Skinny/straight jeans were more flattering and easier

I have a theory, (you’ll probably all say it’s wrong 😀) that skinny and or straight jeans were easier to choose and style than these great flapping things we’re supposed to wear at the moment.
Being out last night, unless you’re like a size 6 the big wide jeans just make you look well, big and wide. Agree skinny weren’t for Everyone but most arses looked better in them.

I’m a pear shaped size UK 10/12 with big bum and thighs, so skinny jeans always looked horrendous on me. I was thrilled to embrace mom jeans in about 2015, and have moved on to wide leg, barrel, balloon since.

I don’t really care about looking not “whaleish” - anyone can see I am not a skinny person regardless of what jeans I wear!

SuperSange · 05/04/2025 13:24

That’s the thing with following fashion rather than wearing what suits you. 💁🏻‍♀️

familyissues12345 · 05/04/2025 13:32

I thought I’d never move away from skinnies, but then have been converted by M&S mom jeans. I’m fairly tall, typical apple shape and in hindsight I looked like a lollipop in skinnies BlushGrin

I agree. I saw a group of women out the other night, each was wearing a different style of jeans and were all of a similar height and size (about size 10 to 12). The most flattering style was the narrow leg/dkinny. The flares /boot cut looked ok. The wide leg looked ill proportioned. The barrel leg were the worst, they made the woman’s legs look about 2ft long - incredibly unflattering.

Unfortunately fashions need to continue to change to make us spend our money.

According to you. But as these things are subjective, your interpretation of what is flattering is just that. Your interpretation.
one look at a crowd proves that different people have very different views on what looks good

RaraRachael · 05/04/2025 13:52

I still wear my skinnies as they suit me and I particularly like shoving them into boots in the winter.

I lived through baggy jeans in the 70s and can remember nearly breaking my leg catching my foot in the flapping mass of material many a time.

No interest in fashion as long as I'm happy with how I look.

Truly stylish people do both. They know how to tweak things to suit them. How to pick a straight leg over a super wide leg when loose legs are in fashion. But they won’t wear the skinnies that suit them that season because they look off. They know what trends to swerve. And they rest items that suit them but are outdated until they fall into fashion again.
what stylish people don’t do is slavishly stick to what they think suits them even if they are way out of fashion that season. They just wear other things and test that item for the time being. One thing the truly stylish never is is a sheep to fashion nor straight up out of fashion. They understand trends and work them to suit them

DirtyBird · 05/04/2025 13:58

I actually thought most people looked horrible in skinny jeans/pants. To me I feel like a looser fit works better in overall. I grew up in the 80s when looser fit clothing was trendy and I don’t remember ever thinking anyone looked bad in that style. But with skinnies there a many times I think the opposite

dudsville · 05/04/2025 15:01

I looked great in close fitting jeans, but at the end of peri, when life got all strange and weird, and I was tired, hot and restless, I suddenly couldn't bear fitted things. Things are settled now hormonaly, but when I try those things all now I just feel all trussed up, too bound or contained. I can't see going back to close fitting things, even if they make me more attractive.

ALunchbox · 05/04/2025 15:04

Inmy yes bootcup tends to work better on most body shapes. Skinny and wide legs are more hit and miss.

petermaddog · 05/04/2025 15:36

depends on the body they are on

HelloVeraPlant · 05/04/2025 15:40

I disagree as it depends on the shape of your legs - for me anyway.

20 year old me had a cute butt and slim legs. Skinnies looked great. Straight worked.

30 something year old me has chunkier legs that are close together and when I look in the mirror in skinnies I don’t like them. I can’t get them past my thighs.

straight is alright, but because I’m curvy I don’t think it does much for me.

I prefer something more flared or with some shape to manipulate my shape a little.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 05/04/2025 15:53

I’ve got all types for different moods, days, occasions etc.

Love my wide leg or relaxed fit but can’t get my head around wearing boots unless it’s with bootcut or skinnys…

Barrel jeans just have such a weird silhouette but then are strangely ok when you wear them.

