Skinny/straight jeans were more flattering and easier

I have a theory, (you’ll probably all say it’s wrong 😀) that skinny and or straight jeans were easier to choose and style than these great flapping things we’re supposed to wear at the moment.
Being out last night, unless you’re like a size 6 the big wide jeans just make you look well, big and wide. Agree skinny weren’t for Everyone but most arses looked better in them.

Yesss I'm a lover of skinnies too. In the winter with ankle boots. Spring/summer with sandals or trainers. I've tried the wide leg they look great on some but don't do anything for me at all.

Game0fCrones · 05/04/2025 20:00

I agree. You need to be either thin (size 8 and below) or tall to pull off flared/barrel leg/wide leg jeans.

I think most women look best in straight or slim leg jeans. Skinny jeans tend to suit slim pear shapes and hourglasses.

Coffeeforayear · 05/04/2025 20:03

Am short. I didn't suit wide legged jeans back in the 90s and don't now either.

I go for slim fitting, straight legged jeans, rather than skinny.

tillyandmilly · 05/04/2025 20:08

Disagree - we don't all want to show off our bums! We want comfort and I personally think they suit apple shape figures the best - skinny look awful on fat bottom women - these barrel legs are far more flattering for the classic female figure - personally I have never worn skinny jeans - I have big knees and they look horrible!

Of course you can wear what you like, that’s not what the thread is about. The fact is that for most people closer fitting jeans looked better.

I agree with you @StubbornStool

RaraRachael · 05/04/2025 20:50

@Yorkshirelass04 now those are a whole new level of abomination 😅

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 05/04/2025 20:58

Skinny look best on me, wide legged make me look wide and my arse look huge! Skinny actually show off my legs and arse which are my best bit.

I wear all sorts though, although I look smartest in Skinny jeans.

Worriedsickmostofthetime · 05/04/2025 21:30

I still think we need to talk about low rise vs mid rise vs high rise!

😂

RatandToad · 05/04/2025 21:35

CountryTunes · 05/04/2025 09:17

Yes of course i feel validated....why wouldn't I? Surely it proves the skinnies are still well loved.

Only if you dress for the male gaze instead of yourself. Good luck with that, it doesn't last.

StubbornStool · 05/04/2025 22:21

Now that definitely depends on your own. I am long legged, but short between crotch and tits so high-rise make me look like a giant Humpty Dumpty nappy.

I look short and plump in wide leg trousers. They are incredibly unflattering to me. Narrow legs all the way. I also often need trouser’s shortened as they make them so long and a plain straight cut is better for that.

DrCoconut · 05/04/2025 22:27

Ignore the autocorrect apostrophe

If you understand you don’t suit high waisted jeans why is it so hard for you to understand that some people look awful in skinny jeans?

Gettingbysomehow · 05/04/2025 19:43

I wear straight leg jeggings because they suit my figure 100% also comfy and flattering. There is no way I'm wearing wide leg trousers, I look awful in them.
I don't care how fashionable they are.
A tv presenter wore them with a pink blouse the other day and they looked frumpy and awful and dare I say fat, she wasn't fat, they just made her look it.

Oh, she looked frumpy, and fat - did she look old as well? Why not go for the full bingo card! 😬

Eminybob · 06/04/2025 02:08

God I remember really struggling to swap my bootlegs for skinnies when they first became fashionable, and now they are all I have worn for the last 20 odd years. My legs have always been my slimmest part so find them flattering on me.

HOWEVER, I have just ordered my first pair of wide legs (late to the party again) as I have recently lost a lot of weight and my legs are so skinny now that skinny jeans that fit on my waist are just too baggy around my thighs. It’s not a great look so I’m hoping wide will look better.

I did try on a couple of pairs of wide legs over the years when I was fat but I looked ridiculous, so fingers crossed they look better on my slimmer figure.

Tbrh · 06/04/2025 03:14

I agree so much with this! The style now is what I was wearing in 1993/4 when I was a teen. I like the look of a cropped top and baggy jeans, but it only looks good on young, thin girls. And baggy jeans are a bitch in the rain. People are such slaves to fashion ... fashion only changes so people will have to buy new things!

StubbornStool · 06/04/2025 04:44

@springbringshope not skinny per se. Slim or straight.

I like wide legged but you need the right proportions so you can wear a fitted top to balance them, and yeah, length is tricky so they break on your shoes but don’t drag and get wet. I still wear skinnies a lot and then cropped boyfriend in summer ( g star raw kate are my fave ever jeans) but I do also wear wide legged sometimes- I just find them harder to get right, especially with knitwear.

StarlightLady · 06/04/2025 05:10

I bought some wide legged jeans and cut the legs off. I now have 2 lovely denim pencil skirts 😀. Off course that is not true, but l’ with you all the way OP.

Overhaul54 · 06/04/2025 05:19

I remember arguing with my economics teacher in the 80’s that flares would never come back in . Drainpipe jeans were here ti
stay.
Early 90’s and we were all back in wider styles and then bootcuts. Followed by cargos as denim fell massively out of fashion full stop.
Point being you can dress for your shape or dress to be fashionable and there will be a moment in time when those worlds collide.

Drainpipes were early 80s, mid 80s onwards were Levi’s 501s. Late 80s were palazzo pants.

Like everything, some styles suit some people. Lucky there is no one obvious jeans shape trend ATM so you alcan wear what you like.

However, I have a theory that people were so used to seeing skinny shaped trousers for so long, it's taking a while to visually adjust to volume there instead.

I agree it has taken me so long to get used to different styles of jeans after about 10 years in skinnies!

stickybear · 06/04/2025 23:00

I feel like skinnies were easier as a blank canvas, you could wear pretty much anything with skinnies and it would look ok so it was much easier to style them. I like wide leg styles (and mom styles before them), but I find that you do need to give more thought to what you wear them with. E.g. as others have said, wearing a closer fitting top to balance out the volume. As my top half is not as it was last time that wide leg jeans were fashionable, I'm not always entirely comfortable in cropped / tight fitting tops Grin I like my wide legs for now but will definitely be ready to embrace tunic length tops and skinnies again the next time they come around!

RaraRachael · 07/04/2025 00:35

I don't like the baggy styles anyway but if you need to wear tight fitting tops with them then I'm definitely out.
My massive boobs need to be hidden, not on show 😁
