What would you wear with these trousers? Please help a clueless person

I'm trying to wear jeans less, but I'm not really a skirt/dress person, especially when it's colder. I've seen these trousers from Next (linked both below) and tempted to buy one or both pairs as they look comfy (I have fibromyalgia, clothes can sometimes hurt so comfort is a must) but a bit smarter/more put together than something like joggers. I also love colour, but I'm not great at knowing what to wear it WITH, which is where I'm hoping Mumsnet can help.

What would you wear with these trousers?

I'm a size 16/18 and dropping weight slowly but surely so also attracted to the waistband that means they should fit me for a bit longer as they're elasticated waist!

To me they look like pyjamas. I don't think they're flattering on the model even. So honestly I just wouldn't bother. Sorry. I guess if you love them then a very plain top? But honestly they're not good.

CortadoPlease · 04/03/2025 18:32

look at the styling for the other patterns - with the green ones she’s wearing them with a slouchy sweat top that’s neither plain nor matching. I’d lean into the colour clash. Or the black/white ones are styled with a T-shirt and barn jacket or bomber or something equally casual. Also looks good.

TheLongRider · 04/03/2025 18:41

I'd wear them with a top in a block colour. They're definitely a casual style, so sweatshirts, hoodies, soft jumpers. They would look all wrong with something structured. A bomber jacket would look better than a structured denim jacket.

The fabric looks very summery, seersucker is very lightweight and they could be quite chilly at this time of year.

If you like bright colours, look up Nicole Akong on Instagram. She has some great colour combinations that are similar to your choices. She was on Sewing Bee a few years ago.

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 04/03/2025 18:51

They’re nice enough - but definitely lounge wear, for wearing at home; so I don’t see that they’d replace jeans in a wardrobe. It’s not that one can’t wear gingham or candy coloured stripes outside - but the combination of the print and the fabric, and the price, clearly indicates something one step away from pyjamas. Essentially the invisible lower half of a working from home outfit. Is that what you intend them for?

lemonsherbert86 · 04/03/2025 19:22

I've ordered the gingham ones in black. Plan to wear with a plain white tee, oversized leather biker jacket and trainers.
The striped ones I think would look better with a sweatshirt in a bright colour

BlossomBlossomBlossom · 04/03/2025 19:28

a bit smarter/more put together than something like joggers

is what the OP is aiming for. A bright sweatshirt with any of the printed trousers is children’s TV presenter territory - the very opposite of ‘smart’.

Fair enough. But if you knew that then why did you ask her if she intended to wear them as the invisible bottom half of a wfh outfit?

lemonsherbert86 · 04/03/2025 19:39

There's a lady on Instagram - claireakennedy whose style is very similar. You could get some inspo from her OP

Delphiniumandlupins · 04/03/2025 19:48

They look comfy but not particularly warm, more indoor than outdoor wear. Also, the second pair look quite low in the crotch. I think the gingham ones are smarter and you could wear a simple, crisp top with them.

Waisted · 04/03/2025 19:51

They definitely shout PJs to me too sorry OP.

If you love them I would go with a plain long sleeve cotton TShirt in white or a colour to match.

Pyjamatimenow · 04/03/2025 19:53

This is definitely lounge wear

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 04/03/2025 21:12

I have very similar from Uniqlo last summer - they were viral on TikTok so plenty people were wearing them out of the house!

Mine are navy and white so a bit more low-key, but I wore them loads. The fabric (on mine) was very light, so I wore them mainly with either plain or graphic tees, and either white Sambas or Birkenstock Boston clogs, oversized grey-black Levi’s denim jacket. I have a white ASOS t-shirt with a red lobster on it which I wore with them a few times and that looked great, also a couple of printed Ganni t-shirts which worked well.

I found things like sweatshirts didn’t work because the trousers are so light they weren’t warm enough in sweatshirt weather, and the heavy top just looked wrong even if my legs weren’t chilly.

Lovemycat2023 · 04/03/2025 22:32

I think I would only wear them in the summer and then with either a plain classic white Tshirt (or vest top) and white trainers or Birkenstocks.

namethisbird · 04/03/2025 23:23

I wouldn’t wear anything with them, I would put them in the bin.
They are hideous. Plain black, brown or cream would be more classic.

Gosh, you’re rude. Presumably if OP likes these trousers she doesn’t want to wear neutrals and look more classic.

soupyspoon · 04/03/2025 23:37

I dont like them and think they look like PJs, however if you want to make the best of them, then I personally would pick a tightish top, in one of the colours of the trousers (so pink or purple/black or white/green or cream) and just have that as a top so you balance out the very baggy trousers with a streamlined top

I personally think a baggy top and bottom is not flattering.

They're not my thing but "classic" is going into my style room 101 along with "simple" "flattering" and "neutral".

If I were to wear them, I'd wear the black gingham with red pointy flats and a boxy, cropped to waist length black wool or cotton jumper or a boxy, waist length white shirt.

Gettingbysomehow · 05/03/2025 06:41

I'm sorry but I'd never wear these and I love comfy trousers. The crotch area hangs to the knees. There are lots of comfy trousers out there that fit much better.
I love saint and sofia trousers they are smart, modern and comfortable. Wonderful soft material. I have a few pairs.

Pigeonqueen · 05/03/2025 07:50

I have lupus and can’t stand anything fitted around my waist but I’m not a fan of these, sorry. They really do look like pjs! Have you had at look at Yours? I find their wide legged trousers so comfy, the elastic around the waist isn’t too thick and wide, so they don’t dig in and they’re very flattering on. Many, many styles and colours to choose from. I usually wear them with trainers.

MsCupcake · 05/03/2025 14:44

Have a look at ChicHero, I came across them on TikTok and they do really colourful wide leg plisse trousers that are really well priced, my collection is growing...

Ihopeyouhavent · 05/03/2025 17:08

Oh no no no! They are clown pants!! Better to go for dark trousers and the colour in the top rather than the other way round!

Loverofoldfilms · 05/03/2025 18:35

They look like PJs or home wear. Have you thought about wearing black ponte trousers instead, like these (just an example).

wildthingsinthenight · 05/03/2025 20:26

Look at imlaurabradshaw on instagram OP.
She styles lots of lovely comfy but smart outfits.
I just got some "trousers that look like jeans but aren't" on her recommendation from Uniqlo. I love them.

I like the checky trousers and would wear plain t shirts with them