I think it’s what you get used to almost as a generation. I don’t think you’d convince too many teenagers that skinny jeans are ok.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 05/04/2025 15:55

Same goes for low rise vs mid rise vs high rise.

30 year old me would never have considered a high rise jean. It was all about sitting low on your hip with hip bones showing. 46 year old me is 15 kgs heavier and hip bones are a bit less prominent 😂

Yorkshirelass04 · 05/04/2025 15:58

I miss wearing skinny jeans, a top and heels.

I often feel that the companies selling mum or barrel leg jeans with weird billowy tops with massive statement collars are gaslighting me! I don't want to look 2 sizes wider.

Blondiney · 05/04/2025 16:02

Bootcut suit my body best but have had a few compliments (from women) on my enormous palazzos. I still feel like a bit of a dick in them though.

weshallovercomeaswevedonebefore · 05/04/2025 16:05

I’m tall and thin (5’10, size 6-8) and find really wide jeans swamp me, despite being tall. Too much material. I like straight leg best, or bootcut, or a boyfriend/ girlfriend (have jeans called both, but never worked out what the difference is!) as a kind of half way house. Skinnies to me feel a bit 2011.

Like everything, some styles suit some people. Lucky there is no one obvious jeans shape trend ATM so you alcan wear what you like.

However, I have a theory that people were so used to seeing skinny shaped trousers for so long, it's taking a while to visually adjust to volume there instead.

Totally agree about needing to 'get your eye into' a new shape because it always looks wrong at first. In the early 2000s there was widespread horror at the sudden popularity of skinny jeans and everyone thought they would surely only ever be worn by size 4 models as they would be so unflattering on 'normal' women. I remember being genuinely taken aback the first time I saw a woman wearing leggings as trousers but over time it becomes just a normal look as you get used to seeing it.

DaphneduM · 05/04/2025 16:36

Personally I enjoy wearing all styles except the ultra skinny jeans. When I was younger and a few stone lighter I only wore skinnies, but then that was pretty much the only style most people wore. Back in the 70's of course I wore flares accompanied by platform sole shoes and boots.

Now I like straight leg, barrel leg, wide leg, palazzo. Weirdly the only style I don't feel actually suits me are boot-cut - somehow they look too retro and old fashioned on me. Just picked up a pair of very wide leg pin-stripe jeans from M and S (Per Una) and they're great. I got the idea from my beautiful daughter who looks stunning in a pair of Mango cream pinstripe wide leg jeans, and she has had many compliments!!! (I will only get one compliment - from my husband - he's good like that!!!!).

Agree with others on here - it's how you style them that counts and definitely the right footwear. I'm an hourglass shape now and find having a definitive waist helps with the wide and barrel leg styling proportions. I always look at websites like Net a Porter to get ideas of how they style jeans. Even if you're not a sylph like model, it's good for inspiration. In my case it's usually accomplished via Vinted!!!!

I can't imagine that anyone thought barrel leg jeans were a good idea.
Very odd shape

Floisme · 05/04/2025 18:59

I'll go back to skinnies when I think they're looking interesting again, which I'm sure will happen at some stage. But telling me they'll make my arse look smaller doesn't really cut it.

Have you seen the Horseshoe ones? Ohhh the horror! Why would you want bandy looking legs?

DGPP · 05/04/2025 19:30

I agree, wide and barrel leg make people look huge. I’m sticking to straight leg

I disagree, as long as you style them properly they look great. I think you need to make sure you have a defined waistline so you don't look huge.
Although I also don't think skinny people look fat just because they are in baggier jeans.
I know when I was obese it was the extra weight that made me look fat.....not the jeans!😂

Gettingbysomehow · 05/04/2025 19:43

I wear straight leg jeggings because they suit my figure 100% also comfy and flattering. There is no way I'm wearing wide leg trousers, I look awful in them.
I don't care how fashionable they are.
A tv presenter wore them with a pink blouse the other day and they looked frumpy and awful and dare I say fat, she wasn't fat, they just made her look it.
