Never found a flattering pair of jeans - apple shape and feeling rubbish!

Please please help! I am getting quite down about this, as ridiculous as it sounds.

I have a 3 year old and never lost my baby weight - I'm left with an apple shape, so big tummy, slim legs and big bust (36DD/E). My tummy is quite pronounced and I just can't find any jeans to flatter. Any I buy seem to be too tight on the waist and/or just baggy and unflattering on my smaller bum and legs.

What sort of style should I be looking for and any brand suggestions? Please help! I really want some decent jeans for spring. Thank you

Hi there, don’t really have any specific recommendations, but have you tried maternity jeans? I know you’re not actually pregnant, but they are made to be more forgiving around the tummy but same shape as normal everywhere else? Could be a useful interim? You could subways cut off the extra bump panel?

ShebaQueen · 09/03/2025 18:08

I'm an apple shape and M&S Sienna straight leg jeans work best on me - I have tried so many!

Unfortunately I wanted some jeans I could tuck tops into etc - feel like maternity jeans are quite restricted and I would just have to wear long tops etc? :( I'm only 33 and I hate the thought of looking frumpy

Do you find they are true to size? I have had M&S jeans before and they've become quite stretchy - think this was the Ivy jeans though!

M&S carrot jeans. Look Instagram or TikTok, everyone’s loving them. flattering on everyone. I just bought two pairs

Yes true to size - sorry, I should have said, there are 2 versions, it's the £25 ones that I recommend. The £35 ones are very stretchy and soft, I need more structure.

pizzaHeart · 09/03/2025 18:17

I have been an apple shape all my life and love jeans, I’ve found that mid rise with slim legs works better plus using a belt . Currently I have Lily slim from M&S and some sort of mid rise from Next. I also look for more stretchy option.
Im a bit skeptical about tucking a top in when you are an apple shape but it’s just me.

Bert2e · 09/03/2025 18:28

Lily slim for me too. I'm a short apple (5ft 2ins and size 14) and much as I love the idea of wide leg they look terrible on. I've yet to try carrot but I'm not sure if I can bear the hideousness of the mirror again so soon!

Banrockmystation · 09/03/2025 18:38

I find m and s jeans awful! I’m apple too and a 16. Size 16 in everything and occasionally a 14. In m and s I would have to go up to a 18 or 20 to fit. They are ridiculous!
I like Levi’s, slim control (311 or 711 I can’t remember?) Maybe also try new look wide leg or river island? Both have been successful for me and also the wide leg slim shapers from next too.
I’ve got fab legs and small boobs but all weight on my tummy and it’s a proper fupa! I feel your pain op!

LavenderBlue19 · 09/03/2025 18:41

I'm an apple and I find M&S jeans really small on the waist - Next and Tu work better for me.

I'm an apple and m&s boyfriend work quite well.

Big tummy, slim straight hips / legs. I've got Tu jeans, high waisted flares, which balance out my shape and are very comfortable. Might be worth experimenting with high waist versions.

Anjelika · 09/03/2025 19:12

I'm an apple shape and don't find M&S jeans work for me. Their trousers and jeans are always too tight round the tummy if they fit on the bum. Next have always been my go to. I've had H&M and Zara jeans which have fit well but with both of them I'd size up.

MattSaracenQB1 · 09/03/2025 19:13

My body sounds like yours - I booked a free John Lewis personal stylist session, it's 2 hours and you have a nice changing room. They go and fetch jeans in styles they think might suit. I found a lovely pair

KnittingNurse · 09/03/2025 19:16

I love Hallie disco jeans from new look. Seem to suck in my tummy! Can get cheap on Vinted to give the shape a go.

crumpleduppieceofpaper · 09/03/2025 19:23

I just went to look at the M&S carrot jeans as mentioned upthread - the photos on the website are so bad! I want to see the model face on wearing the jeans, not doing stupid poses or photos of the pockets and nothing else. Totally pointless as I can't see how they hang or look properly!
They also look about 3 sizes too big for her - are they meant to hang round the crotch like that?!

Agree, the photos are dreadful. I was influenced after seeing two people with similar bodies to mine wearing them on social media (14 top, 16 bottom, mum tum!)

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 19:28

Im an apple and quite a flabby apple on the stomach, and I try to steer clear of these soft stretchy type of jeans, I need old fashioned hard thick fabric that holds me in a bit. I havent found anything perfect but the best is mom jeans from Matalan, nice shape

Just googled. It might be me, but those jeans are awful, almost as bad as clown pants (barrel leg it's called, I think). Even the model looks shit in them.

This is an example of real people of various heights and sizes wearing it, and all look equally as awful with an potential (slight) exception of the first woman (Abby). Carrots

Get some slim boyfriends, bootcuts or light flares, OP. And why would you tuck your top in if you have a bulging stomach? That's just going to accentuate the size of it. Wouldn't do that, but up to you.

We tried the viral M&S ‘carrot jeans’ to see if they really 'suit everyone'

DENIM is a big player on the high street and M&S in particular has a huge share of the market.  The retailer is the number one for womenswear denim, with one in every five women who bought…

I am an apple shape with a really flat bum! Sometimes I get things that are a bigger size and have them taken in on the hips and bum. But I have found Tommy Hilfiger straight leg cut are ok and I haven't had them adjusted. I have a size bigger than I need (I have lost weight since having my baby) and I wear a belt with them. I also have some cropped wide legs from Zara which are very flattering as the wide legs make my waist look slimmer.

soupyspoon · 09/03/2025 19:37

I tuck in tops as it then gives me a waist. I look massive if I dont do this.

Ahsheeit · 09/03/2025 19:50

Try blokes jeans. Smaller hips and bum on them, with the added bonus of pockets you can actually fit your phone in. Fit me better than any women's! I'm a 14 in women's, and wear a men's 34/30

CosyRoseDreamer · 09/03/2025 19:52

Thank you so much everyone. I've been so tearful this evening (stupid I know!) as confidence has taken a huge hit over the last few years and feel rubbish I can't even find a wardrobe staple to fit me. See so many people wearing the latest style of jeans looking fabulous and it gets to me. I totally agree about the comments with the top tucked in but think I was trying to create the illusion of a waist but maybe I'm kidding myself!
