skinny does not suit everyone and can be v unflattering, but great if you like to wear knee high boots. Can be irritating if they are exceptionally tight on the calf I find.
Wide leg styles you need to get the proportion right.
Barrel and carrot style definitely can be tricky.
Mom jean are my pet hate. I’m not sure they flatter anyone and I definitely don’t look good in them.
I also don’t like rigid denim because it can be so uncomfortable.

CluelessStyle · 05/04/2025 10:59

I think slim (not skinny) are the most flattering on most people.
It's great that people can wear what is most comfortable for them as all styles are in the shops.

FKAT · 05/04/2025 11:02

You see, I do like a mum jean to wear as they nip in at the waist, feel structured and make your bum look nice but they photograph something awful - I always look 5 months pregnant. Luckily I am not a tabloid celeb so not a major issue in my life.

WorriedRelative · 05/04/2025 11:04

Nope, skinny jeans made me look like a misshapen parsnip

SallyWD · 05/04/2025 11:17

I'm pear shaped so have big thighs. I absolutely don't want very wide legged jeans because they'd make my legs look even bigger.
But anyway, I haven't paid any attention to fashion since I was 15. I just wear what I like and what suits me. Sorry if that sounds smug but I don't understand grown women wearing things they don't particularly like because of fashion. Fashions change every five minutes.

Not flattering on me, I have huge calves so anything slimmer then a baggy straight cut clings weirdly and I look ridiculous.

Makes me wonder what people with absolutely perfect body shapes prefer to wear....I think most of us are just trying to find something that doesnt draw attention to whatever we dislike!

Lampzade · 05/04/2025 11:24

I have good legs so skinny jeans looked great .on me . However, I like straight leg three quarter length jeans so this is what I wear.
Wear what suits your body shape

I think the barrel jeans are awful tbh

Diggetydawg · 05/04/2025 11:43

I loathe skinny jeans, they look shit and I find them uncomfortable on the calves. Wide leg are the best for me and i like barrel for summer. I think flare/bootcut are the most flattering though.

Diggetydawg · 05/04/2025 11:52

That should say flare/bootcut are the most universally flattering. Or straight probably
